Takeaways during lockdown

Do you think takeaways are safe? I’m worried about the packaging but not sure if I am over thinking it!
One of my children have their Birthday tomorrow and would really like a takeaway. Just wanted some thoughts on what people think. If there is any doubt, we’ll stick to jacket potato’s and save the celebrations to a date when this is all over.

But how do you know if anyone coughed on the food before it was packaged up? Probably best to reheat it (hot enough to kill virus) before eating!

MagicalKingdom · 24/03/2020 14:28

@ffswhatnext

For gods sake please don’t go out until we’re told we’re allowed to. This isn’t about you, it’s about protecting others. Just because you have had it, doesn’t mean you can’t pass it on. You can still carry it on your hands if you touch something with viral particles on it, and pass to very vulnerable people on society.

Plus we don’t know enough on the virus. Just because you’ve had it once, doesn’t mean you can’t get it again.

The rules are simple - stay inside and don’t venture out unless completely necessary. No exemptions. It applies to everyone.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 24/03/2020 14:29

We’ve had 5 this week as food shop is coming today.

We:-

Contactless pay
Wash hands
Take the take away from the front door step as driver has already retreated
Take it in and unload out of bags and wrappers And open containers
Wash hands
Get out pizza/burger etc straight to plates
Dispose of wrappers
Spray work tops and wipe down
Wash hands
Eat

But of a faff, but best way we’ve worked out. 🤷🏻‍♀️

KatherineJaneway · 24/03/2020 14:49

You forgot the most important thing OP - what are you ordering? Grin

Cissyandflora · 24/03/2020 14:51

Does every single detail need to be spelled out to people? Searching for loopholes is such a strange way to deal with the crisis. You have to stay home. Stay as safe as you can and isolate as best you can. Yes takeaways are still open. I wouldn’t feed my family takeaways at a time like this- far too risky- but yes you are right. We were not told exactly about takeaways so you have no guidance it seems. Unless you can think for yourself and extrapolate from what you are learning.

Guide from my local council. Takeaways are permitted. Enjoy op!

onionface · 24/03/2020 15:10

Surely a takeaway is less risky than getting food from a crowded supermarket where countless people have been picking stuff up and putting it back on shelves. With a takeaway, the workers will be taking more precautions than the general public and it can left with zero contact on your doorstep.

Fuss · 24/03/2020 16:10

Dh and I have a takeaway weekly. Regardless of how shit life has been (and we've had some crap over the years), we've always budgeted for our Friday night takeaway.

Looked on Just Eat earlier and almost all our local ones are closed. Decided as what could be the last treat for some time to pre order an Indian for tonight.

Small, everyday things are suddenly a huge treat.

pooopypants · 24/03/2020 16:28

@ffswhatnext suicide rates actually, overall, drop during times such as these

I'd order a takeaway, taking sensible precautions as described above. I'm trying to convince DH into one tonight. Oh, and hopefully it'll be pizza, onion rings, chips and diet coke 😷🤤

DoubleAction · 24/03/2020 16:32

@bridgetreilly The document you are quoting specifically says takeaways "should" remain open so it seems those who wrote the rules think they are allowed. I wish people would stop making things up.

Baaaahhhhh · 24/03/2020 16:40

How are takeaways any different from getting a food delivery to your door. Someone has picked and packed it, put it in a bag and left it on your doorstep. Takeaways just do the additional step of cooking it for you. Pretty much every country is allowing takeaways, even the Chinese allowed takeaways.

ShanghaiDiva · 24/03/2020 16:49

It is important that we support businesses and people’s jobs and currently takeaways are allowed
As pp said this was okay in China too. Several of my local restaurants moved to takeaway only and now some are fully open.

Yugi · 24/03/2020 16:50

@Thereflex9 have you tried the Morrisons food boxes? www.morrisons.com/food-boxes/how-it-works

Willow2017 · 24/03/2020 16:55

Which of these do you think would cover a takeaway:
Did you miss the bit about food places being able to do takeaway/deliveries before you went off on one?

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 16:57

Omg i had no idea there is a fake tuna thing!
Also, the boxes look great otherwise. Simple, you know what you getting, basics. I like it

ffswhatnext · 24/03/2020 16:58

@MagicalKingdom
I am staying inside. I said hopefully I can go outside to help those who need help. I know some people nearby who will be fucked if they get CV, and it's perfectly fine for me to bung in some extras along with my usual shop and safely get them supplies to their doorstep.

I'm not sure how I have made it about me either because of a few lines over a couple of posts. Now you have made this about me.

And the rules don't say stay inside. Once my incubation period is over until told otherwise, I am allowed to go out for a walk as Iong as I socially distance myself. Just like anyone else. And no I am not using this to use as a reason to get out of the house. It's in my care plan under mh about the detrimental effect this has.

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 24/03/2020 17:01

Small, everyday things are suddenly a huge treat.

Takeaways should be a treat imo, but we stopped thinking about them that way.

My mum was telling me that it's really odd feeling when you start realising that lots of things you consider essentials aren't and vice versa.

ffswhatnext · 24/03/2020 17:01

@pooopypants
I am surprised that they drop during times like this, considering there are those around us with no-one to help.

ffswhatnext · 24/03/2020 17:13

The Morrison boxes look ok. If only they had any slots loool.

This is the thing. If supermarkets don't have the ingredients, and people are still struggling to find the basics from last week, never mind the things they are running out of quickly.

How else are they supposed to eat?

A poster has already mentioned her health reasons and why she is using take-aways. They should be getting help and support from someone already to help out. Yet, they like others are getting condemned for wanting to be able to eat?

We don't know how many people are in the ops home. Even if everything is in stock, restrictions might need multiple shops. Isn't it better if someone who has the financial means, get all those pizzas and sides from a takeaway place?

Yugi · 24/03/2020 17:14

The morrisons boxes dont come from the supermarkets. They are filled at a central warehouse and sent out by DPD. Stock can't be limitless but it won't be affected by the slots available for normal deliveries.

Birdy65 · 24/03/2020 17:23

I have been talking to dh about this. We are going to have a takeaway. You can wear gloves in shops but are people actually wiping down every single item once home? We will take the precautions someone mentioned above regarding the disposal of containers, but actually, there is not much different than picking the food off the shelf or having a food delivery.

OP posts:
panicstationsready · 24/03/2020 17:23

My son works as a delivery driver for a takeaway - he has gone in today for the first time (been on holiday) so they must be taking orders otherwise he would have been home...

cactus2020 · 24/03/2020 17:37

Go for it. It's permitted and keeps local business going

HarrietM87 · 24/03/2020 17:41

@Cissyandflora takeaways delivered to your home are expressly allowed by the government. The guidance published following the PM broadcast makes that clear.
