Can I get my car MOTd?

This sounds absolutely ridiculous considering the issues some people are facing, but I'm a key worker, who needs to do visits. My car is booked for an MOT on Wednesday. Will I still be able to get my car MOTd? Or do I have to declare it off-road and not work?

I hope my local garage stays open,my exhaust us currently taped up as we wait for a part to fix it.Im NHS and can't get to work without it.

playthestation · 23/03/2020 22:44

a soon as I realised I had run out of MOT I booked it in and SORNed the car. I've got an MOT booked in this week as soon as possible.

I didn't realise I thought you had been driving it the whole time.

I admit my mistake wholeheartedly. I feel like I've had enough of a telling off from you this evening 😅

When I mentioned SORN is to do with tax I wasn't telling you off. I was simply telling you.

playthestation · 23/03/2020 22:45

@slashlover

Is OP in NI?

susiegrapevine · 23/03/2020 22:48

My Bil was contacted straight after the announcement to say they will stay open he works for the local Vauxhall dealership so not all dealerships are shutting.

Yogawoogie · 23/03/2020 22:52

Mines booked in for new tires on Friday. I’m a nurse so still need it.
If it does go ahead I’m a bit worried about what to do while they do it, I can’t wait inside as they’ve shut the waiting room. Do I just go for a run?

babypossum · 23/03/2020 23:06

Weregoingonanadventure where are you getting your information from that they're allowed to stay open as essential businesses? My DH has not been informed of this and that's his business! They also haven't yet issued a lit tonight of what essential businesses are!.

Papoy · 24/03/2020 00:43

@cloudbutter why are you angry.... i didnt say anything offensive.... i was giving you a lighthearted "get out of jail free card"....

Unless you drive a truck which goes miles and miles on dangerous roads, i guess you would be ok for few weeks in a normal car (unless you suspect here is something wrong with the car)

In the middle of this catastrophy noone will blame you (a key worker) because your car is not MOT'ed if thats what you worry about.... if I knew you as a friend and you told me you are travelling in a car without MOT, i would give you mine to use since it sits at the driveway all day everyday ..... or take your car to whichever garage open myself....

People are gratefull @cloudbutter . Sorry if I have offended you in anyway....

@babypossum

The retail which can remain open does include garages

babypossum · 24/03/2020 04:26

ErrolTheDragon Thank you, that's extremely helpful.

ButDoYouAvocado · 24/03/2020 06:19

My car was in the garage yesterday. He says it would be the last to be done as he needed to get the MOTs on the other vehicles done before they shut down the system. At 12 midday yesterday they had already shut down motorbike MOT testing.

So yes garages are open but there will be no MOTs

Ginnymweasley · 24/03/2020 06:26

My dh works for a main dealership, their garage is staying open but on reduced staff but my dh who works in sales is closing his department. Check with the garage you are booked into but I imagine they will still be open.

Weregoingonanadventure · 24/03/2020 07:41

@babypossum
Wad going to reply but see a loster above already did.

They wont contact every single garage; it's up to your husband to check the guidance for himself.

Weregoingonanadventure · 24/03/2020 07:43

@ButDoYouAvocado
That's your garage. I've just dropped my car off for its MOT. There us another independent garage just off the farm road up the hill from me. They are also still doing MOTs today.

Stop giving out wrong advice please. Garages will take their own decisions, but you will find ones still providing all services.

TulipsTwoLips · 24/03/2020 07:45

My mechanic husband has just left for work. They are remaining open while there is work. They have had special measures put it by their bosses to keep them and the public safe.

Krabapple · 24/03/2020 07:54

Slightly different but my insurance is due in April. I haven’t if looked at the renewal but it’s usually extortionate but I don’t know if I will be able to shop around. Not important in the run of things but I did wonder.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 08:03

I haven’t if looked at the renewal but it’s usually extortionate but I don’t know if I will be able to shop around.

I'd have thought that will still be possible online, albeit maybe not as smoothly as usual.

reenon · 24/03/2020 08:15

I run an MOT garage

We are staying open

The Government has confirmed that we are to stay open.

Obviously check before you book in / go to your appointment in case they are shut but we are staying open

gingysmummy · 24/03/2020 08:29

We're in Scotland my friend owns a Harvard he was saying that they'll be a 3 month relief on mots not sure if this has been brought into force yet though?

SockQueen · 24/03/2020 08:30

My car has just been collected for its service and MOT. I am a key worker (ish - on mat leave for 2 more weeks but then getting thrown in the deep end as an anaesthetist) but they didn't ask about that

Dashel · 24/03/2020 08:35

I work in the motor trade and a lot of garages are staying open. Some of the big chains look after emergency vehicles and Council vehicles. Look at the websites for the garages as some of them are offering contactless services/MOTs.

If key workers can’t use their cars it would cause issues.

Weregoingonanadventure · 24/03/2020 08:36

@gingysmummy
And where us he getting that information from? He government where asked about this exact issue a couple days ago and the answer was that they will not be giving extensions on MOTs and garages will be allowed to remain open.

NemophilistRebel · 24/03/2020 08:37

Our car runs out next month and if we can’t get it mot’d I’d be worried about getting to hospital to give birth

Weregoingonanadventure · 24/03/2020 08:40

Could we all please pay attention to and follow the guidance which is actually issued by the government instead of listening to "someone's brother in scotland".

The 3 month extension is for lorries, buses and trailers. Cars, at the moment, are not getting an extension. Garages are on the list of essential businesses and can remain open and provide all services (as no contact as possible).

This could all change as the government are always revisiting issues, but this is how it stands right now. Anytbing else is gossip, fake news or simply someone opinion of what should happen. Ignore it.

GCAcademic · 24/03/2020 08:46

Just to confirm that I am at a Halfords Autocentre right now having a puncture fixed. They are still doing MOTs.
