For the past few years the rainbow has sadly becomea symbol of silencing, sexual stereotyping and oppression for a lot of women and those in the LGB community. If you're thinking of putting one up, please think about how that may make women feel - many of whom have already experienced death threats and lost their friends and jobs thanks to those who wield the rainbow flag as a weapon.

I just saw two on my walk just now and it made me feel like shit. Not the intended effect I'm sure. Please consider something else: the sun coming out from a cloud, or a simple landscape. Thanks.

synonymous with science-denial and experimenting on children with untested drugs.

The rainbow has not become synonymous with this for the vast majority of people. It would never occur to me to associate it with these things.

If you asked me to think of the first group I could associated with the rainbow symbol, I would say Rainbows eg the junior section of Brownies.

AliceInADifferentWorld · 23/03/2020 13:18

Reclaim the rainbow. Kids have drawn rainbows for years, long before LGBTQ+ used the colours for their flags. The rainbow is not owned by the trans activists.

DotForShort · 23/03/2020 13:18

O.K., now it’s all part of some grand conspiracy? That might be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve read today. Well, thanks for the laugh.

Cacaca · 23/03/2020 13:18

Seriously - it’s something nice to do for children. To them a rainbow is the pretty thing in the sky that has a pot of gold at the end and is fun to draw. Stop making this something else.

JudgeRindersMinder · 23/03/2020 13:19

Do people having a rainbow baby upset you too?
Ffs wish I had your problems

Keeva2017 · 23/03/2020 13:19

Yawn. Goady af op. Children are allowed to draw a beautiful natural phenomenon. Don’t look.

SoupDragon · 23/03/2020 13:19

And then suddenly someone somewhere starts a social media campaign to get kids painting a symbol that has sadly become synonymous with science-denial and experimenting on children with untested drugs. Coincidence, right?

Oh dear god... you lost any credibility at all with that.

WTFrigg · 23/03/2020 13:19

Jesus fucking Christ. The world is going to shit, people are dying and kids are no longer in school, scared and confused because they have no idea why life has just changed so massively.

Take offence if you like, but to children it is something they can do to brighten up their day and to feel a sense of unity.

If it makes you feel like shit, that’s on you. A rainbow is a bloody rainbow. There are more pressing things to worry about at the moment, and if it makes you feel that bad... stay in your house.

ShootEmUpSarsaparilla · 23/03/2020 13:19

I’m a woman. I think it’s a rainbow put in a window by children to make them feel connected with their peers when most of them are scared shitless and missing their friends.

This post did make me laugh though so Thankyou for that OP. I needed it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/03/2020 13:20

Think isolation is doing some peoples brains in.

Sparklingplasters · 23/03/2020 13:21

We only have one, my DC’s school sent them home with them to put up, we’ve been spotting them around. After this thread I’m off to do more 🌈 🌈 🌈

LiveatCityHall · 23/03/2020 13:21

Come and tell my 6 year old son that the beautiful rainbow, he painted on his last day of school for goodness knows how long, cannot be put on display in our window, in our own home, because he might offend someone.
Kids aren't allowed to see their friends, some children don't have brothers or sisters to play with and are lonely. Let them have the rainbow and don't fucking look at them if it offends you.
Jeez!

PardonWhat · 23/03/2020 13:21

Fucking hell

AlwaysCheddar · 23/03/2020 13:21

Get a grip. It’s a rainbow... nothing to do with whAt you said,

Billben · 23/03/2020 13:22

Innocent or not, this now has negative connotations for many.

Many? I don’t think so. A few, yes. But believe me the general population doesn’t give a crap about it. So yet again you want the masses to ponder to the feelings of the few.

Plenty of things that don't and would actually cheer everyone up.

Everyone? How exactly do you know that there is even one single thing that would cheer EVERY single person up? You can’t. Up until today I thought everybody liked a rainbow. Now that seems to be not the case 😀
Well, I always look for a rainbow after the rain because it gives me that lovely, warm feeling. You are not bloody taking that away from me 😡

Marieo · 23/03/2020 13:22

I thought you were going to say something reasonable like it will encourage people to go out walking in populated areas. Alas, no.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 23/03/2020 13:22

We have rainbows and teddy bears in windows here.

BelleharePenguin09 · 23/03/2020 13:23

Innocent or not, this now has negative connotations for many.

Bullshit.

allaboardthesinkingship · 23/03/2020 13:24

It's a nice thing that children are doing. No one owns the rainbow 🤦🏽‍♀️

OldQueen1969 · 23/03/2020 13:24

I'm partial to analysis of the odd conspiracy theory from a psychological perspective, like to observe things going on in the world and have my own suspicions about various zeitgeist issues and agendas, which I generally don't share - I'm more your "That would make a great (fantastical for the most part) plot for a film" type.

But I have to say........ this is one of the biggest reaches I have seen at a time when the morale of the country as a whole is on a knife edge and people are admirably trying to keep a little hope burning for EVERYONE. It's really not helpful to claim a dubious oppression through general, usually harmless, symbolism and is more likely to attract even more of a negative vibe than would otherwise have been considered.

OP please practise good self care and I hope your fears and anxieties become more manageable.

MitziK · 23/03/2020 13:25

It's not a trans rainbow flag. It's not even any sort of rainbow flag.

Get over yourself.

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 13:25

Yes they're scared and vulnerable like most people, i'm not sure what that has to do with anything. My dcs didn't even mention the rainbows we saw - think i was the only one who noticed and it didn't do me any good as I've said. My dcs are drawing all manner of things to cheer themselves up. Limiting it to rainbows, even without the connotations, would be a bit unimaginative.

I know what DS is doing after his nap... plans flamboyant gluing activity

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 23/03/2020 13:28

Ah kudos to the OP for creating a huge discussion about... rainbows!

Poor rainbows, we see them so little. I'd like to see more of them, and although I'm 58 I'd like to paint one and put it in my window - no one would see it though.

RuffleCrow · 23/03/2020 13:28

All i've asked people to do is consider not drawing something that's been hijacked to kick women and non gender-conforming kids into line for years. Fine to disagree but i do not deserve abuse. Nobody does.
