“Woke” is a term used negatively. You know someone’s woke when they sound like they’ve just read a bunch of spirituality books and they start spouting it around to everyone as if it’s their own opinion they’ve had forever, but you can tell they haven’t done any work on themselves and it’s very eye-roll inducing.
Or anyone that claims to be “enlightened”.
RB is legit. I’ve loosely followed him for his whole career. He’s been in the gutter and he’s been a success, and realised it’s all a farce. He’s truly done the work with the 12 step program He’s genuinely studying religions. He’s got an incredible perspective from all of that. On top of that he is incredibly quick and has a really unique way of communicating.
I can see how it looks at first glance though, if the last time you saw him he was “pulling down his trousers and pants..”
and now he’s all guru-looking in his loose t-shirts and beads! I can’t deny he looks like a bit of a twat.
He is really self-aware and funny about his own ridiculousness, to be fair!
I agree with this
I have been through that journey with watching him too. He has been an asshole at various points in his life, but I genuinely think he has grown and has amazing self-awareness and is totally able to take the piss out of himself about his massive asshole days
I listen to his podcast - Under the Skin - and he has brilliant guests on, really explores topics, and yes, he has spirituality but I agree with him that ultra-rationalism (that is typical in our world right now) doesn't quite hit the mark for us humans - we need some spirituality to give us meaning and purpose.
I don't think that is woke - he isn't a virtual signalling 'follow the narrative to look good' type of person, which is how I would define woke. He is prepared to critically analyse things, go against the 'norms' around things like transgender, BLM and all the other isms that are typical at the moment.
GIven his journey, he is remarkably humble these days and has most definitely changed and I for one, can't help but respect that. People who are say they can't take anything he does seriously because of the Andrew Sachs days are confusing to me - is there no retribution for people? Don't we want people to be better people?
