To ask what funny covenants you've got on your house

I can't sleep (can you tell) and I'm going through the deeds of the house and one of the
(Many) covenants is that we're not allowed to sell fish on a Friday 😂 I read once about a landlord who instead of charging peppercorn rent insisted on 100 red roses 🌹 😂 I'm so excited that we're finally getting there now and we move in on Friday.

We aren't allowed to run a brothel. So we had a very light hearted brothel themed party.

drspouse · 18/03/2020 11:28

No pigs at ours; the old house was no tanneries!

Bringringbring12 · 18/03/2020 11:31

Repaint entire building (beautiful converted building with five flats) every 4 years.

It costs £22,000 all in (including scaffolding)

We’ve done it once in last 12 years

Fckingfuming · 18/03/2020 11:34

No pigs, also not allowed to rip out hedge to replace with wall. Guess what replaced the hedge?Grin

MidsomerMum · 18/03/2020 11:37

I lived in one where we weren’t allowed to sell the clay available in the garden (but could sell any sand).

I also know of someone with an underground spring which if used must be for the good of the whole village. I always think that’s wonderfully vague.

littlejalapeno · 18/03/2020 11:37

We’re not allowed to make bricks or fire them

FenellaVelour · 18/03/2020 11:50

There’s a big supermarket in the midlands where they had to lay out the aisles differently to their normal style because technically they could only sell booze in one corner.

But, but... where does the sale actually take place? The booze on the shelves is an invitation to treat. Whereabouts in the store are the tills?

Happygirl79 · 18/03/2020 11:54

Lived in a converted Chapel
No dancing!

SuburbanFraggle · 18/03/2020 12:07

A pig

TheFaerieQueene · 18/03/2020 12:12

We can’t name our house - built in 1865 - church cottage or anything churchy. No probs here - atheists and proud. That said, I do have a wonderful view of the massive stained glass window in the church from our courtyard. It is lovely, I’m an atheist not a philistine! 😇

Concestor · 18/03/2020 12:28

I'm not allowed to keep chickens. Is actually quite like to so it's annoying.

GlamGiraffe · 18/03/2020 12:33

I've looked in the book, in addition to the previously listed...
no sheds,
no boundary walls or fences (hedges only),

No removal of plants shrubs or hedging
No turning front gardens Into hardstandings (the path is 150 got long so would be interesting tying to drive down it!!🤣🤣)
No clothing or linen to be visible from outside the property
No caravans or motor homes
Not allowed to change colours of external paintwork colour (ie front door) without permission - I had to give paint code and describe colour
Payment of chancel tax (no idea where the allegedly nearby church is) we have an indemnity. I think that may now be a non existent thing since a couple of years ago??
Heges must he kept to 6ft exacyly🤣 erm no although I could no be a hobby over the next few months
House cannot be brought into disrepute ☹
No running a business from the property ( could link that to point above 😁 bit that's stupid nowadays)

Stupid thing is my jeighbours would actually report any and all of these. Like they could see our clothes (inside our house) from the outside - technically not allowed 🙄
Painting of exterior🙄etc

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/03/2020 12:34

My late brother once owned a flat that contained a covenant that allowed him to keep one tethered goat on the opposite green Grin.

BlythesEyes · 18/03/2020 12:42

1860's house
...our neighbour has the right to draw water from the well in our garden. This is despite the fact that it is dry and has been for a century or more.

Prepenultimate · 18/03/2020 12:49

We can't use the back garden to make clay bricks

Riv · 18/03/2020 12:50

No clothing or linen to be visible from outside the property what! 😱Could get a bit chilly!

magoria · 18/03/2020 12:55

I can't keep pigs.

Saz12 · 18/03/2020 13:00

I’m not allowed to charge more than a penny to people using the (public) road our house is on, nor allow it to be used without charge.
Sshhhh.

MrsClatterbuck · 18/03/2020 13:01

Laughing at the livestock one. We had a neighbour in our old house a few doors down who kept 2 goats in their front garden. And a donkey who wasn't there for long. We didn't have any funny covenants but we were leasehold and our lease was for 10,000 years

tiramisususu · 18/03/2020 13:14

We can't burn bricks, run a steam engine, or run a brothel!

Neverwrestlewithapig · 18/03/2020 13:15

We must have a bat box 🦇

species5618 · 18/03/2020 13:33

Why the Alpaca covenant though? Are they a particularly obnoxious animal in some way?

BlackeyedSusan · 18/03/2020 13:35

You absolute bastard nanny.... Your post needs a health warning... Snorting coffee up nose..

If the Corona virus doesn't get me choking on coffee will.

As part of our lease we are supposed to do something to the drains every week and clean the windows once a month. We are supposed to get our choice of window dressings approved.

Rollinghillside · 18/03/2020 13:37

No pigs, also not allowed to rip out hedge to replace with wall. Guess what replaced the hedge?

A wall of pigs!

MRex · 18/03/2020 13:38

We can't make alcohol on our property. Thankfully it says nothing about drinking alcohol.
