Tomatoes in cottage pie!?

AIBU to think tomatoes dont go in cottage pie? I was horrified when my BF wanted to make cottage pie like bolognese.
Happened to mention it in my small workplace of 7 and 3 of us make it with gravy and 3 of us make it like bolognese! (1 didnt know how to make cottage pie)

This is madness right? I clarified that they make both sauces exactly the same for bolognese and cottage pie and my mind is blown.

No! Never! Unless we reach an end of the world scenario and more or less anything can go in. But then I wouldn't call it cottage pie, I'd call it Armageddon pie.

LesLavandes · 10/03/2020 20:35

No tomatoes

8feet12paws2fins · 10/03/2020 20:35

I’ve always made cottage pie with gravy (plenty of thick gravy - I don’t like dry mince cottage pies!).....UNTIL I went to a service users house once (HCA) and they had a cottage pie that the daughter had made and the mash was slightly orange and I saw tomatoes! Genuinely had no idea that people even did that! I went home and made a tomato based cottage pie from a Tesco recipe and I’ve never had it with gravy since! I love it - even better served in a giant Yorkshire pudding Wink

turnthebiglightoff · 10/03/2020 20:37

I would have said god no a month ago. Then one day I put them in by accident and it was absolutely delicious. Best "whatever" pie I've ever had!

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/03/2020 20:37

@Goingunderground2
Pickled onions?
That's all kinds of wrong.
Kill him immediately.

Digitalash · 10/03/2020 20:37

BumbleBeee69 · 10/03/2020 20:45

omg first coronavirus now tomotoes in cottage pie ?! WHAT NEXT FFS 😱

swapsicles · 10/03/2020 20:53

I occasionally make cottage pie with baked beans! Literally mince and beans, simple but tastes pretty good, not sure I could call it cottage pie though 😁

mumwon · 10/03/2020 20:55

no toms but cumin coriander maybe a dash garlic & herbs & some peas may be carrots & mushrooms with gravy & dh likes strong pickled onions on side …

LakieLady · 10/03/2020 20:58

Tomatoes in a cottage pie is just wrong. It's cottage pie, ffs, not patata bolognese.

I don't add gravy to mine, but it's plenty moist anyway and I don't like it runny. Gravy goes in a jug, to be added according to taste.

x2boys · 10/03/2020 21:00

It's can't imagine it would taste good ,however there was a thread a few months ago about cottage pie and it went on for pages and pages ,some arguing you need to boil the mince and cook it for hours and some saying dry fry the mince ,who.knew cottage pie was so interesting.

Digitalash · 10/03/2020 21:02

swapsicles that is not cottage pie Shock

How about people make food the way they like and other people don't comment on it?

IceniSky · 10/03/2020 21:05

What goes in a gravy one? I only ever do a tomato based one as im veggie but wonder if I can replicate a gravy one.

dementedma · 10/03/2020 21:07

It’s bolognese with mash on. No?

yorkshireteaspoonie · 10/03/2020 21:07

Tomato purée = yes
Tinned tomatoes = god no
Tomato slices on Top = heinous crime 🤢

NoParticularPattern · 10/03/2020 21:09

I make it with tinned tomatoes. It’s not a Bolognese but the steps are similar ish I guess? Cottage pie would be chopped onions, carrots, celery and mushrooms. Soften. Add mince. Brown. Sprinkle of flour to soak up any fat. Tomato purée, tinned toms, beef stock cube. Then add onion salt, celery salt, Worcester sauce. Add frozen peas, top with mash. Bolognese would involve grating the carrot and adding A LOT of garlic/herbs. And no potato obviously.

HaggisTheGreat · 10/03/2020 21:09

Cottage pie served in a giant Yorkshire pudding? Mind blown!

Hahaha88 · 10/03/2020 21:12

Well if it's exactly the same way they make bolegnaise it's clearly just bolegnaise with mash!! It's only cottage pie if it's gravyesq. And it has to be lots of cheese on, no
sliced tomatoes yuk.
A bit of tomato puree in it is ok but that's it.
Actually dying at @slashlover taking offense at people criticising other people's recipes like it's a criticism based on race or religion or something actually important and wrong.

GinnyWeasleysQuiff · 10/03/2020 21:16

A little bit of Tom purée but that's it !

fridgegrazer · 10/03/2020 21:17

How about people make food the way they like and other people don't comment on it?

Well where's the fun in that?

Tomatoes in cottage pie are an abomination - just no. Fresh cottages only

QuantamBaby · 10/03/2020 21:19

What are we, savages???
