‘Tricked’ by vegan sausages

Rhubarbpeony · 10/03/2020 10:32

I had a friend round for dinner last night. It was a last minute plan (she lives in another city and only told me on the day that she was free that evening) so I didn’t make anything fancy. I had in the fridge a packet of Richmond vegan sausages and some potatoes, which I turned into olive oil mash. I’ve been vegan for about ten years - longer than the entire time I have known this friend. We have cooked for each other many times in the past.

As we were finishing eating, my husband got home from a late work event and saw that we had had the sausages. It’s not a brand we have tried before and they’re much cheaper than the kind we usually get, so he asked if they had been nice. I said they were good, and I’d happily have them again.

Friend gets a really odd look on her face and then says to me ‘you didn’t tell me these were vegan sausages.’ I said no, I assumed she would know that anything I cooked or ate would be vegan. She said I was wrong to assume, and that I had tricked her. She said it would be like me coming to dinner at her house and being tricked into eating a meat sausage.

AIBU or are these two things not the same?! For one thing, I definitely don’t feel like I tricked her - she saw me cook the sausages, and if she had asked anything about them I would have told her what was in them. For another, her diet doesn’t preclude her from eating vegan items, but mine does preclude me from eating meat, so IMO it’s a lot worse to give a vegan a meat sausage than it is to give a non-vegan a vegan sausage.

(for info: the sausages don’t contain any soy, and she doesn’t have any food allergies)

Has she got a food allergy or something to vegan alternatives? If not ,yes she is being weird x

angelfacecuti75 · 11/03/2020 19:24

And olive oil mashed potatoes sounds amazing x

LittleMissMe99 · 11/03/2020 19:39

Your friend is nuts. It's not the same at all

Chocolateislife88 · 11/03/2020 19:56

Baffled by this.
You're right, you cannot compare the two!
She knows you're a vegan, she saw that you were eating the sausages too.
To accuse you of tricking her is such a weird thing to do. If she ate them, she clearly enjoyed them. Couldn't she just of been grateful for the meal Hmm
Seems very stange, perhaps she has something else going on? Either way you have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about.

Holdencaulfieldshomeboy · 11/03/2020 20:06

She's very probably annoyed she liked vegan sausages so she's taking it out on you. She's an idiot thinking you tricked her and its definitely absolutely not like you as a vegan eating meat sausages. What a loon!

AndNowItsHappeningInMine · 11/03/2020 20:36

Did she also complain about the vegan mash?
She's a bell.

Tubs11 · 11/03/2020 21:08

@Rhubarbpeony thanks a million, I'm totally making this at the weekend!

Justdontdoit · 11/03/2020 21:38

Your friend is being utterly ridiculous

Lily019 · 12/03/2020 01:53

My daughter, now 20, has been vegan/veggie since age 15. I would never expect her to make me a meal consisting of meat or meat products because she doesn't want this. I visit her now,she offers or I'll bring some veggie/pasta/cous cous / rice options and we have a nice meal, there really is no need for drama. Food is food. Your friend needs to grow up. Vegans and Veggies are not aliens, they just choose a different menu. Where is the harm, even for one day, even if it's not your preferred option?

LovelyIssues · 12/03/2020 10:23

Your friend is being odd. I would just be grateful my lovely friend had made me a lovely meal Grin

ralfeesmum · 12/03/2020 11:10

"tricked?"

She seems to have issues and one of them is attention-seeking......

(God forbid she may have eaten 'meaty' sausages when the Irish horsemeat scandal was doing the rounds!)

glennamy · 12/03/2020 14:51

Not the same whatsoever...

I love my meat & fish but also have the odd day meat-free just for a change!

She enjoyed them and needs to get over it...

I would have remarked with surprise they tasted great being vegan/meat-free!

Is she a negative Nellie?

Hally2020 · 12/03/2020 15:17

She is totally being unreasonable!!! I haven't eaten meat for 40yrs and tried these for the first time a few weeks back, they are bloody gorgeous and the best around!!!! I think she's being an arse because she actually enjoyed them!!!

pam290358 · 12/03/2020 15:30

If they are Richmond vegan they’re TVP not soya. I’m not veggie and I really like them - bought them by mistake once and was converted. Much better for you too !!

BennyVegas · 12/03/2020 15:45

If they are Richmond vegan they’re TVP not soya.

What do you think TVP is made from?

Dieu · 12/03/2020 15:47

She's nuts Grin
YANBU.

FairfaxAikman · 12/03/2020 17:31

I like to know what I'm eating and would expect a non-vegan friend to mention if they were using vegan sausages but that said as you're a vegan I'd think it safe to assume that if you are cooking and eating them then they would definitely be vegan.

Stolengoat · 15/03/2020 07:19

I think people get really hacked off, there are alot of vegans who preach to people and look down on non vegans. There was a lady I worked with a few years ago who used to corner you in the canteen and tell you how bad your food was for the planet. Since I've been vegan, I do feel that people are on guard, waiting for me to try and convert them.

pam290358 · 15/03/2020 07:49

@BennyVegas. I’m not veggie myself but have a vegan friend who says there is a difference between ordinary soya based products and TVP. Some people have adverse reactions to soya, my friend included but she says that although TVP is soya based it’s refined and lots of people who ordinarily have problems with soya can eat TVP, herself included, with no problem. Not an expert and don’t know how true this is, but that’s my understanding of it.

DFAMA · 15/03/2020 09:22

The Richmond meat free sausages are bloody lovely! Easily the best vegan sausages you can get. Your friend is an idiot

AsCoolAsLangCleg · 15/03/2020 09:33

Was she worried they're made from actual vegans?

Hally2020 · 15/03/2020 12:34

@AsCoolAsLangCleg Omg!!! I never thought I was cooking and enjoying vegans, can't stop now they're too nice 😂😂😂

DishingOutDone · 15/03/2020 22:13

You cant get Richmond vegan sausages or stuff like that for love nor money now. Rarer than toilet rolls.
