To ask how much you feed your cat

Recently rehomed a three year old cat. He’s quite big (tall) and weighs around 4.5kg.

He seems to be constantly hungry! He currently wakes us up around 6am wanting breakfast (1/2 pouch), then has biscuits then another 1/2 pouch for dinner and then the same for supper. We’ve been giving him supper as at first he was waking us at 4am to be fed!

He’s active but not going outside yet.

How much do you feed your cat, and what?

@jomalone I think my cats would eat me if I only fed them that much😳

Deux · 24/03/2020 20:45

My 2 are one year old very active cats so just into adulthood .

They have a complete Grain free dry food which is down the whole time and then have between 3 - 4 pouches of wet food a day. They usually get some chicken or tuna once a week (which I warm in the microwave 🤦🏻‍♀️)

thegcatsmother · 24/03/2020 20:45

My 4.4 kg 17 yo boy gets two pouches a day, plus dry food down all day, and another pouch or alutray of Sheba if he wants it before I go to bed.

He had breakfast this morning, then wanted more food at about 1530, which he wolfed down, then had had some dinner, which he'll polish off later.

Anthilda · 24/03/2020 20:47

Oh god, I must be under feeding.
Active 3yr old cat gets 2 pouches a day sometimes 3.
Indoor cat age 4 gets similar
Bowl of dry food everyday for them both to share and any bits of chicken/ham/tuna here n there

RandomMess · 24/03/2020 20:49

We have 2 cats they are fed biscuits on demand otherwise there would never be any peace...

SudokuQueen · 24/03/2020 20:49

Mine is almost 6kg and he gets two pouches a day and ad lib biscuits. He's fine. But he will scream the house down if we are even a minute late with the meal. 😂

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/03/2020 20:50

I have two cats. They share a tin in the morning and one at night plus they have biscuits out for if they want them

RandomMess · 24/03/2020 20:51

Boy cat will only drink from the running tap, girl cat will have fresh water in a glass of tap not offered.

The water bill 🙈

dameofdilemma · 24/03/2020 21:07

Our massive cat is on a portion of dry cat food twice a day. The vet has advised us he’s a bit overweight, to keep him on dry food and resist the urge to give treats or a third feed. Not great for a cats health to be overweight and most become less active as they age.

He’s massive tbh because he likes to catch and eat squirrels (part Bengal, total predator). We can always tell when he’s had a particularly good one as he leaves his feed.

If we fed him more he wouldn’t fit through the (huge) cat flap.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 24/03/2020 21:15

My small framed boy is 4.5kg and my larger framed girl is 3.5kg. They get 300g butchers tinned food each per day. Split into 3 meals.

jomaIone · 24/03/2020 21:16

She's been 2kg since we got her from a rescue centre, and she is just a petite cat and doesn't look skinny. Very healthy, and vet happy with her. She has 2 egg cups full a day which is the weight recommended for an active outdoor cat.

Now I'm scared she isn't getting enough? She's a lovely cat and never pesters for food. Only very occasionally when there is a chicken carcass or a bowl of cereal milk going unattended! She gets some treats but not loads.

Is dry food complete food or do they need wet food?

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 24/03/2020 21:17

Btw my boy cat doesn’t eat until girlcat has had her fill so it’s not a case of her being lighter because she isn’t getting enough.

RandomMess · 24/03/2020 21:19

@jomaIone 2kgs is tiny she must be getting enough. If they drink water and on a complete dry food they will be fine.

Some biscuits are way more calorific than others.

ZoeandChandon · 24/03/2020 21:24

My cat is aged 5, around 4.5 kg. He has one pouch morning and evening and a scoop of biscuits a day. He’s a home boy, not very active.

Mothership4two · 24/03/2020 21:25

Wow some cats are getting a lot of food.

We have a large and active tom who is just under 2 and give him 2 pouches a day plus a handful of dried food with each meal. We used to feed him more but had to cut down on advice from the vet when he started to get a bit podgy. He is in beautiful condition now and definitely not a skinny boy. When he brings in some poor animal that he has killed, he doesnt eat it, but tries to play with it.

He acts like your cat constantly begging for food, even when he has just been fed. Every person who walks into the kitchen gets the same dramatic treatment. He is so good at the starving cat routine that he often conned us in the past into getting a 2nd meal. If we ignore him he will quite happily go and sit on his bed after about 2 minutes. He will also try and steal the dog's food. I worm him regularly. We put it down to the fact that he was a rescue kitten that was found as a stray. I have lots of experience as a cat owner and he is our first cat that acts like this.

Lidon · 24/03/2020 21:30

My cat free feeds. She will make a bowl of dry food last 2 days, and she gets the odd pouch of wet occasionally.

Brabble · 24/03/2020 21:34

My two one weighs about 14lb one about 10lb, they have constant access to dry food and I just top up whenever it needs topping up and about 2 pouches a day between them both they aren’t really big eaters

19lottie82 · 24/03/2020 21:38

Mine is about 5kg and gets a pounce in the morning, a scoop of biscuits during the day then another pouch at dinner time.

jomaIone · 24/03/2020 21:38

I've just checked the bag and weighed again as I was panicking!!

2-4kg active and lean cats should get 50-60g of food per day. 2 full egg cups equals 60g. So we are definitely not starving her and she gets chicken, chicken skin, treats and milk if she is asking.

I think you're all waaaaayyyy over feeding your cats. If I was feeding her 4x 85g pouches of Wainwright food, the advice on the pack says to reduce dry food by 20g per 85g of food so then she would get no dry food at all.

RandomMess · 24/03/2020 21:40

My cats are 5-5.5kgs they would be sticks on 60grm per day 😂

jomaIone · 24/03/2020 21:43

5-6kg cats would get 80g a day 🤷‍♀️

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 24/03/2020 21:44

I think you're all waaaaayyyy over feeding your cats

Except ours are normal weights for healthy adult cats and yours is way under healthy weight for an adult cat.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 24/03/2020 21:45

If I showed my cat an egg cup of food he’d throw the egg cup at me Grin

RandomMess · 24/03/2020 21:48

Depends on the food!!

Take dog food, some bags it's 50 per day other brands 120!

Our cats have lost weight and we're under vets orders to get them to gain weight.

CrowleysBentley · 24/03/2020 21:48

Mine has a pouch for breakfast, dry food for lunch, a pouch for dinner and dry food in the evening. He's a big lump though, not at all overweight, just big.
