Missed a call on my phone. It purported to be from a Chester number. The message left was from a computer voicebox.

It said

I had a missed call on my phone allegedly from HMRC -

There is a tax fraud case registered in your name

You have to press 1 to get connected to the officer of HMRC

If in case you don’t press 1 and your call is not connected to us the warrant will be issued in your name straight away and you will get arrested shortly

Given the shit grammar and obvious scam nature I just laughed, but it is annoying that the authorities seem powerless to stop these cunts

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 16/03/2020 13:14

I get those all the time. So annoying.

bluebells1 · 16/03/2020 13:15

Scam. I had a similar call from an Indian call centre. It starts off with a "Call from the HMRC, please hold for agent" message and then a shady guy takes over and he threatened me with an arrest. I asked him to name the person he wants to speak to, considering this is a multi occupancy house (it is not!). He tried to dodge that but I held firm. He called me a stupid bitch and hung up.

BlackeyedSusan · 16/03/2020 13:19

Oh and I am getting calls from some insolvency centre.

And texts telling me Jayne has gone missing.

champagneplanet · 16/03/2020 13:21

I've had a few of these, there is actually a page on the hmrc site warning about them. Block them.

I got a call from a man called Harry who said he was from HMRC and he was investigating fraud. Said he was going to ring me back.
Months later I'm still waiting. ..
Strange thing was I'd just inherited some money and it had literally arrived in my account the day before.
Made me wonder if 'Harry' could see my account.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 16/03/2020 13:26

I've been getting automated calls from various numbers beginning with '013' stating they are my Internet Service Provider. They informed me my internet was due to be disconnected within 24-48 hours unless I pressed '1' to connect to their executive. I just ignored. They then re-dialled every couple of hours on different numbers always beginning with the same prefix.

If they don't state my ISP's name and my name then they are obviously scammers.

lidoshuffle · 16/03/2020 13:28

I've had one saying my Amazon Prime in due for renewal and £39.99 is coming out of my account unless I press 1.

I've never had Prime.

OverTheGrillesAndFaraday · 16/03/2020 13:29

Yep, had a few of these.

Always makes me worry that older or otherwise vulnerable people are getting them and being scared silly.

There's a special level in hell...

5foot5 · 16/03/2020 13:39

I had one of these only last week!

TerrorWig · 16/03/2020 13:42

I used to get them all the time till I unplugged my landline. They were practically the only calls I ever got!

Sparklesocks · 16/03/2020 13:46

had one on Saturday actually! it was from a London 0208 number (or so it seemed). Such cheeky gits.

BettyIsMyFavouriteSquirrel · 16/03/2020 13:47

I haven’t had this one (yet) but I used to get the “we’re calling about a car accident” one almost every day. I try and keep them on the phone as long as possible because if they’re talking to me then they’re not scamming someone else.

ALongHardWinter · 16/03/2020 14:08

Ignore ignore ignore! It's a scam OP. I've not actually had one of these but I know of 3 people who have and they were advised it's a scam call.

pigsDOfly · 16/03/2020 14:22

I've had the Amazon Prime one, also don't have an Amazon Prime account, likewise Paypal.

I had one the other day, with a guy saying he was calling to fix my BT broadband. I said why are you calling me about BT broadband? 'Not BT,' he said, 'I meant Sky'. Okay.

Xenia · 16/03/2020 14:25

I have not had an HMRC one but they are definitely scams. I get the Amazon prime (have never had an amazon prime account)! I get landline calls from Openreach and even the telephone preference service - they are all scammers from India. they will say something like I am Jim from Openreach and I will so - no you are an Indian scammer.

Lynda07 · 16/03/2020 14:28

Yes I get all sorts. I rarely hear my landline which is in another room and almost never used but I do check who has called by dialling 1471 and if there are messages. I google the telephone numbers of people who haven't left messages and they are often call centres selling stuff.

Just ignore.

mumwon · 16/03/2020 14:44

I get number & check who-called-me? this shows other peoples comments & info about call

Hockeyboysmum · 16/03/2020 14:47

Its constant. My 10 year old got a text and voicemail saying hes due a tax rebate... I wish

maddiemookins16mum · 16/03/2020 14:47

I work in tax. Believe me, HMRC do not phone people like that. If you did have any problems with your tax, they’d write to you.

Chickenitalia · 16/03/2020 14:51

So many of these at the moment, I seem to be getting multiple each day from different numbers. Can only presume it’s places trying it on as a lot more people will be at home all day. They’re all rubbish, be it HMRC, internet, prime, Microsoft. All out to scam you.
It’s got to the point I’m surprised when I get a genuine call tbh.

mrsbyers · 16/03/2020 14:52

HMRC do not have any Indian call centres and do not make these type of calls

Twinkletoes888 · 16/03/2020 14:58

Yep I had one the other day, said exactly the same thing, said they would issue a warrant for my arrest I said make sure your send a good looking copper then, he hung up. Still waiting...

ilovesooty · 16/03/2020 15:05

Got one from a London number 2 minutes ago. Monica from HMRC sounded very threatening...

DontCallMeShitley · 16/03/2020 15:15

I had an e.mail last week telling me my TV licence had been cancelled and to click a link to reinstate it.

I didn't have one in the first place. Suppose some people might be taken in by it though.

ginderella20 · 16/03/2020 15:15

I'm getting these calls every other day now from (not) Amazon.
I'm blocking every number on BT, but they keep on coming...
