To feel pissed off with tailgating drivers!

Hi,

I’ve never been a person who goes above the speed limits when driving, obviously I’ve had a few moments were I’ve unintentionally gone over without realising but I’m not an intentional and persistent speeder.

Anyway, nearly everyday, I’m tailgated. More so in 30mph zones. I can’t stand it. I just can’t Understand why they feel I’m not going fast enough if I’m driving right at 30 in a 30. It really annoys me so much.

I try not to allow it to intimidate me but it really does. On my way home from work I was doing 55 on a 60mph road and was tailgated the whole way. When I got to the end of the road, I had to stop because it was a junction, and I looked in my mirror and I saw the driver staring at me and he flapped his arms up in the air as if I had been too slow which obviously I wasn’t. I got pissed off and pulled the fingers at him. He then flashed his lights at me (aggressively)

Just needed a rant I guess!

Well you were going a tad slow, but there was no need for him to keep tailgating you.

Mind you I get a bit pissed off, if people go 10mph under the speed limit.

mouldyoldonkey · 12/03/2020 17:54

It is very annoying. 55 in a 60 is perfectly reasonable, especially when you are being tailgated as you need to compensate for the reduction in distance between your two cars. If you had to stop suddenly at 60mph in front of a tailgater, results could be disastrous.

@vodkaredbullgirl how is 55 in a 60 slow in any way? Speed limits are a limit, not a target

Use your window spraying thingy to clean your front screen. It splashes their window too and most find that annoying.

opticaldelusion · 12/03/2020 17:57

I hate it too. Just don't look in your rear view.

^ This.

Because pretty much every speedo over-reads by about 10%, so your 55 is actually more like 50. And if the roads are clear and conditions good, you should be able to maintain the maximum. If you can't safely manage that, then you need ti look closer to home.

BigGee · 12/03/2020 18:01

I was tailgated in town today by a big mercedes wankermobile. Its amazing how difficult my wee polo becomes to keep at a steady speed when this happens. Its almost like my foot lifts off the accelerator or something....I was doing 30 in a 30. Till my foot slipped. The poor love must have come close to bursting blood vessels, he was so furious by the time we went our separate ways at a junction.

dontdisturbmenow · 12/03/2020 18:03

Who knows, although if it happens often, there might be a reason. Some people drive to the speed limit, which is fine, but will use their break all the time, as soon as the road turns a bit, or a car appears on a side road, or they see a bird flying by or whatever else. It is so utterly frustrating to drive behind such a driver.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 12/03/2020 18:03

You need to adjust it so it clears your windscreen properly because if it's splashing someone else's it's not fully effective.

Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 18:03

@BigGee omg it’s people in the fancy expensive cars that are the worst for tailgating. It’s as if they think they are superior because they have flash cars

DontTouchTheMoustache · 12/03/2020 18:04

I hate it op, i get it alot on the many country roads where i live as they are very bendy and i dont go above 40. Ive seen alot of accidents around here and its just not worth the risk for the few minutes saved.
It used to intimidate me but i dont let it anymore

Alsohuman · 12/03/2020 18:04

If anyone tailgates me I just slow down. Wankers.

Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 18:04

@BuzzShitbagBobbly maybe if the road is completely straight without bumps, hills and bends.

The road I am talking about has hills and bends so I don’t think driving at 60 is appropriate. I think 50 is fine tbh.

And I slow down to 40 when I take the bends

I get this all the time too, I always drive up to the speed limit as well. The other day I was doing 40 (in a 40) busy A road in a residential area, single carriageway, double white lines so no overtaking and someone was sitting right on my bumper and kept swerving out as if to try and overtake, despite constant oncoming traffic. Was fucking terrified. I just turn my rear view mirror sideways so I can't see usually.

boredboredboredboredbored · 12/03/2020 18:06

I had one yesterday, I was doing 40mph on a 40mph road. He came right up my arse and ended up undertaking me in the bus lane then did the wanker gesture to me. I caught him up at the island and he continued to gesticulate like the cock he is....he then zoomed off did a u-turn, would down his window and did the wanker gesture to me again. My crime? Doing 40mph, I didn't give him the satisfaction of retaliating. What a prick!

MimiLaRue · 12/03/2020 18:08

But weather hasn't been clear with good driving conditions- its been bucketing down, with flooding in many parts and poor visibility. Its sensible not to drive full speed in those conditions - its flat out dangerous to be speeding on wet roads

Shopkinsdoll · 12/03/2020 18:09

Can’t stand theses angry aggressive twats on the road. I had one last week on a small town road, built up area. 30 ml. He overtook me, then speeding overtook the next driver in front. Got to the traffic lights and he was stuck in the next lane. I know I know I looked at him and started laughing. I know I shouldn’t have but it felt good lol.

Whenisithometime · 12/03/2020 18:10

@islandislandisland I so hate that - it really scares me when they start weaving in and out. One actually tried to overtake me on a bend - completely oblivious to the fact that there could have been oncoming traffic on the other side of the bend - could have been a serious head on collision

OP posts:
BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/03/2020 18:10

maybe if the road is completely straight without bumps, hills and bends.

Are you saying you will only drive above 50mph on a completely straight, flat road with no bumps or bends or anything? But other people clearly manage to drive safely on that road/any other NSL road at higher speeds? Tbh that doesn't make you sound great.

(To be clear, I'm not saying I agree with tailgating at all, I think it's a dick move. But your own actions will undoubtedly be highly irritating to many others based on above)

MimiLaRue · 12/03/2020 18:11

I know I know I looked at him and started laughing. I know I shouldn’t have but it felt good lol

Yes! Ive done this before- its so unbelievably stupid- overtaking dangerously and aggressively, only to end up next to them at the next traffic lights. Stupid twats. Have you noticed when you smirk at them they always look studiously away? as if something on their dashboard is absolutely fascinating lol

Somanysocks · 12/03/2020 18:11

The problem is people who do this overestimate their driving abilities, and underestimate stopping distances.

When it happens to me I slow down so they either get the message or overtake. If you put you hand up to your rearview mirror as if you are adjusting it they quite often pull back, I find.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 12/03/2020 18:12

*The road I am talking about has hills and bends so I don’t think driving at 60 is appropriate. I think 50 is fine tbh.

And other people think 60 is fine. Including the people who decide on speed limits. So you can't get upset at people being frustrated with you when you're clearly being over-cautious.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/03/2020 18:13

I will probably get flamed for this but. You were going slow, though to him. Maybe pull over next time if you dont want someone up your arse.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/03/2020 18:13

OP hasn't mentioned any mitigating weather or driving conditions though, so that's just a huge assumption to make. And in fact it's been clear, sunny and dry here all day, which could could well have applied on her drive too.
