For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

@RuffleCrow what about the unicorn phase ? I remember before unicorns because a thing I saw a weird YouTube video saying they are actually a symbol of something negative.

However rainbows are different to a stripy flag arnt they?

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/03/2020 14:41

@h0llygolightly
OP could you please explain how the rainbow is being used to symbolise oppression? I don't want to cause offence but I haven't seen any negative connotations of a rainbow
I'm not the OP, but I'll have a bash at explaining for you - basically, a lot of people who frequent the feminism boards have a real issue with trans people (trans women in particular) and say that they are out to erase women.
There was a whole thread a few weeks ago about how people were offended by the rainbow flag as it's a sign "women are being oppressed and taken over"
THIS IS A DRAWING MADE BY CHILDREN, ABSOLUTELY BOG ALL TO DO WITH LGBT ISSUES
Seriously, MN is a toxic cesspit lately, it really isn't a healthy place to be - if it's making you shudder at kids rainbow drawings with absolutely no agenda behind them at all, it really is a time for a step back in my opinion.

BelleharePenguin09 · 23/03/2020 14:42

Unicorns are pink! Largely!

Run for the hills.

andannabegins · 23/03/2020 14:43

I have a tattoo on my wrist of a rainbow too, my girls loved the wizard of it and I love the thought of happy little blue birds flying over the rainbow

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 14:43

Do unicorns have a sex? I always assumed they were sexless lol.

SuperGaGa · 23/03/2020 14:43

It's time to make a picture of a rainbow symbolize a ACTUAL RAINBOW. YABU and really self indulgent.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/03/2020 14:43

now they're gonna be banned from singing its replacement, Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep, because of Gender Wars? So what's next

Stick to Ba, Baa, Sheepy Sheep instead lol (that way - - I think - no offence could be taken from that)

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 23/03/2020 14:45

Ondalay how are baby unicorns made then Grin

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/03/2020 14:46

Oh and I thought this thread before I opened it was because the OP was going to be saying don't put a rainbow in your window as it will encourage people to be out and about rainbow spotting when they should be staying indoors.
But it's another bloody trans thread lol

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 14:46

Unicorns just are ok. There's no Mammy Unicorn, Daddy Unicorn or baby unicorn - they just ARE ok? Shees.

ddl1 · 23/03/2020 14:47

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me

Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh, why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh, why can't I?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 23/03/2020 14:47

Unicorns just are ok. There's no Mammy Unicorn, Daddy Unicorn or baby unicorn - they just ARE ok? Shees.

Grin Grin Grin

Every day is a learning day on MN Grin

Groovee · 23/03/2020 14:48

I disagree with you. I think of rainbows as a sign of hope.

Then they are the youngest members of Girlguiding too.

In the actual sky they are made from the sun and rain.

That's my opinion and I would encourage anyone to draw what they like and not be slated for it.

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 14:49

The rainbow symbol was adopted by the LGBT community to exemplify diversity and all the colours that make up a rainbow are all equal and though different have a rightful place.

I loathe the transphobia on this website, so never click into the Feminism board. Please keep your nonsense to the 'Feminism' board.

ravenmum · 23/03/2020 14:49

OP, let's say that I get all caught up in this craze, but I go for the bear symbol instead ... would that potentially upset Native American Indians in my area, because they see my bear picture as cultural appropriation?

Greendin · 23/03/2020 14:50

Why don't you shut the door and stay in, like you're supposed to, then you won't see any rainbows.

Thurmanmurman · 23/03/2020 14:51

Oh fuck off

whiskeylullaby2 · 23/03/2020 14:51

How ridiculous. 🤦🏻‍♀️

pigsDOfly · 23/03/2020 14:51

My small grandchildren and thousands of other small, and not so small children, are all stuck at home, only going out for local walks.

They can't go to school, see any of their friends, go on outings to exciting places with their parents like they normally do or do anything much. And there are thousands of other small, and older children, in the same situation. Most of them have no idea why their lives have suddenly changed so horribly.

And you feel the need OP to post on here asking people to stop them colouring rainbows and putting them in their windows so they and other children can look for them when out and have a bit fun when they're out on walks.

They made you feel like shit? Well, of course, in that case all those children should take them all down immediately. I'm sure we'd all hate for you to be put out.

Frankly, a lot of us are feeling like shit at the moment.

Your level of me, me, me, is unbelievable.

widdioisright · 23/03/2020 14:52

Oh I will put a rainbow in my window if I so wish, there are loads in our village.

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 14:52

I recall trying to emulate a rainbow with a light shone through a prism in physics class in my youth. Basically light as we see it is actually made up of many colours combined (the colours of the rainbow).
You get some wonderful rainbows in Ireland where it's raining and the sun is shining at the same time.

YakkityYakYakYak · 23/03/2020 14:52

I’m sure Boris will be covering this in his daily press briefing in a few hours Hmm

IAmFleshIAmBone · 23/03/2020 14:53

Do people not realise that you can disagree without being nasty bullies?

OP I totally get the rainbow thing but I think the flag and kids' drawings are a different thing and probably don't have the meaning behind them that you are seeing.

Ondalay · 23/03/2020 14:55

Come to think of it - the prevalence of rainbows in Ireland is probably why we have so many leprechauns with pots of gold. The little bastards.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 23/03/2020 14:55

I love rainbows. They are a sign of colour, light and hope in times of darkness (or, at least, for me they are). We have a glass diamond on the shelf above our fireplace and when the sun shines on it in the late afternoon our dining room is filled with rainbows. It's magical and my dc and I love to see them.

Yabu.
