To ask how much you feed your cat

Recently rehomed a three year old cat. He’s quite big (tall) and weighs around 4.5kg.

He seems to be constantly hungry! He currently wakes us up around 6am wanting breakfast (1/2 pouch), then has biscuits then another 1/2 pouch for dinner and then the same for supper. We’ve been giving him supper as at first he was waking us at 4am to be fed!

He’s active but not going outside yet.

How much do you feed your cat, and what?

1 pouch in morning and one bowl of (cat) cereal at night

She's a fat lazy bia who doesn't let me cuddle her

cultkid · 25/03/2020 14:42

My cat or should I say fat is 8 kg and her belly looks like she's pregnant

MashedPotatoBrainz · 25/03/2020 14:46

Mine get 1 pouch for breakfast and 1 for tea, plus an endless supply of dried food that they can have when they like. Mine are both monster cats. Not fat at all, just big mutant cats.

4.5kg ish outdoor cat, gets 2 pouches, 1 first thing and 1 in the evening and dry food as and when he finishes it

Donkeytail · 25/03/2020 14:52

I feed her enough so she doesn't scream at me. Luckily for her she is bald so has a fast metabolism so eats all around her and still looks as sleek as a supermodel.

No idea how much our two weigh but they are definitely not fat. Cat 1 gets two sachets in the morning, Cat 2 gets one (she is a little and often type and unless she's really hungry never finishes a sachet in one go). They then normally get a sachet at lunch and one just before they go out in the evening. If my dad is around they will usually mooch a handful of treats or roast chicken off him Grin

2 pouches and a scoop of dry here too. We used to do three but she put on weight easily (house cat) and after chatting with the vet we were slightly over feeding to be fair .

All cats are different but I think in OPs case you need to feed more

Mine are 5/6 year old rescue cats.Weve had them 31/2 years and they still act starved. We have tins so 1/3-1/2 a tin each over 2 meals occasionally extra before bed if they seem extra hungry.
I have dried for emergencies.

Mine is still a kitten (9 months) but he's on 2 pouches of wet food a day - split over 3 meals - plus a small bowl of dry food overnight. We upped his food at about 5 months old, prior to that he was on half a pouch 3x a day, so 1.5 pouches plus dry food. That was from the guidance on the side of the box. So it sounds like your 3year old is still on kitten portions! I'm sure he'd welcome having a bit more 😊

My boys (2 years old) get 1 pouch in the morning each and 1 in the evening each, and a handful of biscuits to nibble on throughout the day.

1 is 3.7kg and often only eats half of his pouches. I worry he is skinny but our vet says he is a healthy sized cat. The other cat 4.9kg, will eat anything I put down, plus begs for more all day. Vet says he is bordering on overweight.

wickedgames · 25/03/2020 15:15

Both outdoor cats, but the smaller one is far more active.

Mothership4two · 27/03/2020 02:04

@Lidon I used to free feed my three cats. I look back on those times with a silly smile on my face full of nostalgia! Now have a hefty tom that sumo wrestles you ( Kato style) if you so much as look at his empty food bowl

TheGoblinQueenoftheLabyrinth · 27/03/2020 14:17

A pouch for breakfast and a pouch for dinner and a bowl of dry food for in between. Most days the dry food is completely gone by dinner time. My cat is 1.5 years and perfect weight according to the vet, he's out being active for most of the day.

I know this thread is long dead but I just wanted to clarify something...

Found my cats vaccination record and she is 3kg not 2!!!! No wonder there was so much outrage. Sorry!

(She's actually 3.2kg!!)
