Thats it really, you come on Mumsnet and anxiety levels are ramped up. Surely thats not safe?

you can’t stop other people discussing the truth of the matter

Panicky FB rumours are not ‘the truth’. Far too many people are grabbing hold of whatever sounds terrifying because they think the scarier it sounds the truer it must be.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 10:52

STICK YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND all you like, but you can’t stop other people discussing the truth of the matter

I'm happy to discuss the truth, but I need evidence that what's posted is the truth.

You can shout all you want, it won't make what you are saying any more valid.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 10:53

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

There are PLENTY of NHS staff in the UK posting these warnings and that’s without reading/watching what the DOCTORS in Italy are saying.

Why are you refusing to believe them?
Why do you feel immune?

DameXanaduBramble · 22/03/2020 10:54

Haven’t rtwft but I strongly believe the fucking prep bid have a lot to do with panic buying. They should have just kept their gobs shut.

Casino218 · 22/03/2020 10:54

If you have the virus you need threads to support you through it. If you don't hide the thread

DameXanaduBramble · 22/03/2020 10:54

Bods.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 10:55

STICK YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND all you like, but you can’t stop other people discussing the truth of the matter

LOL nice try.

Ok- so, some people have said there's going to be a world war due to this, how do you suggest we prepare for that? - should we stockpile even more food and empty shelves even more? how about we start to get weapons to prepare? after all, we dont want to stick our heads in the sand do we??

FFS- get a grip- not everything that is posted here is "truth" and if you cannot discern the difference I am seriously worried for you

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 10:56

I don't feel immune, and I have elderly parents I'm worried about. I can believe numbers, I'm happy do stay home, but I don't need people to make me more scared.

Please don't shout, use your words.

GoldenOmber · 22/03/2020 10:57

Why are you refusing to believe them?

Not everything everyone says on the internet is true.

This is a very scary pandemic. That doesn't mean that every bad scary thing you hear about it is true. People are still posting rumour-mongering bullshit.

ie -

"I heard this from a doctor in Taiwan, if you drink hot drinks it'll kill the virus" - not true
"medics in Italy aren't treating anyone over 60" - not true
"here is a photo of coffins lined up at a church in Italy LAST WEEK" when actually it's a photo from 2013

Not every scary thing you hear is true. Not every person saying "I heard this from a doctor" actually did hear it from a doctor. Not every dire prediction is the brutal reality.

Taking it seriously is not the same as panicking. People calmly following the recommendations and doing all they can are not being inadequate just because they're not running around with their hair on fire shouting "we're all going to die".

Exactly. Aside from following the government guidelines which hopefully all of us are doing anyway what do the panickers suggest we do? run around screaming? start posting the end is nigh? what exact result are they hoping for because as far as I can see running around in a panic and screaming that we are all going to die is not really achieving anything productive is it?

'10:49ChardonnaysPetDragon
'The poor dr's have the horrendous responsibility of applying criteria for who gets an ICU bed based on how likely the patient is to survive. You are less likely to survive than others. There are people in their 20s, 30s and 40s with no underlining health conditions fighting for their lives in ICU wards in London'

Sorry but this is the reality. Google 'the three wise men protocol'. The latest data on ICU cases in the UK shows that 37% are under 60 and only 18 out of 137 had severe co morbities.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 11:00

Tell me, how many 20 yo with not underlying conditions are there on ventilators in the hospitals? Now many in their thirties?

How many of the deceased had previous conditions and what? Where?

I want the facts.

And what more do you want me to do? I am doing what I ought to be doing. I'm going for a walk but I will stay within a few meters distance from other people.

But I need to go to work, I am a key worker, I'm afraid.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 11:02

@GoldenOmber

They are not Facebook rumours. They are from DOCTORS (who you can look up online) etc

You can look up the figures reported by WHO. There are official statements by PHE & GOVT to show how many are likely to get Ill (and it’s understated) and how many ventilators we have (clue nowhere near enough)

The GOVT have already said ‘ tough decisions will have to be made’ (when asked about the number of ventilators) AND
Bozo has said

MANY WILL LOSE LIVED ONES BEFORE THEIR TIME

anyway, I’m moving away from this thread as it’s not doing my blood pressure any good and if I’m going to raise it on MN I’d rather do it in a thread where people might actually benefit from some help.

Just please everyone try to think of the elderly and vulnerable and do your bit to keep them safe. Then maybe we can reduce the peak & keep more people alive.

LaurieMarlow · 22/03/2020 11:02

Agree but it will make people less healthy/ ill and cause deaths itself.

Sure, but very much the lesser of two evils right now. No-one is denying the drawbacks of it.

Slowing the spread is the whole point. Presumably respirator production is being ramped up to the nines.

Hopefully in time science will provide better weapons. But no guarantees and I can’t see anything of note being available to the masses in the next few months. Vaccines are a year away, best case scenario.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 11:02

Sorry but this is the reality. Google 'the three wise men protocol'. The latest data on ICU cases in the UK shows that 37% are under 60 and only 18 out of 137 had severe co morbities.

Well, that's more like it. Numbers I can work with.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 11:04

Just please everyone try to think of the elderly and vulnerable and do your bit to keep them safe. Then maybe we can reduce the peak & keep more people alive

Its panic that is putting these groups at risk actually- look at supermarket shelves

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 11:05

But again, it won't change what I'm doing now. I've been staying home, keeping away from people, working from home as much as I can, cancelled all unnecessary appointments, but I still need to go to work.

GoldenOmber · 22/03/2020 11:06

AmelieTaylor there are plenty of false FB rumours around.

Once again: just because this is a scary situation does not mean that everything scary you hear is true. Just because doctors are (justifiably!) worried does not mean that everything on FB 'from my friend's nan's window cleaner's mate who works in A&E' is actually true. People saying "do not believe everything you hear" are not saying "everything is fine". There is a difference.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/03/2020 11:06

Just please everyone try to think of the elderly and vulnerable and do your bit to keep them safe. Then maybe we can reduce the peak & keep more people alive

What are your practical suggestions there? And no shouting, please.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 11:07

Did you see that NHS nurse in tears on SM because she couldn't buy food?

THAT is what panic is doing. Its harming the people we need to help us.

HouseElfy · 22/03/2020 11:08

only 18 out of 137 had severe co morbities

Severe, yes. But the others also had co comorbidities such as obesity.

TSSDNCOP · 22/03/2020 11:08

“.. if you’re not prepared for the truth.”

I’ve add that to the “tell” list.

crapette · 22/03/2020 11:08

Who decides which posts are fiction and which are fact, though?

Well that's exactly the point.

It appears that a lot of posters will believe anything because they have seen it written down. It is not difficult to do a bit of basic fact checking.

@amelietaylor of course there are plenty of knowledgeable health professionals posting facts, but there are posters on some threads stating "Ihave just been sent this by a doctor friend". No, no, no you haven't. You have mindlessly copied and pasted something from social media which begins with the words "I have just......

A very simple google search will often intantly show a lot of these "facts" up as nonsense, but instead of checking, people just copy and paste, copy and paste, copy and paste and that is what is contributing to the scaremongering.

I responded to one post the other day where someone had started a thread to see what they needed to do now that the UK was in LOCKDOWN (their capitals, not mine). FFS, the UK isn't in bloody lockdown - not even close. Why, just why would you post that?

It is great when posters respond with links to verifiable sources, but there is far too much "I heard" "Someone told me" which, combined with the woeful lack of basic common sense is actually quite alarming.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 11:09

Last post

I am not running around panicking

I am not believing all the ‘a doctor in Taiwan says drinking hot water will kill it’ stories

Or doing any of the other things I’m being accused of here.

FFS- get a grip- not everything that is posted here is "truth" and if you cannot discern the difference I am seriously worried for you

I CAN thank you. No need to worry about me. Worry about the people spending the day at the fucking beach yesterday, going to the supermarkets and the pubs on Friday night then visiting their elderly parents/grandparents today. Worry about the vulnerable they’re spreading it to
