To ask how much you feed your cat

Recently rehomed a three year old cat. He’s quite big (tall) and weighs around 4.5kg.

He seems to be constantly hungry! He currently wakes us up around 6am wanting breakfast (1/2 pouch), then has biscuits then another 1/2 pouch for dinner and then the same for supper. We’ve been giving him supper as at first he was waking us at 4am to be fed!

He’s active but not going outside yet.

How much do you feed your cat, and what?

He drinks a lot actually, and does at least one poo per day (tmi).

He has Felix pouches and James Wellbeloved biscuits (he came with them, we probably won’t be shelling out on them) which I thought would be good quality! Coming from the rescue centre he’s been checked over and he is healthy.

This is him btw - not the best picture but I don’t think he looks particularly underweight?

I don't give my cat pouches as regular food. I didn't think it was needed, am I wrong?

My cat is tiny, 2kg, and she gets 1 egg cup of Wainwright senior dry food morning and night.

Duchessofblandings · 24/03/2020 20:25

Our healthy, skinny, active 6 year old eats 4 pouches and a big bowl of biscuits every day. If I fed him that he’d starve.

Catname · 24/03/2020 20:26

We have three boys who are each fed 1.5 sachets and 45g of quality dry food a day. They weigh 5kg, 6.2kg and 7.6kg. The heaviest one is on a diet with these amounts, not losing very much, and protesting bitterly.

adaline · 24/03/2020 20:27

Plus anything he could scrounge. And he loved yoghurt.

Mine loves pancakes Blush

ellendegeneres · 24/03/2020 20:27

Mine have two-three pouches a day each with plenty of dry food. Females. One is pretty stocky but not overweight (it’s her breed) and the other is a beanpole. Very active cats.

I don’t limit them to what they eat, they will ask for more but being as active they seem to need it. One is out almost all day. Never had a vet complaint about weight with them

Catname · 24/03/2020 20:28

Also, they are all large frame cats, and my biggest boy has very long legs.

BovaryX · 24/03/2020 20:28

He is lovely looking! The other thing is if he's a rescue, he could have food anxiety which will make him want to eat more because he is not yet confident about being regularly fed. My two cats are both rescues and Lord Fur used to eat five cans of sheba a day when he first arrived!

hula008 · 24/03/2020 20:28

He drinks a lot actually

Cats should get most of their fluid through their food. If a cat is drinking a lot it's a sign they are dehydrated. Your cat is fluffy so it's not going to look obvious if he's a bit skinny but if he's ravenous feed him!

hula008 · 24/03/2020 20:29

Sorry he's not fluffy! I didn't get a good enough look at the picture.

Sammy867 · 24/03/2020 20:30

My cats a Bengal and is 5kg ( not overweight at all vet says just long and tall)
She gets 1 pouch morning, 1 dinner time and a bowl of dry overnight that is grazed on. Sometimes she’ll get fresh meat from our dinner instead of the pouch, with other cat friendly foods, as her dry food is a complete food. She’s had this much since being a kitten and has always been in the normal weight range for her size and breed

OhhhPeee · 24/03/2020 20:32

My cat is 3.8kg and she eats a morning pouch, an evening pouch and a bowl of biscuits per day. She is 7 and has been 3.8kg her entire adult life, she is the only cat I’ve ever known who only eats when she’s hungry. I wish I had her attitude to food!

chocolatespiders · 24/03/2020 20:33

I think I would be upping the half pouches to whole pouches.
Mine have sheba pouch Am and PM. And good quality biscuits to graze on.

emelsie · 24/03/2020 20:35

My two are around 4.2kg And have 2 pouches each per day and biscuits put out middle of the day.

CandleFlames · 24/03/2020 20:35

My cats have two pouches of wet food each (one for breakfast, one for dinner) and there are two bowls filled with either Whiskas or GoCat biscuits for them to eat throughout the day. Every few days they also get a can of tuna each, and they get treats most days too! I have one 6kg cat and one 4kg cat.

PinkandWhiteCheckeredBlanket · 24/03/2020 20:35

My cats 5.5kg, has 1 pouch or 1/4 of a tin in the morning, 20g dried biscuits about lunchtime or whenever she asks, then 1 pouch or 1/4 tin in the evening. She sometimes wants topping up on biscuits before I go to bed but not always.

StarShapedWindow · 24/03/2020 20:38

My cat is a small female. She has a whole pouch and a handful of cat biscuits for breakfast she then has a whole pouch plus a handful of cat biscuits for supper. She often has a handful of cat biscuits in the middle of these two meals is she’s hungry. She’s very slim so not over fed.

mrssunshinexxx · 24/03/2020 20:39

If you look on side of boxes it says 4 pouches a day

I feed mine 3 pouches a day and he has 2 bowls of biscuits to graze on that I fill probably every 4 days or so

mrssunshinexxx · 24/03/2020 20:41

@jomaIone that sounds as though why she could be tiny that's barely any food ??

dun1urkin · 24/03/2020 20:42

Wiggles28
Have you weighed out the biscuits and worked out how much to give him, per the feeding guide on the food bag? That’s the place to start. Ours get a measured portion for breakfast and dinner, and a pouch for supper.

Some cats will beg for food all day and get fat, some cats will just eat as much as they need and leave the rest (we’ve got one of each)

Roominmyhouse · 24/03/2020 20:43

Our two boys are around 5kg each. We’ve gone back to tins rather than pouches. They share 2/3 to 1 tin per day plus they have dry food available at all times.

eurochick · 24/03/2020 20:43

We have two adolescent kittens (so probably not quite full grown). They have 4-5 pouches a day between them, plus unlimited dry food always available. One is quite chunky on this. The other is really skinny. They are littler mates but very different builds.

HotSauceCommittee · 24/03/2020 20:44

My poor lad is overweight, he’s getting on for 5kg and the vet doesn’t believe he only has two pouches a day. He loves his food too Sad

dun1urkin · 24/03/2020 20:44

You can’t rely on what others are saying here about the amount of food they give their cats, even if they weigh the same as yours, as different types and brands of foods have different calorie densities

BovaryX · 24/03/2020 20:44

@jomaIone

My cat is tiny, 2kg, and she gets 1 egg cup of Wainwright senior dry food morning and night

2Kg?? That's awful. It is far too underweight for a healthy cat. You are feeding her an egg cup of food?
