How can anyone look At what is happening around the world and still think it’s okay to go to their holiday rental/get their nails done etc?
I don’t know whether some posters are deliberately obtuse or genuinely don’t understand (not sure how much clearer Boris could have made it tbh) but I’m actually more scared now than I have been previously due to some of the posts on here tonight

We’ve got no hope have we?

I live Zone 2 London (near edge of Zone 1). Tons of cars going past on road outside me. Not all key workers I am guessing. I think this is what economists call "Variable Interpretation." Very concerning.

Tanith · 24/03/2020 08:11

“ Now SHOULD only really has one basic meaning "obligation, duty, or correctness". So we are obliged to stay home, it is our duty to do so, it is corrrect to do so!“

I completely agree with your interpretation, Samphire.
The trouble is, Government-speak in all the official documents I’ve received has used “should” to mean “best practice” and “must” to mean legally obliged.
I agree with the pp that said BJ needs to use much more forceful language.

TravelDreamLife · 24/03/2020 08:12

It doesn't matter how clear you are. Our PM was exceptionally blunt. 'the upcoming school holidays are not for holidays, stay home, don't go to parties, friend's houses or the beach, don't go out unless you need to'. Repeated about five times.
The next day thousands of people packed Bondi Beach, pubs, clubs, etc. So now our state borders are closed, all venues closed (Sorry, in Australia), People are asking 'should we still go on holiday?' 'wanna play date the kids in the holidays?' or refusing to self isolate.
Thanks to them, we're heading for full lockdown & 15% unemployment.

Daffodil55 · 24/03/2020 08:20

Shaking my head at some people. To explain, over the last 24 hours I have spoken to no less than 3 people who said they had not watched the news "because it is rather sad and worrying" !!!! and they are not keeping up to date with the almost hour by hour bulletins and changes in every aspect of this horror.

These people have never seemed thick or stupid to me in the past but now I have no time for them. Ignorance is no longer bliss and if I hear one more "it's only a heavy type of flu isn't it?" comment I will throttle someone!

thatgingergirl · 24/03/2020 08:22

Stealth - thanks for your post about the 2 people situation - I hadn't looked at it in the shop/bank/chemist scenario. That makes perfect sense.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 24/03/2020 08:22

Shoulda/woulda/coulda. The pedantry over the use of should is ridiculous.

This isn’t a legal contract where you are looking for a get out clause. It’s a perfectly clear message.

Stay home. Stay alive. Keep others alive.

zsazsajuju · 24/03/2020 08:22

Yes yabu let people ask questions in a difficult and anxious time and stop being so nasty

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 24/03/2020 08:23

Nicola Sturgeon used the word Lockdown.

Scotland should be clearer in what to do

Insideimsprinting · 24/03/2020 08:23

I think Boris was very clear, he always has been. Problem is though is people aren't hearing him, this is not Boris this is people that's the problem. If people are going to need the riot act read and a kick up the arse and complete lock down then what does that say about society? It tells me they are selfish fuckwits that will just keep doing what they want unless they have a gun to their head. Yes some people arnt very bright and some have slightly more complicated lives where they fit the rules somehow making it work but the rest who can't just don't want to and if they don't hear what he's saying and adhere to it quickly hell throw the book at us all. He's just trying to deal with us all like sensible adults, clearly many arnt this at all.

Micaela64 · 24/03/2020 08:23

YNBU. Those claiming things are "unclear" are just people looking for loopholes. It's ridiculous.

Jaxhog · 24/03/2020 08:26

What worries me about this is that I'm a vulnerable person and can't get food delivered. Too many selfish people who are NOT at major risk have all the slots. If more stay at home, as they should, of course, this will only get worse.

Please, if you aren't vulnerable, don't hang onto your delivery slot. Spare a thought for those of us who really shouldn't be queuing up with you at the supermarket.

TroysMammy · 24/03/2020 08:29

If Boris had brushed his hair I'm sure people would have thought "shit, this is serious" but I doubt it considering the amount of thick twats in the UK.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 24/03/2020 08:31

BJ was not half as clear as he needed to be.

He was perfectly clear. I'm surely not the sharpest tool in anyone's box but I get it. I can:

  • work from home: I'm no way a key worker

  • go to the shop for essentials. I will go to a local supermarket - only when need to - for a quick whiz round. I will not be popping in for little luxuries

  • go for a run once a day on my own
  • go out for a medical appointment (unlikely to be required). I am due to give blood next week though so will be seeking advice on that
  • go out to offer care to a vulnerable person (not likely to be needed for me)

I won't be getting my hair cut or my nails done or having any visitors. Will I get lonely? Yes, probably but it won't be for ever.

Micaela64 · 24/03/2020 08:32

He puposely did not use the word "lockdown". Combined with "should" and his 'Four Weddings and a Funeral" style bumbling, no wonder Baz from Birmingham thinks it's ok to go up the park with his mate, grabbing some cans of beer from Tesco Express en route

He wasn't bumbling at all. You're just lying because you dislike Boris. It's pathetic.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 08:33

Look a lot of people are not very bright. Communication needs to be aimed at the level an 8 year old can understand. Any communications person will tell you that.
You can say as much as you want people should understand it, but I know from some people I know that some genuinely did not.
So you say - people you live with, rather than household.
Just one basic example.

Some keep insisting he is listening to experts, but not communication experts.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 24/03/2020 08:34

Aaah, I see that there's a thread about blood donation. So, I am able to keep my appointment on Sunday. Thanks to the poster who confirmed that Smile

coldlighthappier · 24/03/2020 08:37

I utterly detest BoJo and even I knows that he was VERY clear in his speech. In my opinion the only people saying he wasn’t are people who are looking to break the rules.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 08:37

And it is clear from threads on MN that people have not understood if it is only key workers who can't work from home who can go to work, or anyone who can't work from home.

nannybeach · 24/03/2020 08:39

Just seen a post where lady has DS and GF, at hers, wants her aunt to collect her and take her to London, was staggered by the posters who mostly, bar 2% said yes she should go and stay with the Aunt. Seriously, its a NON esential journey, some even suggested a taxi!! oh, and she is asymptomatic FFS. Key workers and essential jobs are one and the same, there is a list. My DD bloke is working on ambulances keeping them on the road, DH delivery vans.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 08:39

Why are people saying you detest Boris? It is totally irrelevant.

What is relevant is that he is not following very basic guidelines about clear communication.
He is not giving an after dinner speech. He is delivering crucial public information.

alloutoffucks · 24/03/2020 08:41

It does not matter who is an essential worker, what matters is that even from MN it is clear that there is widespread confusion about who can travel for work.

Micaela64 · 24/03/2020 08:48

What is relevant is that he is not following very basic guidelines about clear communication.
He is not giving an after dinner speech. He is delivering crucial public information.

Dear God, he couldn't have been more clear. Did you want him to say "shut the fuck up and stay at home?" You can’t deliver a message to everyone’s language. It was clear, DON'T blur lines because you're hard of understanding or trying to look for loopholes to flout the rules.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/03/2020 08:55

Builders are allowed to work, according to the BBC.

Whenwillthisbeover · 24/03/2020 08:59

This morning’s classic. Mum lives opposite a golf course, looks out of her window at 8 and younger retired couple pull up in car. Barriers to club down and a notice on the barrier. Couple read notice, look at each other, leave abandoned car across the club gateway, get clubs out of boot and push their trollers under the barrier and go...play...fecking....golf!

Because by their interpretation they are same family and exercising. FOR FUCKS SAKE, send in the army.
