How can anyone look At what is happening around the world and still think it’s okay to go to their holiday rental/get their nails done etc?
I don’t know whether some posters are deliberately obtuse or genuinely don’t understand (not sure how much clearer Boris could have made it tbh) but I’m actually more scared now than I have been previously due to some of the posts on here tonight

We’ve got no hope have we?

caperberries a personal insult. The best way to make an argument look flimsy.

A flat is no different to a house if you can go out whenever you ask. She doesn't often ask though, because she's regularly exercised, and enjoys her home comforts. She's well loved, well trained, expressive, and, according to the vet, in fine fettle.

Tell me, what am I doing wrong?

LuaDipa · 24/03/2020 17:15

Seriously it is not tedious your selfish to want to walk your dog. It is tedious and selfish to call names when someone is expressing an opinion. Yes we should follow the rules but also exercise a bit of common sense.

I saw an acquaintance going ballistic on FB yesterday at the congestion on the tubes. When someone gently tried to point out that some still had to get to work and had to use public transportation to do so, she had a complete meltdown saying that she would never have got on such a crowded tube, and they should have either found another way to get there, or rung work and told them they couldn’t come in as these are dangerous times and surely their bosses would understand. Well yes, it is that simple for a housewife from a rural village like yourself Karen, but I’m sure our key workers, those most likely to be forced into travelling to work on the tube yesterday, were more concerned about the knock on effect of their lateness/absence on their already overstretched colleagues.

I wish we could all have a bit of empathy and understanding that not everyone’s lives are like our own and most people are not being stupid or selfish, but simply trying to navigate their way through this in the safest possible manner.

Willow2017 · 24/03/2020 17:17

What a tedious and selfish person Eckhart must be...
Flats aren’t suitable for dogs. Our dog likes to sit by the window surveying things & go into the garden to pee/poo/investigate something/chase a squirrel/ sunbathe 20-30 times a day. Being cooped up in a flat would be unbearable

What a load of BS!
Get over yourself!

OneForMeToo · 24/03/2020 17:23

My neighbour is letting her kids in and out to roam the streets has done ever since schools closed and continued to today. Some people just don’t think the rules apply to them and no amount of telling would stop the likes of my neighbour.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2020 17:28

I see the thread bullies are still here?

Take no notice, Eckhart, there's no point trying to argue your point with somebody who is determined to shoot you down no matter what you say. Not everybody is like that. Brew

Eckhart · 24/03/2020 17:35

Thanks for the flurry of support. I don't mind the bullies, I find them quite entertaining with their unfounded pontifications. I'll ask the police when I see them, they probably know a bit more about it than the MN bullies. I can't imagine that England will be enforcing laws that are cruel to dogs. And most dogs have more than one human anyway, so dogs in the same position as mine will be quite unusual. I imagine most dogs will get more walks given that all family members will probably want to take them out at different times, now.

SudokuQueen · 24/03/2020 17:37

They aren't being deliberately obtuse. That would suggest some level of intelligence to begin with. Grin

elshajd · 24/03/2020 17:48

I can't believe some people...we are doing shopping for an elderly relative...or rather were. I just phoned for the list and explained that we are not going to their preferred supermarket (Booths) because we are only going to the quiet corner shop to get the fruit she has asked for. She has now said she only wants the bananas from Booths as they are "specific to Booths" and if we won't go there then she will.

woodhill · 24/03/2020 17:49

@Eckhart

You sound like a caring dog ownerSmile that's the main thing

BuzzingtheBee · 24/03/2020 17:53

Just read a post about someone thinking of walking their dog twice a day.. obviously rules don’t apply to them and you FILAngry

Eckhart · 24/03/2020 18:06

Thank you @woodhill, kind of you to say so. I'm also very stringent about social distancing.

mothertruck3r · 24/03/2020 18:14

Well, to be fair, the UK is supposed to be on lockdown, yet there are planes landing every day from New York, China, Italy etc with no checks on the passengers. It doesn't make any sense.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 18:22

If nobody who lives in a flat was allowed to have a dog because caper thinks doing so is "unbearable" then there would be a whole lot more dogs that would be put down in shelters for lack of people to adopt them.

I mean, there are limits and perhaps having a whole pack of Huskies in your studio flat would be unwise but the idea that, say, a Pomeranian needs a 4 bedroom house with a large garden or the poor thing will expire from lack of squirrel chasing time is a bit ott.

woodhill · 24/03/2020 18:31

That's crazy mother?

woodhill · 24/03/2020 18:32

Look at Ken with Eccles in CS :)

Smithesque · 24/03/2020 19:19

FWIW Leo Varadkar (Irish Prime Minister) said this afternoon that he would not use the word "lockdown" as that had been used by the UK PM and it was not obviously lockdown. Bit of a dig maybe but not unjust and true.

Lockdown does not mean meeting up with a friend for a walk (as is allowed...albeit no more than two together), going to work (the tube is not just full of essential workers, I have at least one friend having to go to her non essential work as she is on a contract and doesnt get paid if she doesn't work and her place of work will not close voluntarily. She is high risk for a bad dose of CV19 but has a mortgage to pay) so unless bojo gets off the fence and calls it as it is, he might as well stay home and self isolate for all the good he is doing as a leader.

Yet everyone is shouting about the fact that Boris hasn't used the word 'lockdown' Confused

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 24/03/2020 19:56

@Eckhart, unfortunately for people like you there is no answer. You have your set routines, you are not willing to alter what you think is the only way you can do something for government, for others health, to save a life. I tried to offer you practical advice but all you can come back is with snide remarks.

I pressure you live alone and can’t split the dog walking with anyone.

I’m not “having a bad day arguing”, you’re the one that is trying to pick a fight in a very bullying way to try and get people to say, oh you’re so right Eckhart, poor you, you haven’t been given exact directions on how you should wipe your arse in the morning how will you cope?

If we all email Boris maybe he can address your dogs toilet if needs in tomorrow nights press conference. Then that problem will be solved.

Anyway, on the other hand I have to thank you for presumably donating blood today (I can therefore understand why it was so urgently important you found out if you could)

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 24/03/2020 20:00

you’re the one that is trying to pick a fight in a very bullying way to try and get people to say, oh you’re so right Eckhart, poor you

That’s obviously not what was happening

Most people were just disgusted with caperberries post

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2020 20:04

It's not Eckhart that is being a bully here and it's you that's being snide, lifeisgenerallyfun. Maybe re-read your posts to see why you're getting so many posters arguing with you? Or don't.

MindatWork · 24/03/2020 20:12

@Smithesque sorry but just to say you are not able to ‘meet a friend’ for a walk - you can go for a walk but only alone or with members of your household. The whole point of this is to try and stop the spread between households.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 20:21

I'm not even disgusted by caper's post so much as baffled. You can't have dogs in a flat? Well, millions of people all over the world do, so...

What's meant to happen in countries that don't even have squirrels? Are all dogs there doomed to misery?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/03/2020 21:37

She has now said she only wants the bananas from Booths as they are "specific to Booths" and if we won't go there then she will

Buy them from wherever you find most convenient.

Tell her they're from Booth's.

SilverySurfer · 24/03/2020 22:26

To say I'm shocked is an understatement. With the exception of a few snowflakes, I had always assumed MNers to be reasonably intelligent and have common sense. That assumption has plummeted reading some of the threads on here.

Can I also add, as a 70+ year old who is self isolating, as are all my similarly aged and older friends and family, I am sick of the constant ageist comments on MN about how stupid the over 70s are because they are still going shopping etc. Despite having supermarket deliveries for years, there are now no slots so if you don't have anyone to shop for you, what's the alternative but go to the shop, we have to fucking eat!

The level of ignorance and stupidity on here is truly shocking.
