Just that really. Do you have a favourite artist? Or style? And why does it sing to you?
Only got in to art a couple of years ago and feel like a whole new world has been opened up - so would love to know who else I should be learning about.

Marc Chagall for me. I like the dreamlike surrealism.

Also Klimt: his pictures are sexy.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/03/2020 10:02

I don't know very much about Art and I thought Grayson Perry was some nice bloke in a dress, and his actual life was his art, if you see what I mean. But I saw his work at the RA recently and really loved it. So clever.

pinkyredrose · 13/03/2020 10:03

I am not very knowledgeable about art, but I know what I like! oxymoron right there! Grin

I like Dali.

HaudMaDug · 13/03/2020 10:11

I love a Dali. I was blown away when I first seen the Christ of St John on the Cross at the Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow. ( Not sure if its still there or maybe on tour).

Zenithbear · 13/03/2020 10:16

I love fantasy art especially if it's a bit kinky or macabre. I love the being able to see into the artists imagination a bit like reading a brilliant story. I'm a big fan of many and I can't choose one so...
Favourites are
Dimitri Patalis
Stefano Koidl
Ben Newman
Boris Vallejo
Luis Royo
William Blake

Downunderduchess · 13/03/2020 10:33

Chagall. His paintings are like vivid dreams that you can’t explain but you totally understand.

LoveVelo · 13/03/2020 10:56

@zenithbear, you may also enjoy Hieronymus Bosch. His paintings are fascinating.

DontGetYrTitsInATangle · 13/03/2020 11:00

I'm not terribly arty at all but I'm very keen on Klimt.

Pjsandbaileys · 13/03/2020 11:09

Terry Bradley would probably be mine, I like the boldness of the colour and slight abstractness of his paintings.

SerenDippitty · 13/03/2020 11:10

Marc Chagall.

billydilly · 13/03/2020 11:12

Paul Klee for the playfulness and Henri Matisse for the sheer joy

ThatBloodySheepAgain · 13/03/2020 11:14

Another one for Klimt, I love his representation of women but also his forest and tree of life works.
Hundertwasser (great name) as well for the colour and energy and Rodin’s sculptures, the kiss in particular.
Hieronymous Bosch for the intricacy.

Genderwitched · 13/03/2020 11:14

Mine are
Walter Sickert, wonderful insight into Victorian and Edwardian working class life.

Edvard Munch, I've been fascinated by him since I was a child, and

Pierre Bonnard, brilliant colour and composition.

friendineed · 13/03/2020 11:15

Caravaggio and Turner, plus all the pre Raphaelites.

Not keen on modern art at all.

friendineed · 13/03/2020 11:16

And the impressionists of course, Monet, Manet Toulouse Letrec

Branleuse · 13/03/2020 11:17

Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Picasso. Also love Frida Kahlo

Weepingwillows12 · 13/03/2020 11:19

Hmm this is a hard question. At the moment I am enjoying Scott Naismiths work as I love the way he captures a sky and the colours.

berryfull · 13/03/2020 11:35

Kiki smith
Pippalotti rist
Emma Talbot
Anne hardy
Jill magid

Minnie Cunningham at the Old Bedford, by Walter Sickert

To ask - who is your favourite artist and why?
ikeakia · 13/03/2020 12:38

My favourite artist is Leonardo da Vinci, I love the stories that have been made from his artwork.

My favourite painting is Whistlejacket by George Stubbs. I took the DC’s to see it when they were younger and the look on their faces as they tried to take in the hugeness of it. Stunning.

EdinaMonsoon · 13/03/2020 12:39

Rothko. Especially the Seagram Murals.
Also love Dale Chihuly's sculptures. Frothing, fizzing, stunning works.
Lucien Freud.
David Hockney - particularly his paintings of Celia Birtwell. He captures her so beautifully.

I used to love Van Gogh but now I find it too painfully emotional to look at. Even the brighter works.

Genderwitched · 13/03/2020 14:49

Jespers

Paula Rego - she's a under-rated, bad ass, genius of a painter.

My daughter has just been to visit the Paula Rego museum just outside of Lisbon, she was overwhelmed with it, and she said that the building was a work of art in itself!

Sarahlou252 · 13/03/2020 14:49

@joker123 I have The Lace Tree and Wendy. If I ever get the chance I would love either Red Riding Hood or Rose Red & Snow White - absolutely stunning. I love a Celtic Twilight too, there's just so much on it. A lot of her work takes me back to my Enid Blyton childhood, I think that's why I like her!

FuzzyPuffling · 13/03/2020 14:52

Elisabeth Vigee Lebrun.

Her self portraits are so lively and immediate and I can almost imagine being her friend! Especially as they are so very different from the "fashionable" style of the time.

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 13/03/2020 14:52

I know absolutely nothing at all about art, however I adore Fabian Perez. They just provoke a very real and emotional reaction from me. There are some that I feel like encapsulate an entire mood or feeling, for example his flamenco works, they say everything about how I feel, eyes closed, dancing. I find it difficult to put it into words but his work produces a visual explanation that I can put myself into.
