Easter Bank holidays should be flexible or postponed

What’s the point of bank holidays in the current environment. They should be postponed until the summer. At best they don’t mean anything, Easter Sunday is the religious day if you want to celebrate. At worst, they will be depressing and encourage people to mingle! Let’s start a petition to move them!!

Start a petition? Seriously. Because the government don’t have enough to deal with?

this

I think you might be surprised how many people ARE STILL WORKING even during these difficult times. I am one and I am really looking forward to a couple of days off over Easter.

Ubercornsdiscoball · 25/03/2020 07:59

You know this won’t all just magically go away don’t you OP? It’s going to be a while. A long while. Workers need that time off

BertieDrapper · 25/03/2020 08:00

My DH is WFH.
He is doing 10 plus hour days with no breaks at the moment. And logged quite few hours over the weekend.

Which also means I have to entertain my 4 year old all single handily. In isolation!

We need a break. We need time as a family. So you are most definitely being unreasonable!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 25/03/2020 08:04

Is it because YOU aren't at work so won't get your extra days off?? How ridiculous are you? In light of what is going on I can't get my head around why this is even a concern to you besides complete and utter selfishness

cologne4711 · 25/03/2020 08:09

I was thinking this morning that the two May bank holidays should be moved to August. But the pp is right - it's actually better to get them all out of the way now because we'll need people to be productive later in the year.

The VE day could be moved to September for VJ day I suppose as it had a specific purpose.

LIZS · 25/03/2020 08:14

Your energy might be better spent on moving the May VE day bh. Any celebrations are likely to be cancelled if not already. However given how many working/education days are likely to be lost can we really afford extra bh later in the year?

cantdothisnow1 · 25/03/2020 08:19

Absolutely ridiculous suggestion on all sorts of levels.

But mainly the economic cost of paying employees for the extra days off when the economy has already taken such a hit.
Also this is a religious holiday. There is no point in moving it when you can't alter the church calendar.

TheRealHousewife · 25/03/2020 08:21

Don’t be a silly billy 😝

Following taken from Almanac:-

This year, Easter will be observed on Sunday, April 12. (Eastern Orthodox Easter will take place the following Sunday, April 19.) Easter’s date is just five days after April’s full Moon (Tuesday, April 7), which is the first full Moon to occur after the spring equinox and is therefore known in the Christian calendar as the “Paschal Full Moon.”
Future Easter Dates
Easter is a “movable feast” and does not have a fixed date; however, it is always held on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

3 of us have 2 weeks holiday booked. We were meant to be on a cruise. Think my adult dc may see if they can change theirs. Dh has to use his holiday. He's going to drive me mad....

Nmagain · 25/03/2020 08:24

There are lots of people still working and not just from home. I can’t wait until the bank holiday

Geekmama · 25/03/2020 08:42

Is a bloody stupid idea.
The country is already on the verge of economic ruined. so to add an additional day off in the summer would cost the country and employees even more in this turbulent time. I'm speaking as a teacher who is going lose her Easter holidays completely to look after vulnerable students and I'm not going to get that time back or get overtime for it and it's the last thing on my mind in this current climate. I'm lucky to have a job when hundreds of people in this country have just lost theirs. We need to be pulling together not trying to take more than we need. I think that's a lesson for life. only take what you need.

If everybody did that gosh we would all have toilet roll! Grin

Qwerty543 · 25/03/2020 08:45

Nope. I'm WFH so I'm looking forward to the time off.

thepointoforder · 25/03/2020 09:15

Nope, no and no. I need that time to relax. What with WFH and home education, the line between work, school and home is blurring massively.

Zaphodsotherhead · 25/03/2020 10:00

Supermarket worker here. We don't get Easter. Or Bank Holidays. We don't even get paid extra for working them. We do get flexible holidays though so we don't have to be off when all the schools are...oh. Wait a minute...

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/03/2020 10:07

Also, how can Easter be flexible?

Can Christmas be flexible as well?

AnyFucker · 25/03/2020 10:15

Have you had a rethink, op ?

countrygirl99 · 25/03/2020 10:55

Some of us are still working.

Likethebattle · 25/03/2020 11:07

I’m working from home, husband has to go in and good Friday is our anniversary. We can’t go out anywhere but we can get a take away and be together it’s important and I’m counting the days.

Brefugee · 25/03/2020 21:38

OP, you do know what Easter is, right?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 25/03/2020 21:53

OP, you do know what Easter is, right?

Of course she does. It's when they sell chocolate eggs in the shops.

I am still working every day, even more than before.
I need a long weekend and the ability to switch off completely because working from home constantly to me means, that I literally started dreaming about working.
First World problems, eh?

weedoogie · 26/03/2020 14:54

*Also, how can Easter be flexible?

Can Christmas be flexible as well?*

Christmas is on 25 December every year, no matter what day of the week that is. Every year the day of the week on which Christmas falls changes. Easter has to be on a Sunday and therefore the date has to change every year...

foodandwine89 · 26/03/2020 15:12

You realize most people are still working, right? I'm working from home, good 10-12 hour days. Most people I know are the same. And then there's loads of people still going into work. I think most people are looking forward to a few days of chilling

CatBatCat · 26/03/2020 15:14

This supposed lockdown is looking likely to end at the easter weekend. When the country is able to ressurect its a perfect way to honour and celebrate Jesus doing the same.
