Tomatoes in cottage pie!?

AIBU to think tomatoes dont go in cottage pie? I was horrified when my BF wanted to make cottage pie like bolognese.
Happened to mention it in my small workplace of 7 and 3 of us make it with gravy and 3 of us make it like bolognese! (1 didnt know how to make cottage pie)

This is madness right? I clarified that they make both sauces exactly the same for bolognese and cottage pie and my mind is blown.

I have been known to make a chilli con carne style cottage pie.

I'll.say again you don't put fruit on a cottage pie and tomatoes are a fruit.

I put in tinned tomatoes and baked beans, my husband refuses both in his, so we make two cottage pies according to our own family recipes....

Actually dying at @slashlover taking offense at people criticising other people's recipes like it's a criticism based on race or religion or something actually important and wrong.

No tomatoes - but I do put a dollop of branstons pickle in!

Passatta & stock here. Also lentils to thicken it up. I sort of make it up with whatever I can find at the time

No. I usually use a tablespoon of puree if I have it. That’s it.

Lol I put drained chopped tomatoes in mine. Always a fave at our dinner table too kids love it too! Guess one shoe does not fit everyone!

I can understand baking bolognaise with mash on top, contemplates a polenta version but it’s not a cottage pie. It’s like DH makes a gorgeous spiced shepherd’s pie - and we don’t call it “shepherd’s pie”, because it’s something totally different.

If it annoys you just don't read thread's like this. Based on the amount of people commenting on these threads, others clearly like them. And so far you're alone in complaining about them

My uni mates put baked beans in cottage pie and added cheese on top.

People are weird. You don’t add tomatoes to a cottage pie. I know someone who adds a tin of beans. He says his mum did it, so that’s how he likes it

Always made it like spag bol here. I find the 'other' version grim.

I put half a tin of chopped tomatoes in, with a beef stock cube, carrots & peas. So enough to have a bit of tomatoey-ness but without giving it the consistency of a sauce. I prefer it to just using stock as it's tastier!

No need for tomatoes in a cottage pie....

Not tomatoes, but Delia’s cottage pie recipe has a tablespoon of tomato purée in it. And some cinnamon. It’s really good.
