Stay at home, go to work

What is deemed absolutely necessary when deciding to go to work? Many self employed, builders for example, will want or crack on with their jobs so they get paid. Has Boris done enough?

@horsesaremylife god you’re annoying.

My husband.
Lay off.

Is basically all you said in 15 different ways, in 20 different posts. 🤮

AmelieTaylor · 23/03/2020 22:38

@horsesaremylife
It says on the GOVT website

Under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, all UK employers will be able to access support to continue paying part of their employees’ salary for those employees that would otherwise have been laid off during this crisis.

Eligibility
All UK businesses are eligible.

How to access the scheme
You will need to:

designate affected employees as ‘furloughed workers,’ and notify your employees of this change - changing the status of employees remains subject to existing employment law and, depending on the employment contract, may be subject to negotiation
submit information to HMRC about the employees that have been furloughed and their earnings through a new online portal (HMRC will set out further details on the information required)
HMRC will reimburse 80% of furloughed workers wage costs, up to a cap of £2,500 per month. HMRC are working urgently to set up a system for reimbursement. Existing systems are not set up to facilitate payments to employers.

If your business needs short term cash flow support, you may be eligible for a Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan.

I take from that, if a business feels they need fewer or no workers due to CV thst if they furlough the workers rather than get rid of them, that they just need to apply and they will get the 80%.

8dayweek I not trolling anyone. The bottom line is that many on high end building sites in London are taking £2k a week (just to add that my husband isnt but he pays them) but also have mortgages and routine expenses reflecting this. They cannot come down to £94 a week.
Of course many self employed aren't but as yet no provision at all has been made for them regardless of how much they earn so most will carry on working.

JudyCoolibar · 23/03/2020 22:42

I have to go to work once, if only to collect stuff so that I can then work from home. Given that they did not give us any notice as happened in other countries, I don't see how that can be forbidden.

In any event, I will drive there, can park right outside, and there will be at most one other person around, from whom I can easily keep several metres' distance. So it seems to me that all possible infection control objectives will be more than met.

halcyondays · 23/03/2020 22:46

They really need to bring in the Universal Basic Income.
How long will people have to wait to get Univrrsal Credit?
People won’t be able to claim anything if their workplace is staying open, e.g factories making non-essential items.
Some places are having to ask staff to stay home tomorrow but they don’t know where they stand with pay.

It’s extremely confusing and needs clarifying ASAP.

horsesaremylife · 23/03/2020 22:46

@AmileeTaylor* my DH knows exactly what is says on the government website he and others in his sector have been reading it repeatedly and taking advise from experts. But the general consensus is that what it doesn't say is your reason for furloughing staff. Generally staff are furloughed due to insufficient work, a lull in work volume etc but my DH hasn't got that problem, experts are advising that you probably cannot furlough staff because you want to to prevent them fro getting Covid19 especially if they are not in a high risk area and your taking all the necessary precautions. According to ACAS the risk of getting Covid19 is generally low at work, none of my DHs staff travel by public transport.

AmelieTaylor · 23/03/2020 22:46

@polkadotpixie

I think your husband is fine doing what he’s doing as long as he is careful. Obviously no Client contact - photos phones etc to communicate. Being very careful what he touches (gates anything inside the garden - he doesn’t touch or move anything not completely essential and if it is he uses gloves (being careful not to then contaminate another surface)or disinfects it

It won’t be easy, but it’s disbar!!

BaileysforBreakfast · 23/03/2020 22:46

Johnson is a disgrace. It's all very well demanding people don't go to work, but he said nothing at all to reassure people who cannot survive without wages, or who will only be able to claim a paltry amount of UC. I have a family member in this situation. They will get £58/week to live on. This is someone who has worked since the age of 17. What a joke.
Johnson should have said something about ensuring realistic levels of support for workers who are forced into unemployment, and should also have said something about food security, which may have stopped the panic buying. No wonder some people aren't listening to the 'stay home' message.

Before anyone piles in, I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home. I just really feel for those who can't.

Sickoffamilydrama · 23/03/2020 22:47

We need clarity about the grant.
My family business has keyworker status but we've already had customers delaying their orders.

The problem is if we close we may not be able to claim the grant as we have keyworker status no one is sure if it applies to them. It's pretty clear if you are a gym or coffee shop.

Most employers are doing the best they can with the limited information they have. If we close we don't have products to deliver therefore we don't have any cash and won't be able to pay people.

Rhea1981 · 23/03/2020 22:47

My partners a self employed electrician. He'll be going to work tomorrow as we need money to pay bills and buy food. He'll go to work and come straight home. Take lunch with him so he doesn't have to go to a shop. He'll wash his hands and avoid others as much as posdible. He has asthma too so it's very worrying but at the moment he doesn't have a choice.

8dayweek · 23/03/2020 22:47

@horsesaremylife Do you know what, I've had a long day and no matter how hard I try I can't understand how someone could make 8.5k a month, spend it all and then moan they need a bail out. Genuinely puzzled as to why the Employed are better off in these scenarios that keep being thrown at me. The 80% assistance is up to a max. of 2.5k anyway. Anyway, after all this shouting from the rooftops about such dramatic losses I hope all NRP's are spending their WFH / furloughed time informing CSA of their actual Income...seems many have made a mistake...

gypsywater · 23/03/2020 22:52

@chipsandgin anyone would continue working in that situation, you'd just have to!

All well and good saying you can get 80% of your wages paid but the employers have not yet been given any further information on this, how it's going to work or when they're going to start delivering it.

Etinox · 23/03/2020 22:58

The advice is really unclear.

Stay at home, go to work
Stay at home, go to work
ilovemyrednosedaymug · 23/03/2020 23:00

Martin Lewis has great advice on his website and according to him you can ask your employer to furlough you if you are off.

He also said that a statement is coming this week from the Government about more help for the self employed . The people falling through the cracks are the ones without business premises who won’t get the grant as they don’t pay rates or get Rates relief.

Personally, I’ve took the mortgage break, reclaimed tax I’ve already sent to HMRC for the July payment on account as I pay them monthly. That will help for a while.

The whole point of furlough is that you can be given a leave of absence but our job will be there to go back to and you will get 80%.

Can anyone explain to me why employed folk can get 80% of their wages paid but self employed people dont get anything? Am I missing something? There is no way self employed eg tradesmen will be able to just have no income coming in, so they'll all be working?

Likethebattle · 23/03/2020 23:05

@LalalalalaLlama this infuriated me too. Facebook is full of shite!

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2020 23:07

If your job is not absolutely necessary but cannot be done from home, you stay home and don't work

This is what he said, but not what the guidance says, which is why people are confused.

PM's message confusing and not consistent with the published guidelines - surely not. Unprecedented.

Snorkelface · 23/03/2020 23:11

It was the newsreaders who confused things - Boris never said 'Key Workers' when talking about travelling to work, the newsreaders said it afterwards.

fairynick · 23/03/2020 23:13

Everyone on this thread seems very confused. The advice was to only travel to work if it is necessary to do so. It meant if you are unable to work from home OR are a key worker.
So basically, everyone can still work but just work from home if you can.
He wasn’t talking about whether the work was deemed as necessary, he was talking about whether the travel is deemed as necessary.
