Just that really. Do you have a favourite artist? Or style? And why does it sing to you?
Only got in to art a couple of years ago and feel like a whole new world has been opened up - so would love to know who else I should be learning about.

Margaret Ashman is amazing, I've been able to buy some of her work. Love Tom Lewis too.

Pinkarsedfly · 13/03/2020 19:10

TheMarzipanDildo we have that print above our bed! DH fell in love with her when we saw it in Edinburgh Art Gallery. Said it was sexy as fuck Grin

Iusedtobeapartygirl · 13/03/2020 19:13

I know I'm being very unoriginal but I love Vincent Van Gogh.

I just love the colours, the swirling shapes and am so moved by the tragedy of his mental illness and his early death.

A compete and utter tragic genius.

TheMemoryLingers · 13/03/2020 19:14

I don't have a single favourite but some of my most-liked are:

Barbara Hepworth
Edward Burne-Jones
Rene Magritte
Duane Hanson
L S Lowry

^^yes that is a cloud shaped like a cock there.

dontdoxmeeither · 13/03/2020 19:14

Jackson Pollock

Just something about the seemingly randomness coming together. I could look at Summertimes for hours.

For Banksy lovers- I had an email off him about 14yrs ago after I contacted him asking him (on the complete off chance) if he'd send a little something for my nephews 18th as he was a massive fan. Told me I had a nice pair of emotional thumbscrews and sent an envelope, complete with upside down stamp (!) with some stickers and a signed Di Faced Tenner ❤️

SparklesAllOver · 13/03/2020 19:16

berryfull Look at Graham Sendall's work, quirky, beautiful, something mysterious that makes you want to jump into one of his paintings and find out more. I am trying to buy one of his pieces at the moment, I have never really been into art but I saw one of his pictures over a decade ago and I wanted more!

Handsnotwands · 13/03/2020 19:16

For some more recent artists, but not modern art, I love

James Gillick
Valeiry Gridnev, especially his dancers
Karl Martens (absolute fave)
And when I’m rich I’ll have Jemma Phipps draw my children

Justajot · 13/03/2020 19:22

I love Hepworth. I am more attracted to 3D art and her work gives me a tingly sensation.

BidieIn · 13/03/2020 19:25

For drawn portraits Hans Holbein
Klimt for sheer decorative delight.
Schiele for his fabulous use of line drawing.

DuesToTheDirt · 13/03/2020 19:36

Nice to see so many El Greco fans. Don't think I've seen Meindert Hobbema mentioned, love him, his paintings are like little fairytales. Also Gainsborough (mostly, he did a couple of duff ones), and William McTaggart's Storm is a favourite.

And having always found paintings of Venice rather dull (Canaletto) I belatedly discover that Guardi is a different kettle of fish and much more interesting.

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 13/03/2020 19:37

Joseph Wright - so underrated. My favourite painting is an experiment on a bird in an air pump by Wright. I love the seemingly sourceless illumination in the painting (a feature of many of Wright’s painting) and all the different reactions of the subjects in the painting to the same event.

I get from his paintings that a lot of his painting are almost setting off the popular science of the time (mid to late 18th century) with the alchemy/magic that has gone before whilst recognising the new perspectives on feelings which were being developed at that time. It might not be what other people get from his paintings but it is how the speak to me. That is why art is so amazing experiencing creativeness (albeit someone else’s) is what makes me feel alive.

hels71 · 13/03/2020 19:45

Turner. When I look at his paintings I just feel like I am there.

Genderwitched · 13/03/2020 19:50

Modern artists that I like include Luc Tuymans, Michael Borremans, Peter Doig, and Kaye Donachie, who does lovely portraits.

BelfryBat · 13/03/2020 19:55

My favourite is Raoul Dufy, I love his exuberance and the light in his paintings. I also like Paul Klee a lot, and Matisse. Where living artists are concerned, I am a big fan of Dee Nickerson and have one of her paintings. To be honest, there are very few painters I've seen whose work I don't like: Jackson Pollock leaves me cold, and so does Egon Schiele.

Pipandmum · 13/03/2020 20:06

Henri Matisse. Love the colour and energy in his paintings but really love love love his cut outs. I trained as a graphic designer and his cut outs just make me happy. They are HUGE in real life and I'm thinking of getting a wall size mural of one in my next bedroom...
I find colour is the thing i react to in art, though I am looking at a black welded steel sculpture by Lee Tribe (NY based English sculptor) I have next to my fireplace which is lyrical in its forms and also brings me joy. His work is very different now but he could make cold metal dance.

Horsefeather · 13/03/2020 20:11

@Genderwitched, I saw a brilliant Luc Tuymans show in Venice this summer.

TressiliansStone · 13/03/2020 20:17

Don't have a favourite, but am currently quite partial to Andy Goldsworthy.

Not sure why, but I enjoy the settings of his work – and then there's the transience of many works, which is quite difficult for me to accept, so it challenges me.

Pieceofpurplesky · 13/03/2020 20:23

Any of the pre raphaelites but April Love by Arthur Hughes is one of my favourites for its simplicity, the fall of her scarf, the sprinkle of flowers ...
That said I also love Vermeer as his paintings tell a millions stories. Anything vanitas too.

Modern artists - I love Jiri Borsky. His colours, his roundness ...

Snorkelface · 13/03/2020 20:35

Joaquin Sorolla - painting with light, just beautiful.

notawittyname1954 · 13/03/2020 20:39

Rossetti, because his life was so interesting and his paintings are beautiful. Also Frida Kahlo again because of how her paintings show her life.

honeyloops · 13/03/2020 20:45

Helen Delmaire - she's not super famous I don't think, but her work is just beautiful. Really gorgeous, dark, nuanced portraits, mostly of women.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2020 20:47

I'm also very fond of the work of Gary Bunt.

Chouradanilova · 13/03/2020 20:48

@LakieLady, No, I’ve never been there, but I really need to see that room, thank you for telling me about it.

Duchessofblandings · 13/03/2020 20:49

Louis Icart. Playful, decadent and gorgeous.
