For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

What a weird thing to get angry about @EerieSilence - of course coconut is 'natural' and bounty is human-made. I welcome the pedantic deviation though Grin

StealthMama · 23/03/2020 16:19

Well, I've never heard anything about the rainbow being used as a symbol of oppression.

But if it's true, this seems like the perfect way give it a new meaning, one that is the work of our innocent children, and override that bullshit.

Don't fear it, embrace it. Only you control how you feel about 'symbols'.

SoupDragon · 23/03/2020 16:20

I'm currently crocheting a Virus scarf in a rainbow yarn. Because it's cheerful.

Shoot me now.🙄

Lordfrontpaw · 23/03/2020 16:21

I got a row on here for mentioning that I choked on a bounty bar (I really did). Obviously a meaning I had missed Grin

LunchBoxPolice · 23/03/2020 16:21

I’m going to put up an extra rainbow now 🌈

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 23/03/2020 16:21

@LEELULUMPKIN, I can't believe I had forgotten all about Rainbow Connection.

I feel a bit tearful now. Such a lovely little song.

LouiseTrees · 23/03/2020 16:21

@RuffleCrow the rainbow is also a symbol for a baby born after a previous loss but you don’t see women who had a miscarriage on here complaining. The rainbow in the window thing is bright colours, it’s that beauty will come after the rain and dark. There’s symbolism in it but not at all in the way you are interpreting it. YABU.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/03/2020 16:22

I'm sure I've seen posters on FWR talk about DARVO, saying the 'others' are making up bullying to play the victim

Yes "seems like "a classic case of DARVO to me."
(Deny, Attack, Reverse, Victim, Offender for those lucky enough to be thinking WTF lol)
As in, deny they were talking bollocks when people question, go on the attack in retaliation, reverse flip it so it's you being the one unreasonable and make you try and question yourself, and if all that fails cry victim and they're being an offender.
Or summat.

SapphosRock · 23/03/2020 16:22

Actually I want to thank the OP for singlehandedly highlighting how petty and idiotic the anti trans narrative can be on Mumsnet.

Lovely to see the rainbows out in force. The happiness and wellbeing of our kids in this crisis really matters 🌈

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 16:22

Honestly - don't give this airhead any more of an audience.

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 16:23

And THIS MOTHER thinks you're talking through your hole. Go and have a lie down. You're supposed to be in lock-down. I suggest you do it. I also suggest you remove yourself from the internet.

nomdefuckit · 23/03/2020 16:27

As a follower of the Norse religion (the original Northern European faith) I think every single person on this thread should personally apologise for the multiple levels of gross cultural appropriation you are all subjecting me to.

I'm very, very upset.

Obviously you all have no idea that the rainbow bridge is the path to Valhalla.

Maybe you could all send me flowers?

Seeitsortit · 23/03/2020 16:27

Years ago I saw an interview with a lady working with abused children. They knew they we’re getting somewhere with their recovery if they drew a rainbow, it seems to be a theme.
After years of DA I wanted an arc of 7 hearts, each a colour of the rainbow tattoo but them the symbol got taken over so I had to give up on the only design I ever really wanted.
Whenever I have had really hard personal decision to make I have seen a rainbow and instantly felt calmer and at peace with my choice.
A rainbow appeared at a loved ones funeral and helped my grieving process.
Time to reclaim it back

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 23/03/2020 16:28

Ok I am wading through far too many pages now and losing the will to live. The fact that it has taken me this long to work this out as the Trans vs women debate tell you something. It also tells me that I was right to close down my facebook account, instagram and twitter. If Social media has whipped this up then its a shame. No you cannot and willnot stop the use of rainbows, particularl as a sign of hope, sadness and bereavement. Children need the magic of rainbows, thay are a fabulous phenomenon so NO. I realise I am really showing my ignorance here but can someone tell this out of date old grandma what GC stands for? So many initials I cant keep up. All joking apart, many of us have issues, pain and heartbreak and many of us have thoughout our lives had to toughen up, or at least contain our pain. Banning rainbows is not going to do this. Op you have to learn that different symbols mean differnet things to differnt people. As another poster said, this is not a swastica ( another nicked symbol actually! )

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 23/03/2020 16:28

Lang was banned. She also put child safeguarding ahead of feelings so yes, lots of us changed our name when it happened.

Not sure what point you're trying to prove?

And I've explained already what I understand GC to mean.

You'll also find it on Twitter, often criticised by men wielding barb wire wrapped baseball bats warning women like myself they'll F&ck us up.

Anyway, i respect everyone's right to decorate their windows how they wish. I just think gender is bollocks Grin

Keep safe everyone Thanks

elenacampana · 23/03/2020 16:30
- Steve Hughes on offence and political correctness. He sums up how I feel about your ‘issue’ better than I ever could OP.

I’m afraid that as much as you don’t like it, you’re just going to have to be offended and that’s all that is going on here. You’d be doing yourself a favour by accepting that rainbows are going to go up in windows up and down the country, including mine. I don’t have children but the kids over the road have put a rainbow in their window and I’m going to reply to them with one because they’re isolated and living in a terraced house with no garden.

Don’t begrudge people a rainbow in the middle of a pandemic. It really does make you look like the worst kind of person. From my end, I hope that offence over a rainbow is the worst thing that comes your way during this pandemic.

WorraLiberty · 23/03/2020 16:30

I can't stop humming the theme tune to Rainbow now.

Anyone else?

Please don't put a rainbow in your window!
lamppostdog · 23/03/2020 16:31

Isn't rainbow bridge used to explain the death of pets ? Should I be having a word with my vet ?

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 23/03/2020 16:31

Has someone invented this whole thread as a ridiculous wind up? I think so , we have all been well and truly had! Suckers

SapphosRock · 23/03/2020 16:32

GC = gender critical.

Basically suspicious and disbelieving that being transgender is a legitimate thing to be.

SeptemberWeddingIHope · 23/03/2020 16:33

I used to love rainbow when I was a kid
Zippy
Bungle
George
Geoffrey
Freddie Jane and Rod I think

Up above the streets and houses, rainbow climbing high,
Everyone can see it smiling over the sky.
Paint the whole world with a rainbow.

All along the streams and rivers, shining in the lakes,
See the colours of the rainbow as the morning breaks.
Paint the whole world with a rainbow.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/03/2020 16:36

NoMorePoliticsPlease
I'd like to think it is but I sadly don't think it is - there was a massive thread a few weeks ago with people likening the LGBT flag to Nazis, seeing rainbows makes people shudder apparently.
Even the ones that are painted on say zebra crossings.
So I don't think the OP is on a wind up - I don't think the thread has gone the way it usually does though, didn't get the usual reaction.

bungleZippy12 · 23/03/2020 16:38

A post where My username is relevant! Grin

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 23/03/2020 16:39

Ok right I have just done my homework and looked up all the issues and by God I wish I hadnt. I dont think a rainbow in a window suggests anything threatening at all and you really are going to have to accept this. In fact the more innoccuos rainbows you see the better you will be desensitised.

saraclara · 23/03/2020 16:40

OP still doesn't realise that she's effectively giving in to the rainbow meaning as she sees it.
Surely if that minority use of it offends you so much, you'd be really happy about it being reclaimed, and be encouraging this opportunity to do so. I really don't get it.

Lots of GC posters have come on here to disagree with you, OP. Have you not taken any of their posts on board?
