Missed a call on my phone. It purported to be from a Chester number. The message left was from a computer voicebox.

It said

I had a missed call on my phone allegedly from HMRC -

There is a tax fraud case registered in your name

You have to press 1 to get connected to the officer of HMRC

If in case you don’t press 1 and your call is not connected to us the warrant will be issued in your name straight away and you will get arrested shortly

Given the shit grammar and obvious scam nature I just laughed, but it is annoying that the authorities seem powerless to stop these cunts

OP posts:
KatherineJaneway · 16/03/2020 15:17

Had some of these, just a scam.

willowpatterns · 16/03/2020 15:22

Lol - the one thing HMRC will not do during an ongoing fraud investigation is to tell you...

Toddlerteaplease · 16/03/2020 15:23

I get one from a Liverpool number. I only answer as I have friends in Liverpool. But it's so
Obviously a scam that I hang up immediately.

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2020 15:25

I got a non automated call about my Internet being cut off. I shouted at the man and hung up.

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2020 15:26

I then went to check the Internet was still on :)

DustyMaiden · 16/03/2020 15:46

Yes, and a person said there was a warrant out for my arrest. I did laugh.

Sh05 · 16/03/2020 15:51

Not had a call but a text message supposedly from DVLA telling me I'm owed a refund on my car tax. Never owned a car of my own and I googled the number, it's a scam message.

Sh05 · 16/03/2020 15:52

I've downloaded the Truecaller app on my mobile, it automatically blocks numbers that have been reported as scam

GrumpyHoonMain · 16/03/2020 15:54

I usually pretend I work for the CBI (India’s version of the FBI) and it tends to end the call sharpish.

twoshedsjackson · 16/03/2020 16:13

A friend of mine actually manages without a personal computer; rare these days, I know. But he still got a call from an Eastern European gentleman telling that the problem with his internet connection needed fixing. Said gentleman was incredulous when told that my friend had no computer to fix, but eventually, having been strung along for a while by my friend, who enjoys a bit of cold-caller baiting, asked him if he wore women's clothes. "Why?" my friend asked in bafflement, "Because you sound like cross-dresser!" came the exasperated reply. "And you sound like an ae!" he was told. Phone slammed down; go figure. At least he was prevented from stringing some other poor soul along for half an hour or so.
I've also had the HMRC one; if you're going to scam convincingly, for goodness sake get someone with a grasp of English grammar to make the call.

QuestionableMouse · 16/03/2020 16:21

If you're with Talk Talk you can set up call screening where they have to give a name and you get a choice to accept or decline the call. I did it for my parents a few months ago because they were constantly getting scam calls (10+ a day sometimes).

Yallreadyforthis · 16/03/2020 16:52

I got the " your internet needs upgrading, go to your computer and download....."

copperoliver · 16/03/2020 16:57

It's a scam. I had it too. Did not reply to it but rang the number I already had for HMRC, when they give you the options it actually asks, have to have had such a call.
I told the operator exactly what had happened he confirmed it's a scam and apologised. X

CatTangle · 16/03/2020 17:05

My old neighbour got one of these. He was bricking it (he'd been working 'off the books' for years).
I was SO tempted to tell him it was genuine...

DoTheNextRightThing · 16/03/2020 17:14

Yeah got one just a few weeks ago. It's quite intimidating! Obviously nonsense but still not a pleasant call!

vingt · 16/03/2020 17:15

I had one of those scam calls about a warrant for my arrest, I went out shopping (a few months ago now) and had two policemen in the queue behind me Shock Grin

ultrablue · 16/03/2020 17:41

Get these all the time, the strangest one was an automated message from the American counter terrorism unit telling me that I had hacked into the FBI systemand if I didn't press 1 to tell them it wasn't me they would send some one to arrest me. I really hope that they send Jack Bauer round to take me away mmmm.

sueelleker · 16/03/2020 17:42

I keep getting emails to say there's a problem with my online bank account (lots of different banks) I don't have online banking for that reason.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 16/03/2020 18:24

I had one telling me there was a serious error on my P.C "that needed fixing immediately!"

"Righto", I said, "I'll pass you over to Mr Trapped who works in IT and has never noticed a problem"

They hung up, never to call again. Grin

Trentmum · 16/03/2020 18:31

I got one of these calls recently and just asked the caller ‘How do you go to work every day when all you do is try to defraud people? How can you sleep at night? We all know you are just scamming. Is your Mum proud of you, do you think?’. They hung up.

Lordfrontpaw · 16/03/2020 18:37

I feel quite left out as Ive never been threatened wit HMRC or with a warrant. I just get idiots asking about my accident or telling me that my amazon prime is about to charge my annual fee (press1) then get told that my pc is under attack.

Last one I got was a few weeks ago and I was feeling very very stressed and pissed off when they called - so I yelled a bit. Then the buggers called back and DS picked up the phone. He was on for ages pretending to go along, asking loads of questions until they gave up. They haven’t called back.

Thesuzle · 16/03/2020 18:39

Definite scam, put the phone down and leave it for a bit then dial 1572 BT and follow instructions to block the number

Joans3rddaughter · 16/03/2020 18:44

My elderly mother with Dementia was getting repeated phone calls. My BIL answered the phone but didn't say anything. The person on the other end shouted "Dont you dare put the fucking phone down on me again" Needless to say, BIL had a polite (not)word with him.

Likefootball · 16/03/2020 18:58

I got a call asking about an "accident I had in my car 2/3 years ago" . I have never drove let alone had a car.
Also I get recorded messages saying BT are going to disconnect my internet in 24/48 hours.
I am not a BT customer.

laughinglettuce · 16/03/2020 19:10

My Mum had one last week. Scared her stupid.

Just ignore and block the number.
