Stay at home, go to work

What is deemed absolutely necessary when deciding to go to work? Many self employed, builders for example, will want or crack on with their jobs so they get paid. Has Boris done enough?

There seems to be different information coming from different places.

The speech says 'travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.' I can't work from home despite trying to get my boss on board, my boss is expecting me in or to take unpaid leave. So it is necessary for me to travel to work.

Sadiq Khan say travelling to work only if you work in a critical industry like the NHS.

So which is it?

makingmiracles · 23/03/2020 21:15

Yes, agree he needed to word this more carefully, widely open for interpretation by employers I fear

Yes I think now you must only take keyworker's children. As you are self employed you don't even have to do that I suppose, it's your call. If you take anyone else's children I believe it sounds like you could be prosecuted. They shouldn't be asking you to anyway!

horsesaremylife · 23/03/2020 21:16

*"Plenty of banks are offering payment holidays. Councils are freezing council tax payments.

How can the message STILL not be getting through to some people?"*

If my husband lays all his staff off and they dont get the 80% then they want be able to feed themselves and their families mortgage holidays etc wont be enough.

Houseyhousey · 23/03/2020 21:16

@BoingBoingyBoing so I'm a childminder who's income has completely stopped (no key worker children ) and DH is a self-employed tradesman. We have already requested a mortgage payment holiday and stopped all non-essential expenses like gym, kids activities, sky etc but that still leaves nearly £800 in bills and that doesn't include food.
So far, the government has offered ZERO help for people in my situation and we can't afford to drop both incomes overnight so DH has continued to work where possible. I have been applying for key worker jobs and fingers crossed might have something starting next week, but pay is less than half what I have been earning and won't last us when we have to include our mortgage.

Maybe83 · 23/03/2020 21:17

It's really simple. He is giving employers and people the opportunity to make the required changes. If there isnt it will be a full scale lock down like Spain and Italy.

So it's pretty short sighted of business/employers and employees to take.

Lalalalalalalalaland · 23/03/2020 21:17

DP works at a household recycling centre and has just been text to tell him he still needs to go.tomorrow.

Is throwing away that sideboard you've had since 1972 an essential journey...

JorisBonson · 23/03/2020 21:17

I'm a police officer who still has to go to work.

They've reduced the train service, meaning I'm not commuting for 4 hours a day on a shortened train.

It's jam packed full of people coughing and spluttering all over the place. I'm shitting myself that I'm going to get it, not only for my own health but because my colleagues are dropping like flies.

Please, just stay at home.

JorisBonson · 23/03/2020 21:18

I also appreciate a lot of people's bosses are wankers.

Piggywaspushed · 23/03/2020 21:18

Be interested to see if the building site opposite me is in full swing tomorrow. I bet it will be.

horsesaremylife · 23/03/2020 21:19

To repeat my husband would happily lay them all off but only if its guaranteed that they'll get 80% of their wages paid by the government (he'll then make-up the rest). He spoke to lots today and its not clear of this will happen he has plenty of work for his staff.

Idontbelieveit12 · 23/03/2020 21:19

BJ needs to close all non-essential businesses not just non-essential shops. My husband will have to go to work because if he just decides not to he won’t get paid. If BJ closes it, he’ll get 80% of his wages. How is that hard for some people to understand?

horsesaremylife · 23/03/2020 21:20

"Be interested to see if the building site opposite me is in full swing tomorrow. I bet it will be."
This is because most are self employed and there's nothing in place for them.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/03/2020 21:20

Frozenfan2019 thanks, that's what I thought. I would rather not take any children really, but I would feel very guilty refusing to take a key workers child, when they have no other childcare options available atm.

Hellswithbigbells · 23/03/2020 21:20

It would be helpful to get some idea at least. A list of those jobs that are essential to keeping the key work going.

Refuse collection, Mechanics, manufacturing, pest control, park wardens, bicycle mechanics, engineers anything hands on really.

I hope one comes. I think they need to keep going to work as I believe without us and those listed above other problems will arise. This is a shitty time of day to announce this.

This is exactly what my DH is worried about with his staff. If he decides today them off they wit get the 80% of their wages.

IndecentFeminist · 23/03/2020 21:22

He doesn't say don't go to work. He said don't go to working you can do it from home.

LizzieMacQueen · 23/03/2020 21:23

@BoingBoingyBoing Can I ask, where did you find out about council tax? That'd be brilliant.

Justmuddlingalong · 23/03/2020 21:23

Employers are deciding what's essential. That's one of the issues. There was not enough clarity.

goodwinter · 23/03/2020 21:23

This IS a full-scale lockdown like Italy, no?

horsesaremylife · 23/03/2020 21:24

"Some people are so thick, self centred and arrogant. You are not that important. Your work is not essential. Only people like health care staff, the police are important. Don’t think too highly of yourself."
My DH knows his work isn't essential but the government has not said all non essential workers who cant work from home shouldn't go to work and we'll pay you 80% of you wages

I think it will be interesting to see how crowded the underground is tomorrow (if open). I think it'll be much the same as today- anyone allowed to work from home is already doing so.
