Can I get my car MOTd?

This sounds absolutely ridiculous considering the issues some people are facing, but I'm a key worker, who needs to do visits. My car is booked for an MOT on Wednesday. Will I still be able to get my car MOTd? Or do I have to declare it off-road and not work?

I had mine done today.
Wasn't an issue - except the bill!!
Shock

WickedlyPetite · 23/03/2020 20:47

Mine was booked in next week and I had a call from the the dealership today to say they're closed for the foreseeable future.

They've unofficially said they think there will be a 3 month grace period announcement by the government given the current circumstances.

Fatted · 23/03/2020 20:48

Don't know OP, but my car has started rattling today so needs to get into the garage! I'm also a keyworker and need the car to get to work.

Casino218 · 23/03/2020 20:49

Doubt it!

MonaLisaDoesntSmile · 23/03/2020 20:54

Hoping someone knows as ours is meant to happen tomorrow!

cloudbutter · 23/03/2020 20:57

I'm so worried. My MOT is already 2 months out of date. I completely forgot about it. Spoke to them on the phone and they said don't worry. It's easily done just get it done asap. Feel like any exemption wouldn't apply to me. My own stupid fault!

You can only leave your home to get essential food or medicine, to exercise or to go to work and then only if you cannot work from home. Businesses will be closed so I suspect the answer is no.

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky · 23/03/2020 21:00

Mine's booked in for Wednesday too... I suspect it's not going to happen.

Weregoingonanadventure · 23/03/2020 21:02

Garages have been classed as essential. Dealerships are closing but independent garages are staging open (well, they can close if they want but arent being made too) as key workers will still need car repairs.
It will be "no contact" handovers and all that, but you will still need an MOT. They have suspended them for HGVs so they can all grt deliveries done but they will not suspend it for cars.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 23/03/2020 21:04

They can't close all the MOT garages as essential workers still need to travel. They may close some though as most people won't need to go anywhere for a while...

mimbleandlittlemy · 23/03/2020 21:04

I will be in this position in May. They will have to make an announcement I think.

Clutterbugsmum · 23/03/2020 21:07

No idea.

My Dh car is due for a service and MOT on Thursday, and Insurance is due on mine, and both Road tax are due at the end of March. We hopeful we can have at least one car road legal.

Chesntoots · 23/03/2020 21:08

I booked mine today for middle of April. I would think there will be an announcement but vehicles will be vital for people to get to work. I will need mine and I'm classed as essential worker. Sorry no real help OP!

user1493413286 · 23/03/2020 21:10

My DH works for one of the main car dealers and they will Have a very few members of staff to fix and mot cars for key workers. If you’re not booked in with a main dealership I’d phone one tomorrow to book in with them

Hellsbells123098 · 23/03/2020 21:10

Insurers are allowing a 3 month grace period

DartmoorChef · 23/03/2020 21:10

Yes you can. My dp is a mechanic whose garage does mot's. Advise you ring to book as many garages may be working reduced hours.

AutumnGlitterBall · 23/03/2020 21:12

You’ll get an automatic three month extension.

@AutumnGlitterBall
That us for lorries, buses and trailers. It is not for cars!!! It even says it in the title for the bloody webpage you've linked

Stop spreading false information. I'm asking for your comment to be deleted.

ree348 · 23/03/2020 21:15

No. They won't be open for you get it.

Weregoingonanadventure · 23/03/2020 21:15

@Hellsbells123098
Yes, insurers are just so your insurance dowsnt become invalid. But you cannot drive the car!!
You can keep it on your drive and if someone crashes into it, you're insurance is still valid. But it is still illegal to drive without the valid MOT.

Weregoingonanadventure · 23/03/2020 21:17

@ree348

At the moment, yes they will be. They have been classes as essential and will be allowed to remain open. You cannot drive without a valid MOT so they will still be provided.

Cab everyone please stop posting wrong information.

Busydrinkingcoffee1 · 23/03/2020 21:19

Mine is due in tomorrow at 9am, we're just going to call the garage first thing to see

AutumnGlitterBall · 23/03/2020 21:19

I know, I realised it as I read it. The website says it’s still under review for cars which isn’t helpful at all.

mrswarthog · 23/03/2020 21:24

Mine is due next week, have just texted the garage who said bring it in asap as they don't know what is going to happen.
