Just that really. Do you have a favourite artist? Or style? And why does it sing to you?
Only got in to art a couple of years ago and feel like a whole new world has been opened up - so would love to know who else I should be learning about.

Can't narrow it down to one, but 5 maybe? Turner, John Martin, Casper David Friedrich, Klimt, Blake.

lynsey91 · 13/03/2020 17:03

I think Monet has to be my favourite. I particularly love his paintings of London, they are so atmospheric.

I also love his paintings of his garden. Me and DH visited it about 5 years ago and it is just beautiful

All this talk of Velazquez, El Greco, Caravaggio and co reminds me of art history A level - feeling v nostalgic now!

The most amazing painting I've seen in real life was The Adoration of the Magi (El Greco) at the Prado.

But the artist I thought of was Charles Tunnicliffe- couldn't get much more different from El Greco! He painted Britain's native birds and animals, rural scenes, etc - including the illustrations for the Ladybird "What to look for in spring..." etc books.

The Kelpies are amazing. I was awestruck when I first saw them.

Barbara Hepworth and Antony Gormly.

Lweji · 13/03/2020 17:48

Van Gogh mainly.
I love the energy and drama of his strokes.

BestIsWest · 13/03/2020 17:48

Hepworth’s NHS drawings are great.

I was really into Francis Bacon and Gentileschi at school. They’re so dark though.

I have a print of this Singer Sargent one on my wall which I think is beautiful

Crikey. The vast majority of these artists are long long dead . Does anyone know any living artists?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 13/03/2020 18:32

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Vladimir Kush yet ...

It's hard to choose but -

Caravaggio
Manet
John Singer Sargent
Bridget Riley
Kandinsky

Sorry, I couldn't choose one.

Thanks for this thread amongst the madness.

Fluffybutter · 13/03/2020 18:50

Dali or Hieronymus Bosch.
I live that I can look at their paintings for ages and always find something I didn’t notice before

Beebumble2 · 13/03/2020 18:52

Love too many to mention, but if I had a few million I’d buy a David Hockney landscape.

Bubbletrouble43 · 13/03/2020 18:56

I like lots but I have a print I love by Michael praed, very cornish. I love this thread: it's giving me new artists to look up and taking my mind off you know what. Thanks op.

Bubbletrouble43 · 13/03/2020 18:57

Btw not the actor who played robin hood!

LadyofMisrule · 13/03/2020 19:01

David Farren

I saw some of his work in a gallery and would love to own some.

Bubbletrouble43 · 13/03/2020 19:02

Also love van Gogh. The poignancy of his irises painting and the fact they are my favourite flowers and I love his style make it my favourite famous painting.

SurferRona · 13/03/2020 19:02

Love this thread! I like the British Modernism work, particularly from Cornwall. Such an interesting period for creative arts, the movement really moved the dial in UK. As PP said, dead= Ben Nicholson, gives me shivers, SO good; alive= figurative artist Neil Pinkett. And for those who like Turner, please check out Ben Warner- very talented. Also like Heron and Lanyon @HeronLanyon

The Spanish artist Sorolla...known as the master of light!!

If you haven't heard of him please have a look, he's amazing and very underrated. His beach paintings are so uplifting.

Muddlingalongalone · 13/03/2020 19:05

I don't know very much about art but love this thread for some fab artists I've never heard of.
Monet is my fave artist. I went to Giverny as a young teen & it was fabulous!

Iamagree · 13/03/2020 19:07

Barbara Hepworth - such a sense of the soul and feel of shapes and materials
Louise Bourgeois - a pioneer, such insight into what it is to be a woman
