Ditch the indigo!

How many people include the "colour" indigo in a rainbow? Isn't it time to ditch this absurd double blueness?

Richard Of York Grew Big Vegetables is just as easy to remember.

Vote YANBU for a less complicated rainbow!

Dear Lord. Come up with something more thought provoking. Challenge us, ffs.

Mysterian · 23/03/2020 14:09

There's no need to call me Lord. I'm not a deity yet.

TheVanguardSix - I see we took our fun pill this morning.

Mysterian - you are right. What even is indigo? A slightly purpley navy blue? It's attentions seeking, that's what it is.

Fuck off indigo, you pointless bastard.

ForeverBubblegum · 23/03/2020 14:17

I agree with all except calling it double blue, to my mind its blue, dark purple, light purple. But still only 6 colours.

I vaguely remember been told something in school (church school) about the 7 colours representing something after God drowned everyone in the Noah ark story. I think the extra colour was fabricated because it made narrative sense, and everyone's just accepted the lie.

FluffytheGoldfish · 23/03/2020 14:18

You can't, you will break Physics!
What will happen to all the prisms?

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/03/2020 14:18

All the blue and purple balances the showier top colours. Fuck you red, orange and yellow.

Marmite27 · 23/03/2020 14:19

It’s the spectrum of light. It’s what you see when there’s a rainbow in the sky. It’s fact and you can’t change it. Nor was it made up in the bible!

Brefugee · 23/03/2020 14:19

Richard of York Gave Battle in Vain is perfect because it is true and it is the colours.

Mysterian · 23/03/2020 14:21

Easier to draw with 6 colours. Halve it and then divide each half into 3. Far easier than trying to get 7 even stripes.

RedElephants · 23/03/2020 14:24

Red & yellow & pink & green, orange & purple & blue is what we used to sing as a kids..
So that's 7..Grin

ForeverBubblegum · 23/03/2020 14:29

Marmite what you see in the sky is a spectrum of colour, not bands of colour. Which groups of shaded are grouped into a colour is an entirely human addition.

Eg. I could argue there is a band of amber between orange and yellow, then it could be Richard Of Ancient York Grew Big Veg

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2020 14:40

Even physics can't agree about indigo, some diagrams of the electromagnetic spectrum have indigo as a subset of blue.

I really don't care, but obviously posting on this thread is more important than what I should actually be doing right now.

chocatoo · 23/03/2020 14:41

Indigo is such a beautiful colour. I vote to keep it!

RandomWok · 23/03/2020 14:45

I love the colour too. Sorry but it must stay.

Mooooooon · 23/03/2020 14:48

What??? What??????
How can this even happen?

I don’t understand? Confused

OrwenOrdduOrgoch · 23/03/2020 15:02

Get rid. Only there because some muppet thought 7 was better than 6.

starfishmummy · 23/03/2020 15:02

I like indigo. Personally I think we shoukd get rid of yellow and maybe have a second green.

Did you know the eye can apparently distinguish more shades of green than other colours? So that seems a good reason to have more than one. That and its my favourite colour Grin

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 23/03/2020 15:17

But surely you can't have light without indigo?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 23/03/2020 15:20

Orange is pointless. Indigo is soothing.

roarfeckingroar · 23/03/2020 15:21

Indigo.

ArriettyJones · 23/03/2020 15:25

I like Indigo

I don’t think there is a reliable historical source about Richard’s veg growing habits, either. OTOH he did definitely “Give Battle In Vain”.

I’d rather rearrange the musical scales. “All Good Boys Deserve Football” is tres dodgy gender ideology.

steppemum · 23/03/2020 15:29

well, there are 3 colours there

light blue, dark blue and purple. (for want of a better description)
But what you call them depends entirley on where you come from

eg in Russia and Central Asia, light blue is a completely different and separate colour from dark blue and has its own name.
So if you said that is it 2 shades of blue, people would look at you blankly and say - no, it is 3 colours, light, dark and purple

steppemum · 23/03/2020 15:31

and I cannot for the life of me remember the 3 russian names, I can only remember dark blue and no idea how you write it in English

ArriettyJones · 23/03/2020 15:34

That is the most interesting thing I’ve read all week @steppemum . Genuinely. I’m off to investigate.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2020 15:38

Could the light blue be cyan steppemum?

I saw that mentioned when I was looking for the images to illustrate my point above.
