Just that really. Do you have a favourite artist? Or style? And why does it sing to you?
Only got in to art a couple of years ago and feel like a whole new world has been opened up - so would love to know who else I should be learning about.

@Sarahlou252 ah yes some beautiful ones you have. I have The Call of the Trees and I think it’s enchanting.
You’re right, they are very Enid blyton. Love them.

HappydaysArehere · 13/03/2020 15:08

The most wonderful painting I have seen is Vermeer’s The Dairy Maid.
Love David Hockney who shows me what I haven’t seen before - his trees at the RA a few years ago. It made me really look at the trees everywhere I went and at different times of the year.
Then there is Van Gogh who painted with such emotion and breathed life into everything he saw.

Cocolapew · 13/03/2020 15:14

Monet, his paintings are so relaxing.
Also Norman Rockwell.

HappydaysArehere · 13/03/2020 15:19

Have to add Lowry.Love his paintings and his life is so fascinating and he was such a character.

Too many!
Caravaggio is my absolute favourite. We saw one of his less famous paintings in a church in Rome and DH got bored of waiting for me so went and got coffee!!

Dalí - we were lucky enough to go to the museum I’m Florida last year.

Jonathon Yeo - great portraits.

Grayson Perry - I don’t love everything he’s done but love his pottery.

Last one I promise, in the NPG there is a huge painting by George Hayter (attached) that I can stand in front of for hours.

@bridgetreilly

Could you say why? I can’t find my way into her work as much as I want to.

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 15:40

Turner by a country mile. His use of colour is something else.

Maria Helena Vieira da Silva ( 1908 – 1992)

A Portuguese abstract painter.A leading member of the European abstract expressionism movement known as Art Informel. Her works feature complex interiors and city views using lines that explore space and perspective.

I first saw her work when visiting the Musee des Beaux Arts in Dijon & fell in love with it. It doesn't reproduce well on the internet & even worse on the attached photo but she's well worth a look.

I love El Greco, his work is so wonderfully weird and expressive, and totally ahead of its time. I was very moved by seeing a lot of his works in Toledo.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2020 15:49

And the Brueghels..

HeretoThereandBackAgain · 13/03/2020 15:50

I love photography- Thomas Mangelson is my favourite.

I enjoy Caravaggio’s work too.

The Andy Scott sculpture someone linked too upthread is fabulous!

LakieLady · 13/03/2020 16:02

I'm having a bit of an Eric Ravilious phase at the moment, but I love Rousseau and Turner.

I also love this man's work www.petermesser.com/gallery/current-work.html#! and am lucky enough to own two.

He combines pitch-perfect technique with an utterly bonkers view of the world.

Chouradanilova · 13/03/2020 16:11

Stanley Spencer and Eric Ravilious, also Walter Sickert.

madamedesevigne · 13/03/2020 16:18

Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning. I could look at their paintings all day.

Wineloffa · 13/03/2020 16:25

Mercurial123 · 13/03/2020 16:29

CustardOmlet · 13/03/2020 16:30

Lee Miller and Imogen Cunningham for photography, love both their work. Banksy and Dhali for paintings.

LakieLady · 13/03/2020 16:32

@Chouradanilova, have you been to the Towner in Eastbourne? They've got a whole room of Ravilious stuff.

thegcatsmother · 13/03/2020 16:34

Bruegel the Elder for his capturing of the colour of a Flemish winter sky, and the little hidden observations of life in his work.

BestIsWest · 13/03/2020 16:41

So many great artists mentioned.
I like Velasquez and Rembrandt. Also Sonia Delaunay. And Andrew Wyeth. And Gwen John.
