To ask what funny covenants you've got on your house

I can't sleep (can you tell) and I'm going through the deeds of the house and one of the
(Many) covenants is that we're not allowed to sell fish on a Friday 😂 I read once about a landlord who instead of charging peppercorn rent insisted on 100 red roses 🌹 😂 I'm so excited that we're finally getting there now and we move in on Friday.

The only covenant our deeds mention is that we are not allowed to display any ‘advertisements’ for companies that have worked on our house.

Hope the move goes OK 😊

TheNanny23 · 18/03/2020 02:11

We cannot run a brothel...damn plan foiled

IanHislopForPm · 18/03/2020 02:13

@TheNanny23 ffs how upsetting! Grin

OP posts:
BrokenMumTeenDD · 18/03/2020 02:16

We cannot sell alcohol, run a brothel or do anything to change our roof

wavecatcher · 18/03/2020 02:17

We are not allowed to have a fun fair in the garden! It would be a very small one I'm sure but still not allowed. We are near a church and I know they have some over us also but I can't remember what they are.

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 18/03/2020 02:23

I’m not allowed to keep an alpaca in the back garden.

Doesn’t say anything about the front garden though...

solarisbabe · 18/03/2020 02:28

We are not allowed to mine for salt.

IanHislopForPm · 18/03/2020 02:29

@solarisbabe that actually did just make me laugh! How specific

OP posts:
BritWifeinUSA · 18/03/2020 03:48

Ours is boring...no more than three dogs on the premises at any one time.

GlamGiraffe · 18/03/2020 03:58

We have so many they come in a booklet!!
Amongst them, no displaying linen from windows and no livestock in the garden- (assuming children dont count!!)
Will have to find booklet to locate others

EscapeAga1n8194 · 18/03/2020 04:00

Connected to a church which is located miles away. Could be liable to pay for repairs on the church. I took something out to not pay for repairs.

birdshighinthesky · 18/03/2020 04:54

I bought a house in Nottingham and I wasn't allowed to: grind bones for glue making, make lace or candles. Ohh! What was there left to do?? Grin

ThankfullyAlive · 18/03/2020 05:10

Mine are all boring such as maintain a boundary fence. However, I used to work in property and some of my favourites are the ones from the 1960s leases done in London such as no beating your mats out of your windows. But the one that really stuck with me was no-one was allowed on the premises of unsound mind! How the hell you would determine who was and then police it baffles me. Obviously I understand the "logic" behind it but what were people thinking. Thankfully legislation has made such awful covenants illegal.

Jocasta2018 · 18/03/2020 05:39

You can't put white pvc double-glazing in the property, freehold or leasehold, in my 1980s-built estate.
The original external doors and windows were made of a dark wood so any replacements need to look the same - you could paint them white on the inside which looks nice.
Costs a fortune to have double-glazed windows with a dark wood look on the outside and fresh white on the inside!
Plus we should keep the original style fencing - wooden posts & bases for the panels. I replaced my fencing with concrete posts & bases and my neighbour got all hissy with me. I showed him the covenant about the external dark window frames and he soon shut up as he's recently had white windows installed....

Bashfulinseduary · 18/03/2020 05:43

We can only put our "night soil" out on specific days of the week.

Skigal86 · 18/03/2020 05:44

Don’t have the deeds to our current house but in our previous (1900s) house we weren’t allowed to make candles or keep a horse.

MinnieMountain · 18/03/2020 06:31

Some houses near Cambridge aren't allowed to grow cabbages or brassicas during certain dates. I presume it's do with experimental growing.

PlumsGalore · 18/03/2020 06:34

How interesting. Mine are boring like no caravans or motorhomes on the drive, which is a very welcome covenant!

Murinae · 18/03/2020 06:36

We aren’t allowed to sell any of our garden to one specific neighbour for 21 years. The land used to build our house belonged to the other neighbour and they fell out!

MaggieFS · 18/03/2020 06:36

Boring one - no hanging washing out the front.

chockaholic72 · 18/03/2020 06:37

In my old house I couldn’t register a business from that address, and I did look at a house for sale where no rotary washing lines were allowed.

Sipperskipper · 18/03/2020 06:38

Our previous house had a covenant that said we couldn’t sell beer from it. No problem there, we just drank it all.

GuyMartinsSideburns · 18/03/2020 06:38

Built 1900, can’t have a tannery business out the back or make gin.

WhenDoesTheWashingEnd · 18/03/2020 06:46

I love some of these! Grin

Ours is boring, just that we can't do any external building without the original developers permission.
House was built in the 60's and developers still in business which surprised us a bit.

VeniVidiVoxi · 18/03/2020 06:49

No caravans or commercial vehicles to be kept at my house so that's my chip van plan scuppered. I always wondered what would happen if we didn't comply? Who is watching?
