AIBU to despair about the amount of posters who already think the rules don’t apply to them?

How can anyone look At what is happening around the world and still think it’s okay to go to their holiday rental/get their nails done etc?
I don’t know whether some posters are deliberately obtuse or genuinely don’t understand (not sure how much clearer Boris could have made it tbh) but I’m actually more scared now than I have been previously due to some of the posts on here tonight

We’ve got no hope have we?

OP posts:
YeahWhatevver · 24/03/2020 10:50

So many people looking for wriggle room and loopholes to justify their decisions and behaviour.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/03/2020 10:51

The questions last night and this morning on here confirm there are quite a few people who still don’t understand what is going on.

I don’t understand why people don’t understand

STAY AT HOME.

I don’t know how people don’t understand simple instructions

I think the problem is BJ and the government are giving people too much credit for intelligence and trying to give people some autonomy over the choices they make.
We can still go out to exercise/walk the dog etc but like we have been seeing on here people will not adhere to anything. They have to be told individually to not do something

For a lot of people think everything they do is vitally important and needs to be done

A case of stupidity meets entitlement.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 10:54

Why are the elderly going food shopping idiots? Delivery slots are impossible to get. They have to eat.

YeahWhatevver · 24/03/2020 10:56

Loads of cars leaving our small street. Only 2 people in the street work in what's been described as a key worker role.

Christ knows what people really are thinking. I think we'll be getting an update in days to say full lockdown, zero movement out of your house, no exceptions. People just can't be trusted to behave themselves. The government can't possibly list out every single business type and activity and put them in a yes or no pile.

People know deep down what's OK or not. They're for the most part not stupid

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 10:56

Out of interest I checked to see when my next potential delivery slot would be (not in the UK but under similar guidelines). It's in the middle of May.

RedskyAtnight · 24/03/2020 10:59

I also dislike Boris, but I thought his announcement was very clear. I suspect it had been carefully scripted and he delivered it without the usual bumbling.

The basic rules are great as a rule of thumb; I suspect the government now needs to produce an FAQ of possible "grey" areas.

Examples I've seen

  • can I exercise in an area that's not immediately adjacent to my home?
  • can I go to the post office to post a parcel (and does what I'm posting make a difference)?
  • can my parents continue to provide childcare for my child (DH and I are both keyworkers and parents not in a vulnerable group)?

There are a lot on MN who think the answers to these are very black and white, but I think others would appreciate "proper" guidance rather than interpretation of what "essential" actual means.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 24/03/2020 10:59

I’m giving blood this afternoon. I will go do that, then I’ll go home and stay there. I clarified that the session is on, and is a permitted reason to leave the house.

bigyellowduck · 24/03/2020 11:01

I’ve just been to the supermarket and back. Loads of elderly in there, shuffling around. Idiots.

So you have the right to shop as you are a precious snowflake but they don't?

Many elderly have less access to food and less access to money. It may be pension day !

Bigsighall · 24/03/2020 11:02

He was very clear imo. The problem is, people are just trying to find ways of getting round it!
Stop trying to interpret it to suit you and just abide by the general message. It ain’t difficult!!!

Leflic · 24/03/2020 11:06

Cam77 The strategy has been addressed many time. There was no point putting in place a lockdown too early because

a) We did need people to catch it - but slowly and not all once. There’s no cure yet. Herd immunity is all there is.

b) Lockdown is very hard to impose. The country wouldn’t do it at all unless it saw a rising death toll. Let’s face it some people are still struggling with it though it’s been on the cards.

c) The problem re essential workers us actually down to individuals now. The time for being a “good” worker is over. You can self isolate or just tell your boss to poke it ( nicely). The government will pay out or let you claim UC. Not ideal but there’s no excuse for employers to make you work unnecessarily.Even essential things likes banks or supermarkets can reduce their hours if they haven’t enough staff.

DowntownAbby · 24/03/2020 11:14

Anyone who doesn't think that many MNers will completely disregard the orders, because they're entitled to, only has to read this thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3859243-to-think-she-really-cant-leave

The OP is not the one being stupid, but there are plenty more who clearly are.

ClientQueen · 24/03/2020 11:16

I live off a main road that's usually fairly quiet in the day, I can hear from the cars IYSWIM
It's heaving. I've never heard it so busy Confused

Eckhart · 24/03/2020 11:18

There are a lot on MN who think the answers to these are very black and white, but I think others would appreciate "proper" guidance rather than interpretation of what "essential" actual means

This is what it comes down to. One person's definition of 'essential' is not the same as another's.

People who are saying there are no grey areas are essentially saying that anybody who disagrees with what they see as essential, is trying to 'get out' of the restrictions. It's a lack of understanding of the differences in people. You can't make 4 bullet point rules that cause upheaval in everybody's lives, and expect to have covered all the questions people may have. Legislation and government would be considerably smoother if it were that simple.

Piglet89 · 24/03/2020 11:19

@Smellbellina THAT’S who he reminded me of!!!!

Frightening.

Cissyandflora · 24/03/2020 11:21

Yes it has happened loads since 8.30. People thinking it’s ok to take the kids out because their children enjoy it. Someone thinks it’s important that her child gets new vests and on and on. And these fools will be clogging up the nhs. I feel that those who refuse to take the precautions we need should also opt out of nhs care should they become ill. Then they can all go to the park together. As long as they stay away from others who are desperately trying to stay well and be responsible.

Peninsula · 24/03/2020 11:24

Saw a whole family with mum, dad and teenage kids in the supermarket. Dont care about this normally but i do in a pandemic as it's unnecessary and just makes it more crowded than it needs to be

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/03/2020 11:25

We did need people to catch it - but slowly and not all once. There’s no cure yet. Herd immunity is all there is

How would we know when we have “herd immunity” if we aren’t testing everyone

DowntownAbby · 24/03/2020 11:26

@Eckhart there is no interpreting to do.

The order is crystal clear.

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/874742/Full_guidance_on_staying_at_home_and_away_from_others__1_.pdf

  1. STAYING AT HOME

You should only leave the house for one of four reasons.

● Shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible.
● One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household.
● Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
● Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.

These four reasons are exceptions - even when doing these activities, you should be minimising time spent outside of the home and ensuring you are 2 metres apart from anyone outside of your household.

Every citizen is instructed to stay at home

user1471523870 · 24/03/2020 11:26

In Italy they limit access to the supermarkets: one person per family and no more than x people inside the supermarket at once.

Most of the people I know go to the supermarket even more often than before, I don't get it. Yes, you might not find eggs or wine, but you can certainly make a small sacrifice and go without for 1-2 weeks and eat/drink something else? Why the need all of a sudden to go so often?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2020 11:27

Good post, Eckhart. This site is (was) full of what-aboutery on myriad subjects, however inessential. Now, some self-appointed and self-righteous posters are dictating what others may ask as if they themselves have right of veto.

I thought Boris's speech was clear. What was even more clear was that he said social events are not permitted - funerals are the exception. That was key for me really, there is likely to be a spike in requirement there.

We do need to follow the rules, for everybody's sake. I imagine that the government is well aware that (hopefully) a minority will deviate, but that their impact will be minimal as their numbers are minor.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/03/2020 11:28

Why are all the builders out loitering in groups of many?

I’m at work, being essential and what not, but I wear a mask and keep my distance, but there are groups of builders together, while not doing much.

Wtf?

Haffiana · 24/03/2020 11:29

I’ve just been to the supermarket and back.

Loads of elderly in there, shuffling around. Idiots.

But you of course are different and special, are not an idiot and you weren't shuffling around? How fucking dare you go to the supermarket and potentially infect those in need who are at high risk ?

ginghamstarfish · 24/03/2020 11:29

Yes he was a bit wishy washy and should have used the word lockdown repeatedly. I've said this before and will say it again - anyone breaching the rules should have a big indelible stamp on their forehead saying that neither they nor their family will be eligible for NHS services should they (inevitably) contact CV. The twats.

bigyellowduck · 24/03/2020 11:32

Why are all the builders out loitering in groups of many?

Government (Michael Gove) has just confirmed that builders are ok to go to work

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2020 11:33

Exactly so, Haffiana, very much agree with you. The self-righteousness and sanctimony from some posters is really nauseating.

We should be taking care of our elderly and vulnerable - and if we're not doing that, at least not put obstacles in their way and bitch about them on a chatboard.
