My smell

So this man i know says he can 'smell' where a woman is in her monthly cycle. Is he full of shit? Or does anyone know any men who can genuinely sense this?

OP posts:

Humans are animals. We smell more than we think we do. And absolutely some do have a more acute sense of smell.

I smell illness. I can smell lots of things but never really think about it in any depth but I do keep my distance if a smell is worrying.

So people calling bullshit are wrong. We all secrete pheromones, hormones etc and we all smell, even when clean.

Some people have super sense of taste or hearing, some a brilliant eyesight and for other a strong sense of smell.

Of course some men may be more in tune with cycles subconsciously. They may also smell more than most. This man has realised he can detect a change of smell at this time and he probably can.

This is biological and natural. We are not evolved just because we have technology. We are still the human animal.

Winnipegdreamer · 14/03/2020 11:17

I’m guessing so, my OH is definitely more horny when I’m ovulating. I’m guessing the pheromones maybe? He also knows not to try at other times as I’d probably stab him... so maybe not down to smell at all Wink

Reginabambina · 14/03/2020 11:19

Yes, this is a thing. Ovulation has a certain smell which men are quick to pick up on. I remember reading that it’s supposed to smell like off butter but my husband insists that I smell like fresh grass when I’m in my fertile window.

Reginabambina · 14/03/2020 11:28

Just cane to mind I can also smell when DH has accumulated sperm (e.g. when we haven’t had sex/he hasn’t masturbated for a few days). He could also tell when I was pregnant after a couple of days.

CouscousEvaporator · 14/03/2020 11:52

My DH can smell when I ovulate. I didn’t think that was weird? He says my hair smells different. His behaviour also changes with me a couple of days before.
This was handy when we were TTC...

Thankfully he can’t tell when I’m on 😆

motherheroic · 14/03/2020 12:14

When he says smell I assume he is talking about a hormonal sort of smell, instead of just straight up smelling blood.

I can smell when I'm approaching ovulation.

motherheroic · 14/03/2020 12:18

@Glassio You described it perfectly when you described the smell as a 'warmth'.

DowntownAbby · 14/03/2020 12:27

Of course it's possible.

We're all sensitive to the pheromones of the opposite sex.

I thought it was well known that ovulating/fertile females are especially attractive to males?

happyandsingle · 14/03/2020 12:32

This is the type of thread a weirdo would post to get some sexual kicks.
Funny enough a lot of weird threads like this popping up lately.
Be careful how you reply ladies you could unknowingly be giving some creep out there his sexual kicks.

GirlFliesHome · 14/03/2020 12:34

Oh! I have just realised. I spend an awful lot of time in care homes and people smell different when they are about to die. I cannot describe it, but I have several times 'known' someone is about to die within about 2 days i think.

dontgobaconmyheart · 14/03/2020 12:38

what sort of conversation would this come up in OP? He sounds like a complete creep, what a tragic stealth boast. How is he proving that he knows this? That he guessed correctly once? I hardly imagine he is going up to women to ask and they are confirming rather than calling HR and giving him a swerve. He probably thinks he is flirting with you OP, proving what a man he is sniffing out fertile women with his heightened virility. Very embarrassing.

AwrightDoreenTakeAFuckinDayOff · 14/03/2020 12:48

I could always tell if the dog was about to be poorly by her smell.

She also kept nipping my chest when she was sprawled on top of me on the sofa. She was clearly aware of the lump long before me... @

GirlFliesHome · 14/03/2020 12:55

It is really well documented that dogs often find cancer in their human companions before the doctors do.

i find it fascinating.

OlaEliza · 14/03/2020 13:07

Methinks mid cycle smell thing must be bollocks though?

I dunno, we must emit pheromones when ovulating, probably.

mintyt · 15/03/2020 07:18

@LynetteScavo it's a "heavy" smell not unpleasant but heavy and musky

mintyt · 15/03/2020 07:22

Also a work a friend came up to me and said Minty I smell can you smell me so I sniffed her near her armpit ( we're good friends) and said to her are you on Prozac, and she was. Just recently started.

Changedmyname84 · 15/03/2020 07:29

I can smell when I’m coming up to ovulation - my DH has not said he can smell me but he always wants sex when I’m ovulating and he doesn’t know that I am if that makes sense?

I’ve not ever mentioned it to him but it’s quite funny how he’s much friendlier to me when I ovulate! So I must be ‘letting off’ something?

UserXRay29 · 15/03/2020 07:31

I can smell when a woman is on her period, but usually only women I know well. I need a comparable smell - God I sound disgusting!

onetimer · 15/03/2020 07:42

I seem to be able to smell when someone has a chest infection or similar, but maybe that's because they're ill and their breath changes.

But the fact that gets me everytime is that smell is particulate. So when you go into a public loo after someone and you can smell their wee, poo, or personal area, you're actually breathing in microscopic particles of their poo, wee or personal area.

Bezalelle · 15/03/2020 08:07

Surely it's basic biology for males to know what part of their cycles females are in. It's how we're designed.

My cat can tell when I'm on my period, the bloodthirsty ginger git.

AJPTaylor · 15/03/2020 08:08

Lol.
So what has he done then, walked up to dozens of women like some kind of street magician and said " you are on day 14, I'm right aren't I?" Followed by confirmation from them that he is indeed right.

SuburbanCrofter · 15/03/2020 08:17

I can smell illness too. Also food cooking that is about to burn, before anyone else can.

Interestingly, my sense of smell increases at certain points of my cycle - I think when I'm ovulating.

Or, it could be a woman asking a genuine question. I started a thread a while ago (different user name) on a similar subject regarding hygiene. Due to amount of reports (as clearly I had to be a male perv) the thread was suspended whilst the moderator checked my history, then reinstated.
