@11:02LaurieMarlow. The rapid development of anti virals also gives us reason to hope. In a few months there may be a form of treatment that reduces deaths and relieves pressure on the NHS. So please do everything you can to stop the spread in the short term and longer term we should be able to cope.

Also my greatest respect to any key workers like ChardonnaysPetDragon. You are in an impossible position but if others who can isolate take this seriously enough it should help reduce your risk.

crapette · 22/03/2020 11:10

Apologies, they may have said London was in lockdown, not the UK, but that doesn't alter the fact that they were wrong.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/03/2020 11:12

Sure, but very much the lesser of two evils right now. No-one is denying the drawbacks of it.

I disagree. A lot of people struggle to see the bigger picture and therefore the full implications of decisions that are taken, generally. Cv hasn't changed that.

And there are existing drugs being trialled that can potentially be used quickly on the masses. But they are trying to determine the best combination and the likely impact quietly. There is no point in releasing made up ideas before scientists have a proper plan. It is why Boris made the 12 week comment. In that time there will be more ventilators and a clearer idea of what can be done with existing drugs.

Hurricane10 · 22/03/2020 11:12

I also wish people would stop and think before re-posting unsubstantiated crap on FB etc.

I've just seen one of mass coffins in Italy, supposedly of C19 victims but the photo is actually from the 2013 migrant boat sinking. It took 2 minutes Googling to check this out.

Same with all the "Test if you have the virus by ….. blah, blah" type post. It helps no-one.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/03/2020 11:13

crazydiamond that's exactly what I think too. Let's hope we're right Smile

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 11:14

I honestly don't want to go out, and hope that they will arrange more remote work.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 11:15

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

I HAVE NOT BEEN SHOUTING. THIS IS SHOUTING!!! YOU MIGHT BE DOING SLK YOU CAN, BUT IT’s BLOODY CLEAR MANY ARE NOT

Some woman had organised friends to come for Sunday lunch 11 people to the house. The house where her elderly MIL with COOD lives. People need telling that this is not on!!

That’s shouting - now stop telling me how I may or may not type.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 11:15

I CAN thank you. No need to worry about me. Worry about the people spending the day at the fucking beach yesterday, going to the supermarkets and the pubs on Friday night then visiting their elderly parents/grandparents today. Worry about the vulnerable they’re spreading it to

I AM worried about them. But how is posting falsehoods helping that? Encouraging panic is not stopping those people is it?

Evilspiritgin · 22/03/2020 11:16

Can some of you fucking stop it, we know it’s a pandemic we know people are going to die,

What I don’t need is fucking need is people reminding me every other minute, even on this thread you can’t help yourselves can you , wanting to make people feel shittier than they do already

People want to have a place where it’s not shoved down the throat every second

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 11:16

Blimey!

Teateaandmoretea · 22/03/2020 11:17

I AM worried about them. But how is posting falsehoods helping that? Encouraging panic is not stopping those people is it?

Nope, neither is posting about it in the MN panic echo chamber.

You cannot control what others do, only yourself.

GenxfeellikeaBoomer · 22/03/2020 11:18

I don't think this thread is the right place then @evilspiritgin

For everybody arguing that there's scaremongering, equally there's evidence that people aren't taking this seriously enough. So nobody is the absolute arbiter of what the correct way to feel about this is.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 11:20

@crazydiamond222
@Teateaandmoretea

🌷👍🏻

But apparently we shouldn’t believe you because BORRIS THE BOZO hasn’t said so🙄

Easy solution to the fuck muppets on FB -come off it. It’s full of shit on a good day

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 11:21

@Teateaandmoretea

Agree.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2020 11:21

The Financial Times has a tracker to monitor our progress. The FT is about as data and facts as they come.

It doesn't make for pretty reading.

Our current rise in deaths day on day is above the 33% line. Only Spain looks as bad. And we are both worse than Italy.

There are reasons why that rate might come down, but there is also concern that the virus spread within hospitals and our failure to follow WHO advice with precautions on protective clothing means that that spread will be even faster. This is because our outbreak centres on London and the Italian outbreak centres on an area which is far less densely populated.

We don't know which way its going to go yet. We will probably know by the end of the week. And tbh its probably already too late to change that at this stage if we are on a worse course than Italy.

The only thing that matters is that we do stop it and that does in part rely on the public understanding the danger and that does involve the public having a certain amount of fear to enable social enforcement of rules and advice.

The scenes yesterday strongly suggest that it isn't being taken seriously.

johnwayneisbigleggy · 22/03/2020 11:22

Yes!!

Teateaandmoretea · 22/03/2020 11:23

So nobody is the absolute arbiter of what the correct way to feel about this is.

Agree- How you feel about it/ what you think is valid. But maybe see mumsnet as more like real life, think of the impact of your words on others as we do normally. The people are just as real as your neighbours - would you behave like this if you saw them and had a quick chat from a 2m distance?

For most people this is one of the hardest things we've faced in our lives (my mother dying being the hardest for me). We need hope and optimism to stay sane, even if in the end doom wins out.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 11:25

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter

I AM worried about them. But how is posting falsehoods helping that? Encouraging panic is not stopping those people is it?

Posting falsehoods isn’t helping, but neither is denying the truth of things like how few ventilators we have and that Drs in Italy ARE having to choose who to ventilate & who not to (accepting they will die). Believing Boris saying the NHS is prepared for this when NGS Dictors & nurses are posting saying they don’t have PPE, they’re not allowed to self isolate if they have symptoms, that they’re not being tested & many are already in their knees, is not being gullible it’s believing the people over the politicians and frankly that’s sensible, not stupid.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 11:26

Noone is denying the truth. Noone.

We are objecting to the dissemination of misinformation and false facts for the purpose of spreading panic and hysteria.

That is doesnt contradict the reality of the situation in any way, shape or form.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 11:28

@Evilspiritgin

There are many other sections if MN where it’s not being discussed -honestly, what other interests do you have, gardening? Knitting/crochet - woolly hugs is amazing. So us the cooking/baking section. I even had a laugh in style & beauty the other day and that’s not a section I normally frequent!

Or try enjoying things other than MN. I’m sorry you feel you can’t escape it right now 🌷

I can’t drink much gin either - it’s definitely ‘mother’s ruin’ for me.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/03/2020 11:30

No one is denying the truth the next few weeks are going to be horrendous. But there is absolutely no point at all in getting in a state about things I can do nothing about. I can't magic up ventilators or PPE, if I could I damn well would believe me. All I can do to help is follow the advice as best I can and stay calm, causing as few issues as possible so the people who are better qualified and/or have more power can. I've had moments where I haven't been calm as I'm sure we all have but it achieves nothing apart from upsetting ourselves and our families.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 11:32

But there is absolutely no point at all in getting in a state about things I can do nothing about. I can't magic up ventilators or PPE, if I could I damn well would believe me. All I can do to help

Right? Its not like I have a stash of ventilators that I'm secretly hoarding and until now I've been convinced not to share them. There is NOTHING I can do about the ventilator situation- all any of us can do now is follow advice.

There are only two things in life any of us have control over and that is what we think and what we do. I dont have control over anything else.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 11:34

@GenxfeellikeaBoomer
@RedToothBrush

Exactly

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter

no one is denying the truth. Noone

Plenty of people are.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 11:35

Plenty of people are

and plenty of people are stirring up panic.

Neither is good.

Davros · 22/03/2020 11:36

I don't care if it's scaremongering, factual, funny, scary, repetitive I just don't want it all over MN especially AIBU.
Maybe we can have a new section called "non-CV AIBU"?
I suggest people make a Favourites list, rather than hiding one topic, and go straight to that list when you open MN. I do this, I never look at Trending, or whatever it's called, but I do have AIBU in my favourites and it's been polluted. I may remove it from my Favourites list for a while
