Tomatoes in cottage pie!?

AIBU to think tomatoes dont go in cottage pie? I was horrified when my BF wanted to make cottage pie like bolognese.
Happened to mention it in my small workplace of 7 and 3 of us make it with gravy and 3 of us make it like bolognese! (1 didnt know how to make cottage pie)

This is madness right? I clarified that they make both sauces exactly the same for bolognese and cottage pie and my mind is blown.

Insanity

I put tomato purée in my cottage pie

schafernaker · 10/03/2020 20:22

I put in a tin of tomatoes and gravy granules- revolutionary

Ajahd · 10/03/2020 20:22

I put a tin of tomatoes in with mine. Worcester sauce, and a beef stock cube. Used to just make it with gravy, then saw a recipe using tomatoes and it was so nice. Bit of grated beetroot on the side (not pickled). I know what I'm having for tea tomorrow

AdoptAdaptImprove · 10/03/2020 20:23

Oh dear, no. I put a bit of tomato purée in mine, but it’s definitely nothing like a tomatoey bolognese sauce.

RobinsEggBlue · 10/03/2020 20:24

My husband put a tin of tomatoes in a cottage pie once....it did not taste good!

Leeds2 · 10/03/2020 20:24

I put in a tin of Campbell's condensed tomato soup (without the water).

Digitalash · 10/03/2020 20:24

Tomato puree I can see but actual tomatoes?! Madness.

Yep tin of tomatoes in with the gravy and sliced tomatoes dotted around on top of the mash. Mash needs to be roughed up a bit too so it gets the crispy peaks.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 10/03/2020 20:24

It's definitely not a Bolognese but I do put tomatoes in, as per pp

CosmicVagina · 10/03/2020 20:24

Tomato in cottage pie is horrible.

Goingunderground2 · 10/03/2020 20:26

Sliced tomato on top with cheese and grilled.

BIL puts pickled onions. We decline that offer for going round for tea!! All sorts off wrong!!

ClubfootMaestro · 10/03/2020 20:26

Big fan of the cottage pie threads tonight! The kind of content I come to Mumsnet for.
YANBU. No tomato and lots of gravy!

ratspeaker · 10/03/2020 20:27

I make a version of cottage pie with tin of tomatoes, some purée, harissa paste and then topped with garlic mash.
( for me I make it lentil based for others with beef)

TheQueens · 10/03/2020 20:28

Tomato? Nope! Totally wrong! Especially sliced ones on the top of the mash 😷 (although I'm sure you are a lovely person otherwise 😆)

SquigglePigs · 10/03/2020 20:29

I put some tomato puree in but that's it. Can't imagine it with lots of tinned tomatoes!

MadameMeursault · 10/03/2020 20:29

Tomato purée, stock and red wine 😊

HeresMe · 10/03/2020 20:29

I'm with you OP it's mince and a few spices add carrots and peas but not bloody fruit.

Worcester sauce nah. Henderson's yes please.

PickleThePenguin · 10/03/2020 20:29

I would put tomatoes in a cottage pie.

opticaldelusion · 10/03/2020 20:29

Wrong.

Oakmaiden · 10/03/2020 20:30

I make it like a bolognese.

What can I say. I like bolognese.

SebastienCrabSauce · 10/03/2020 20:31

Only psychopaths put tomatoes in cottage pie

cobwebfew · 10/03/2020 20:31

Did it once, following a recipe I found ok the internet. It was edible but definitely wasn't cottage pie. Stick to my gravy for now on.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/03/2020 20:33

No, no, no and absolutely not.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 10/03/2020 20:34

@TheQueens don't knock it till you try it 🤣

My mums recipe though so you love what you grow up with. She also used to occasionally smoosh a pack of ready salted crisps to crumbs and put them on top of a concoction of chicken and veg with mushroom or chicken soup and mash potato topping.
