Wibu to get rid of the sodding cat?

I have recently moved into a place that is my first place all to myself. Bf stays over often but hasn't officially moved in.

First night of being here a cat showed up, howling outside the door. The landlady (who lives on the same site) knows all the local cats from the neighbours and says it isn't a local cat so she believed it may have been dumped by someone out of the area.

Weather was absolutely foul that night so Bf who loves cats decided to let the cat in and she's kind of stayed ever since.

Trouble is, the cat is an asshole and a huge pain in the arse. She can be quite cute but so far since being here she has:

Peed and shat on my brand new mattress, after only having it a week

Ruined 2 brand new king size duvets, a duvet cover, sheet and a blanket by peeing on them

Ruined the new carpet by clawing at it constantly

Clawed the blow up mattress I had before buying my new one, popping it and destroying it

Clawed the borrowed sofa of the landlady's

We have bought her a scratching post and she refuses to use it. I hate litter trays and there is no cat flap but we've been letting her out regularly and she still is toileting on my bed. I can't take anymore. I can't afford to keep replacing stuff she's ruining and I never wanted the bloody cat in the first place but given the weather was so stormy and awful I felt like a horrible bitch if I didn't let her in. I don't want the responsibility of looking after her. Bf seems upset at the prospect of kicking her out but what do I do?!

I refused to get a litter tray until now because I hate the idea of having a box of shit and piss lying around inside the house, they stink and usually aren't emptied regularly, and I know if I don't do it Bf probably won't do it. He says he will but since moving in I have bought all the food and 'stuff' for her (bowls, scratching post, bed etc), done all the feeding and scrubbing her pee and poo out of my stuff. I've had enough and really want nothing more to do with it.

Wibu to kick the cat out? Or should I say that she can stay but only provided I wash my hands of ALL of her care and Bf takes over everything?

Quite a lot of cats have been lost in the recent storms. People also steal and dump them, or steal them and they escape, or they get into vans and run off.

There is currently one missing in Kent that got into a van and then out again somewhere along the way and people are searching all over the place for her. You may have that cat.

JorisBonson · 12/03/2020 15:16

YANBU by responsibly rehoming a cat you don't want.

YABU not giving that poor cat a litter tray

Halloweenbabyy · 12/03/2020 15:16

It’s all anxiety realised for her. Get some Feliway and calming tablets for her.

FairyBatman · 12/03/2020 15:16

You should absolutely just kick it out. It’s probably one of your neighbours indoor cats that’s stressed to hell because you are keeping her prisoner (from her perspective of course)

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 12/03/2020 15:18

She's been here for weeks and only just started doing the toilet stuff, all the other things she's been doing since she arrived

Presumably you haven’t had her neutered. If this has just started is she in heat? Pregnant already?

Itwasntme1 · 12/03/2020 15:19

You don’t want a cat, and you don’t sound like an animal person.

Please take the cat to a shelter. Someone might be missing it, and if not hopefully they can find a good home for it.

Mistystar99 · 12/03/2020 15:22

Kick cat out.
Problem solved!

SudokuQueen · 12/03/2020 15:22

You have a cat in the house with no litter tray and wonder why it’s shitting and pissing everywhere

My thinking exactly. It's amazing how many people don't have common sense these days.

It's easy to keep a litter tray from smelling. Clean it out regularly! Hmm

But yeah get the cats protection league out. Cat needs a better owner.

1forAll74 · 12/03/2020 15:22

Take the cat to the local rescue centre. She probably doesn't like living with you anyway, cats can pick up on a persons annoyance with them. You really should have tried a litter tray, even for a short time, until you take her elsewhere, they soon get used to a tray after a short while.

If you are going away soon, it would be best to take her to a rescue place, and not leave her outside etc.

Sorry for all my blurb, I have three cats, and cats need everything perfect !!

Furries · 12/03/2020 15:24

Actually, sorry, but the more I read your posts, the more I don’t actually think there is a flipping cat in the first place - it’s always “a dark, wet, stormy night” followed by increasingly stupid excuses as to why the animal can’t be looked after properly - all designed to make those who love animals get riled up.

Yeah, I know I should report, but I’d rather a post like this stays up to show either a) how people try to wind others up or b) how blooming dense people like you are when it comes to a situation like this.

BrigidSt · 12/03/2020 15:25

As has been said already I think you're creating all your own problems, rejecting all possible solutions. Ring a cat rescue place to collect, explain your circumstances, never do anything like this again, own your mistakes.

HedgehogDramas · 12/03/2020 15:26

Did you move into your new flat with a removal lorry? If so could the cat have jumped into the lorry and arrived at yours that way? Either way please somehow get the cat checked for a microchip. There is probably a devastated family looking for their cat. You don't want the cat so do the right thing and sort it out ASAP. It's not difficult.

Ruby8719 · 12/03/2020 15:30

@Lemononachair appreciate you tried to help but the way you are talking about her is disgraceful. Clearly not the right home for the poor soul. Get her to an animal shelter ASAP so she can be cared for by someone who knows what they’re doing.

Ruddle91 · 12/03/2020 15:32

You don't need a "cat carrier", a large cardboard box with some air holes cut in, a plastic storage box with a sheet over the top tied on to prevent escape will allow the cat to breathe and fine if a short journey. There are options, not ideal but 🤷🏻‍♀️. I've been involved in emergency rescue of a back yard breeder with 500 Guineas pigs and we used folding stacking crates as they fitted the most animals in each car "safely".

If you don't want the cat don't keep it. It wasn't yours you didn't buy it and have buyers regret. Cats are naughty by nature (I like cats I just won't live with one) you either find it cute or it pisses you off - you sound like the latter.

Lemononachair · 12/03/2020 15:33

She's a cat! I'm pretty sure she doesn't care what I say about her 😆 Not that I say mean things to her face anyway but you get what I mean. Don't worry, the cat is going as soon as I can find something suitable.

HedgehogDramas · 12/03/2020 15:36

Our local Vet loans out carriers. Maybe a vet local to you will do the same.

Blobby10 · 12/03/2020 15:36

@Lemononachair I have to restrict my now elderly cat to the kitchen/dining room these days as she will poo/wee/vomit in other areas of the house if she is even slightly unsettled. Being unsettled can be caused by me being home an hour later than normal ! She has a litter tray but it really doesn't smell - I use wood pellets - although she doesn't use it much. Could you restrict your cat to one room for the time being to save the rest of your belongings?

Throckmorton · 12/03/2020 15:40

This could be someone's beloved pet that has got lost and can't find its way home - please take it to a vet or a shelter ASAP to get it checked for a microchip.

slipperywhensparticus · 12/03/2020 15:40

So you stole someone's cat and now your moaning 🙇‍♀️

Grumpos · 12/03/2020 15:41

Good luck trying to get a shelter to take her. They are inundated.
If you do think you’ll want to take her to a shelter I would start looking into it now, so if they say they have a wait list of a few months you will have something lined up because it’s not a case of just walking in and handing the cat over. At least the region where I live I tried over 20 charities and shelters and that’s no exaggeration.

Waspnest · 12/03/2020 15:42

I don't think YABU to want to get rid of the cat, you didn't choose to have it and I agree with others, contact a rescue centre, they'll tell you the logistics of handing it in BUT I think you ABVU for allowing your BF to put you in this position. Can he not see how much it's pissing you off? The whole losing interest in the cat stuff makes him sound about 12yo.

Grumpos · 12/03/2020 15:43

But good point about advertising it as lost or taking it for a microchip check! It could simply be lost. Did you see the story last week about a cat reunited after 11 YEARS missing Shock

Zombiemum1946 · 12/03/2020 15:44

Ynbu, just call a shelter. You didn't choose the cat, it moved in. One of my cats moved in with a neighbour after I got pregnant, he just meowed to get out and didn't come back. The cat may also be stressed. The other solution is to look in to how to deal with the behaviour.

81Byerley · 12/03/2020 15:48

Phone cats protection. They have volunteers who will probably collect her. If it upsets your boyfriend, tough! I love cats, but I wouldn't have one in your circumstances. I understand how you feel about litter trays, too. I hate them!

Beautiful3 · 12/03/2020 15:50

Take her to a cat rescue centre. Explain shes a stray and that you cannot keep her.
