For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

fucking hell....

Doingtheboxerbeat · 23/03/2020 13:51

The ranting and raving from people on this thread over a mere suggestion is starting to sound like a Piers Morgan tweet. So you don't agree and have more important hills to die on, there no need to be so personal.

Santaclauswhosthat · 23/03/2020 13:51

Yabu OP.

Just remember this:
Up above the streets and houses
Bungle's flying high
Opens up his hairy arse
And shits in Zippy's eye

👌

HappyDinosaur · 23/03/2020 13:51

Pretty sure the Girl Guiding Rainbows group don't use the rainbow as a symbol of oppression! I love seeing the rainbows everywhere.

sleepingpup · 23/03/2020 13:53

sorry rainbows are well, just rainbows, they don't belong to anyone.

For all millennia.

Kids especially have always loved them. That doesn't change.

what ever your opinion OP, i think you should try to re frame your emotional response to them.

They won't be going away.

ShanghaiDiva · 23/03/2020 13:53

I thought people who did not practise social distancing were self absorbed, but this is a whole new level.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 23/03/2020 13:53

Children learn about rainbows, they learn about colours. It is a natural weather event that displays a beautiful mirage of colours in the sky (and I like to think there is a pot of gold at the end).

This is not children using a symbol they should not, it’s about organisations making a claim to one of the most natural things in the world.

Let children have their innocence

VideographybyLouBloom · 23/03/2020 13:53

I haven’t RTFT so someone as probably said this but YABTU. My children attend Catholic school and they have been asked to paint a rainbow because it is a symbol of hope for Christians across the world. We will be doing it and displaying it proudly.

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 13:53

They do let male staff identify in as women for sleepovers though @happydinosaur. What a comforting thought in these dark times

You are being a massive hypocrite. It's using a rainbow symbol for something other than LGBT, about fucking time.

SapphosRock · 23/03/2020 13:55

There was a thread on FWR recently (before Corona kicked off) about how the rainbow flag was comparable to the Nazi flag.

I thought it was fucking ridiculous then and even more so now. And I'm a lesbian.

Ridiculous thread to start at this time OP. People have so much more to worry about than snowflakes being triggered by rainbows.

And thank you @Doingtheboxerbeat. It's nice to know respectful disagreement isn't totally dead on MN.

Oh my god sweetheart you need to get a life don't you?

Doggybiccys · 23/03/2020 13:56

I kind of get your point OP but you are coming across very badly with the cryptic/unexplained comments and consipiracy theory stuff. Its true that womens and girls rights are being erorded by the T brigade and yes, the rainbow flag can be symbolic of that but suggesting a simple ploy to get kids dealing with our current crisis and isolating etc is part of some wider campaign to silence women is absurd. And I agree with others that if something this simple is triggering for you, you probably want to do something about that. Its a universal symbol for many things and not able to be avoided. As others have said, its not a swastika or BNP flag!

queenMab99 · 23/03/2020 13:57

I might say rainbows make me upset thinking of my dead dog, rainbow bridge and all that, but that would make me a ridiculous, over emotional drama llama, so I won't Grin

Scruffyoak · 23/03/2020 13:57

It is for children. A tiny connection with their friends.

Ohtherewearethen · 23/03/2020 13:57

Good grief. Welcome to 2020 where someone believes they have the right to tell people to not allow their children to draw rainbows and put them in their windows because this, horror of horrors, colourful weather, hurts their feelz.
The rainbow flag has the colour spectrum on it (not a picture of a rainbow, literally just colours) and red is on that flag. Do tomatoes offend you too? Does the green grass offend you as green is also on he flag? As is blue like the sky. You must find it difficult to leave the house if just seeing colours also used on a flag but in a different way and with different meanings to different people is so triggering for you.
Just out of interest, as you clearly believe that your feelings are the only ones that matter, what would be the thing you speak of that would 'cheer everybody up'? You're not trying to speak for others are you, or assume you know what might cheer everybody else up?

HappyDinosaur · 23/03/2020 13:58

Whatever your thoughts on that, it still isn't an oppressive symbol, which was after all my only point. I just think you desperately want to be offended.

Burgerandchipvan · 23/03/2020 13:58

Bet you're fun at parties aren't you OP?

Cardiff76 · 23/03/2020 13:59

I’m a Rainbow leader. Rainbows are the youngest section of Girlguiding UK, for girls aged 5-7! Our girls have loved sticking their rainbow pictures up in their windows. My rainbows are part of a girl only movement that encourages female empowerment!

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 13:59

@Sapphosrock. I can't remember a time you and I have ever agreed on anything. Let's social distance, MN style.

CatkinToadflax · 23/03/2020 13:59

OP, are you the same poster who occasionally comes clumping on here complaining bitterly and noisily about pirates and dinosaurs? Because being offended by children’s pictures of rainbows is every bit as baffling! 🌈 🏴‍☠️ 🦖 🤔
