To report this ASDA worker?

maa1992 · 19/03/2020 16:12

Asda are supposed to be rationing (x3 of one thing per shop) guy behind us buying 6 crates of beer - she says, that's ok I'll just put it through as two separate shops.

Then, she checks how many baby formulas I have (x1) She then says "I've bought loads, I give it to my elderly mother in porridge and coffee because she's vulnerable"

I said, well I have two vulnerable parents and in-laws but I'm not giving them baby formula, it's for babies?? She then said "well I won't begrudge someone buying 6 tins per shop if want it. Their parents could need it too"

I could see her letting people buy whatever they want as long as they put it through as a separate shop (pay twice) but was arsey with me for buying formula for my 5 month old who was with me!

I'm probably being OTT but yesterday we couldn't find milk anywhere after about 8 different shops and I got really scared, I just think she's being irresponsible.

She's really pissed me off. I want to report her but I think that's just because I'm really anxious.

I have never heard of baby milk in adult food. How weird.
Last year, long before this virus started my adult DS was prevented from buying more than 4 boxes of babymilk (aptimil?) for his young child. He wanted a specific brand that does not contain palm oil.
I have enormous sympathy for parents that are unable to buy baby formula or nappies due to others stockpiling.
No, I have not been stockpiling, but we are getting low on toilet paper, so we will try and buy some when we see some, but only a few rolls

milveycrohn · 19/03/2020 20:11

To add to the above, my elderly mother (now deceased) was given complan in the nursing home, not baby formula.
This because she could not swallow proper meals

Leaannb · 19/03/2020 20:19

@Madein1995 powdered milk, cofee and tea will not have nutritional value and will not put on weight for the elderly. Baby formula will. People who use baby formula for their elderly parents aren't putting a cup of tea or coffee above babies. They are putting the lives of their parents first.

Leaannb · 19/03/2020 20:22

@milveycrohn I hope you guys weren't trying to get her to gain weight. Complan only has 250 calories

TiddlestheCat · 19/03/2020 20:22

Actually, I think that you should feedback to the supermarket. Make clear that if people stockpile items and there is a shortage of baby formula, there could be grave consequences. Tell the shop that you're worried that this wasn't being enforced by staff. No need to report her as an individual.

Bathroom12345 · 19/03/2020 20:24

My DS said that his supermarket has said 3 of anything but if customer kicks off you can let them through. So, I guess who shouts loudest wins out.

Also you do realise these workers are NMW and have to put up with this crap. DS had two people ask him today whether staff got first ‘pickings of the products’!

Pineappletree33 · 19/03/2020 20:28

I’d report her. I’m sure the mother could eat something else. Babies are reliant on milk to stay alive.

Madein1995 · 19/03/2020 21:19

This is the first time I've every heard of elderly people being given formula. There's a reason why care homes don't give their elderly residents formula - becayse there's much better sources of nutrition available, even for those who can't eat actual food!

curlsnotfrizz · 19/03/2020 21:23

where do you want to report it to? Really, get a grasp!

milveycrohn · 19/03/2020 21:25

@Laeaannb.
I know the complain was added to her tea, I think because it thickened it, as she was having trouble swallowing.
As far as I know, she did not have baby formula added to anything!
We know about the complain because we were asked to purchase it. (But the nursing home provided it in the end)

alig99 · 19/03/2020 22:26

Yes report, she is being outrageous.

EmeraldShamrock · 19/03/2020 22:28

I'm sure if this was happening her supervisor would see her. Tbh in the current mayhem this sounds very unlikely.
Stressed retail staff being abused all week, then brags to an angry face customer who has a right strop on as the previous customer bought extra beer.
If real I bet she was pulling your leg to infuriate you further. 🤣

mathanxiety · 20/03/2020 01:53

Report to the shop manager, curlsnotfrizz.

mathanxiety · 20/03/2020 01:57

Leaannb Thu 19-Mar-20 19:49:03

@mathanxiety Doesn't mean she doesn't need it for her elderly parents at this time

Nonsense.

You don't buy up baby formula for an adult when baby formula is scarce. Adults have options when it comes to milk-like beverages, and most of them are ten times cheaper than formula too.

Babies don't have the choice to just drink water if parents can't find formula in the shops.

Spartak · 20/03/2020 02:09

I used to work for Asda on checkouts when I was a student. We were told to make conversation with each customer. I used to babble on about all kinds of bollocks to pass the time, show an interest in a customer's choice of fruit tea, clothing from George, ask about the weather outside, pretend I was a trainee astronaut in my spare time.

If you report to customer services, they'll make a note, maybe give you a £5 voucher to calm you down, and possibly speak to the cashier - she won't even recall the conversation, and Asda cannot police colleagues shopping habits anyway.

Monty27 · 20/03/2020 02:45

@MartinJD1976
Your post upthread saying..
'Have you nothing better to do then report a poorly paid front line shop worker who's at risk of catching COVID? Dear oh dear.'
I just couldn't agree more. Some posts on here are evil.
FFS the poor shopworker is probably exhausted and upset for everyone. Who knows what the back story is.
Sad

mathanxiety · 20/03/2020 04:11

'There, there baby, no there's no formula for you because someone bought it for her mother's cuppa, now be a dear and stop crying and think of the backstory instead.'

I am sure the baby will immediately get over herself.

Honeybee85 · 20/03/2020 04:18

I was thinking let it go when I was reading about the beer. The formula part really is infuriating.

Babies NEED milk, there’s a shortage of formula now and anyone buying formula now for anything other then to feed a baby is a fucking selfish cunt. I honestly don’t understand how people can be so heartless.

OtherVoicesOtherRooms · 20/03/2020 04:30

Sort yourself out OP.
You really are losing it.

Rosebel · 20/03/2020 07:00

Long life milk, evaporated milk? Not where I live. Not much fresh milk either. You don't know what the cashier is going through or even if she was just having a chat.
These are tough times for everyone but don't take it out on the wrong person.

Femail · 20/03/2020 07:14

YABU no dont report them the sales assistant is putting there health at risk by serving the public. Get a grip.

rwalker · 20/03/2020 07:48

GET A GRIP that poor poor supermarket work will of been abused form the moment she started to the moment she finished.
The woman used common sense who the fuck care if the shelves are stripped of beer when it's gone it's gone .
Bulk buying essential products is a different matter.
The reason they have a blanket rule is can you imagine going through everyones trolleys picking out certain products.
If you bought 4 scented candles I'm sure they wouldn't bother
More to the point you never know who you are dealing with and what they are capable of .
I worked in retail and in normal times I''ve been spat at threaten and had to run and products thrown at me (cordless phone)

TerrorWig · 20/03/2020 11:31

@rwalker conveniently missing the point about baby formula I see Hmm

Sure OP I suspect you’re supposed to just not feed your baby because some old lady is being fed formula instead of something more appropriate.

And then some posters tell YOU to get a grip! No one gives a fuck about the beer!

Magicpaintbrush · 20/03/2020 12:39

Not bothered about the beer - but the baby formula, just what?? That is needed for actual tiny babies, not adults. At the moment, when there isn't enough of everything to go around, nobody should be depriving babies of the food they need to survive when there is very little alternative to give them. An adult can switch to alternative foodstuffs if they have to - a baby can't.

Eckhart · 20/03/2020 13:45

To those saying no to reporting this to the shop manager, how do you think it should be dealt with?

Or do you think it's ok for supermarkets to allow their staff to break their own rules, which have been put in place to ensure that you, and everybody else, can find supplies on the shelves?
