Ditch the indigo!

How many people include the "colour" indigo in a rainbow? Isn't it time to ditch this absurd double blueness?

Richard Of York Grew Big Vegetables is just as easy to remember.

Vote YANBU for a less complicated rainbow!

Only there because some muppet thought 7 was better than 6.

Umm...it’s not a made up thing.
It is, actually @MintyMabel. Newton originally counted five colours but later added in orange and indigo because there are seven musical notes, seven days of the week, and seven known objects in the Solar System. Some ancient Greeks believed that they were all connected.

What Newton called 'blue', we would call 'cyan', what he called 'indigo', we know as 'blue'. In reality, with a rainbow (as opposed to a spectrum produced from a prism) the number of colours shown varies depending on the size of the raindrops.

It is one of the colours in Joseph's coat in the musical version. We did the musical at primary school and I always remember the colours of the rainbow in tune starting with violet.

Misskittyfantastico85 · 25/03/2020 09:53

@lillyhatesjazz

Not in the Donny Osmond version

ADreamOfGood · 25/03/2020 10:27

@CandyLeBonBon that's Indian ink, not indigo ink. As mentioned ten trillion times in any school stories.

Lillyhatesjaz · 25/03/2020 13:13

I have got muddled up we did noah at school as well as Joseph and I'm thinking of the rainbow song at the end

sueelleker · 25/03/2020 13:20

Red & yellow & pink & green, orange & purple & blue is what we used to sing as a kids..
So that's 7..
"I can sing a rainbow"

sueelleker · 25/03/2020 13:22

It is one of the colours in Joseph's coat in the musical version. We did the musical at primary school and I always remember the colours of the rainbow in tune starting with violet. There are 29 colours in the song, and I think they only repeat one.

Zilla1 · 25/03/2020 13:22

Suel, odd the children's song should be incorrect (incorrect order and pink?)

Misskittyfantastico85 · 25/03/2020 13:28

@sueelleker

Joseph's coat was Red Yellow Green Brown Scarlet Black Ochre Peach Ruby Olive Violet Fawn Lilac Gold Chocolate Mauve cream crimson silver rose asure lemon russet grey purple white pink orange and blue

FenellaVelour · 25/03/2020 13:57

We were taught “Run Off You Girls, Boys In View”

Bluesheep8 · 25/03/2020 14:37

Oh no, I've only just realised...the 2 sets of colours are different in "Richard of York gave battle in vain" and "I can sing a rainbow" in the sing it's "red and yellow and pink and green purple and orange and blue" WHERE IS PINK IN RICHARD OF YORK??? Mind.blown Confused

Bluesheep8 · 25/03/2020 14:37

Ah, someone's already mentioned it!

Serin · 25/03/2020 14:51

Admit it OP, you only have one blue felt tip!
I like your thinking tho.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 25/03/2020 14:55

Right with you, OP. It's always pissed me off perhaps more than it ought to.

Isaac Newton, I think, ascribed 7 colours to the spectrum - because he thought 7 was a fancy number. Obviously, he was a fannybaws.

Zilla1 · 25/03/2020 16:17

Scrimpshaw, I read somewhere Newton was a secret believer in magic and decided/promulgated a rainbow should have seven colours as seven was a magically powerful number.

ricardoshillyshally · 25/03/2020 16:28

Speaking of blue and green, some might find this interesting.. Doesn't bode too well for blue! Grin

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 25/03/2020 16:28

Orange wasn't actually regarded as a separate colour until relatively recently; it used to be described as a light shade of red.

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 25/03/2020 16:35

ricardo I've seen that article before. Fascinating stuff. (Yes, I spotted the correct green square, not much difference but it seems a brighter, stronger colour somehow, like a different dye lot.)

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 25/03/2020 16:38

Lily, you must be thinking of 'Oh what a wonderful scene, the rainbow overhead, Violet, indigo, blue and green, yellow, orange and red.'

I've got the tune stuck in my head now. Thanks. Grin

IHadADreamWhichWasNotAllADream · 25/03/2020 16:39

The song that you sang at school beginning with violet wasn’t from Joseph, it was probably the rainbow song at the end of Old Man Noah And his Floating Zoo.

Oh what a wonderful scene
The rainbow overhead
Violet indigo blue and green
All the colours that lie between
Violet indigo blue and green
Yellow orange and red

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2020 16:42

Newton. Magic. Seven.

Pratchett. Better Magic. Eight. Octarine!Grin

ratspeaker · 25/03/2020 17:38

Indigo was a pigment of Newton's imagination

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 25/03/2020 19:14

Ta-boom tish , ratspeaker. Nice.

PieceOfMaria · 25/03/2020 19:20

No. Indigo is the best one.

Lillyhatesjaz · 25/03/2020 19:27

Yes it was the rainbow song from noah I remembered it wrong. We did Joseph and noah at primary school, I am in my 50s now and I can still some of the songs (really badly)
