‘Tricked’ by vegan sausages

I had a friend round for dinner last night. It was a last minute plan (she lives in another city and only told me on the day that she was free that evening) so I didn’t make anything fancy. I had in the fridge a packet of Richmond vegan sausages and some potatoes, which I turned into olive oil mash. I’ve been vegan for about ten years - longer than the entire time I have known this friend. We have cooked for each other many times in the past.

As we were finishing eating, my husband got home from a late work event and saw that we had had the sausages. It’s not a brand we have tried before and they’re much cheaper than the kind we usually get, so he asked if they had been nice. I said they were good, and I’d happily have them again.

Friend gets a really odd look on her face and then says to me ‘you didn’t tell me these were vegan sausages.’ I said no, I assumed she would know that anything I cooked or ate would be vegan. She said I was wrong to assume, and that I had tricked her. She said it would be like me coming to dinner at her house and being tricked into eating a meat sausage.

AIBU or are these two things not the same?! For one thing, I definitely don’t feel like I tricked her - she saw me cook the sausages, and if she had asked anything about them I would have told her what was in them. For another, her diet doesn’t preclude her from eating vegan items, but mine does preclude me from eating meat, so IMO it’s a lot worse to give a vegan a meat sausage than it is to give a non-vegan a vegan sausage.

(for info: the sausages don’t contain any soy, and she doesn’t have any food allergies)

I'd have checked with you before eating them as many meat subs give me a horrible reaction.

Shinycat · 10/03/2020 21:26

@deydododatdodontdeydo

How unpleasant.
Are you normally annoyed by things that don't affect you whatsoever?

If you could be arsed to read the full thread, you would see that I have actually posted several times earlier on in the thread.

I AM affected by it, when I have to make vegan food especially for the precious little flowers, and get soy milk in, and waste my time making several different types of food because of the little fusspots and their 'fad.'

And then when I go to THEIR house, they can't be arsed to even get any fecking normal milk in, so I have to have my coffee black, as well as eating all their tasteless vegan muck.

And so NOW, I get take-out in when they come, because I can't be arsed to cater to them when they can't be arsed to return the favour.. EVER.

I (and DH) have turned down many invitations for a meal at a vegan's house for the past 6 months (apart from Boxing day,) because we can't stomach the insipid crap they serve.

So jog on with your snarky comments. I am as entitled to my opinions as you are. If you don't like them, that's your problem, not mine.

Eckhart · 10/03/2020 21:30

Sounds like you have enough problems of your own, @Shinycat. In fact it sounds quite hard being you.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 10/03/2020 21:31

Calling vegans precious little flowers, and little fusspots with a fad (not to mention the rest of your rant) just goes to prove the previous poster right lol Grin
Triggered by vegans, much?!
I'll never understand the vitriol they get flung their way just for not eating animal products.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 10/03/2020 21:31

Actually you are just rude. That's your problem.

MadameButterface · 10/03/2020 21:35

Have some vegan sriracha mayo for that chip on yr shoulder shiny and get a grip will you 😂

Shinycat · 10/03/2020 21:36

@Eckhart Yes dear.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 10/03/2020 21:36

I find a lot of vegan meat substitutes are heavily processed with additives, salty, or contain things that make me a bit gassy. I wouldn't want to be deliberately tricked into eating them for those reasons. However I would assume a vegan wouldn't cook ordinary sausages.

Shinycat · 10/03/2020 21:37

@MadameButterface I would rather eat my own sick than that crap ta anyway luv. Grin

Eckhart · 10/03/2020 21:37

@wotchatalkinboutwillis I think it's more about the fact that Shinycat has been forced against their will to drink black coffee and eat food they don't like. So now when they invite vegans over, Shinycat orders take away, which sounds really vindictive.

Shinycat, have you discussed these issues with the precious little flowers, or do you just save up your vitriol until it explodes onto some innocent soul's thread on MN?

Shinycat · 10/03/2020 21:39

@WotchaTalkinBoutWillis

You could say I HAVE been triggered by vegans yep. They cause my rage.

Coz I am sick of them, and their entitled preciousness.

And I am entitled to air my views on here about them.

Slag me off for it all you like. I really don't give a fuck. Smile

I don't know any of you on here. Why the hell would I care what you say or think?

You CLEARLY care a lot about what I am saying though. Grin

NeverGotMyPuppy · 10/03/2020 21:40

MN is full of nutters. Seriously.

Rhubarbpeony · 10/03/2020 21:45

Sounds like your friend is just a bad cook, @Shinycat! When garlic, chilli, basil, lemon, chives, sage, garam masala, ginger, peanuts, soy sauce, maple syrup, lime, coriander, mangoes, coconut, lemongrass, tahini, sundried tomatoes, dill, fresh peas, balsamic vinegar, raspberries, vanilla, treacle, sriracha, onions, curry powder, olives, nuts, rosemary, cinnamon and countless others are all vegan there’s no excuse for ‘tasteless vegan muck’.

OP posts:
LittleSweet · 10/03/2020 21:46

I'd be upset as I'm allergic to soya. But I'm not sure why your friend is upset.

MusicTeacherSussex · 10/03/2020 21:48

Exactly which ingredient is it that she cannot eat for health or ethical reasons? FYI I am a total carnivore, but that doesn't mean I don't, can't or won't eat vegan alternatives. Sometimes they are nicer...

Yanbu.

Eckhart · 10/03/2020 21:49

Shinycat, you are assuming we care about your comments because we're commenting on them, but you are reciprocating, so your logic has let you down a bit there. I'm glad you feel you've won though. Sounds like you need a bit of happiness to get you through this trauma of having vegans around.

Assuming you won't be responding to this, otherwise you'll be demonstrating that you do, in fact, care.

JustOneMoreStep · 10/03/2020 22:07

I think that the issue isn't really about either of you being unreasonable really, but just a lack of communication. As a meat eater, if I saw you cooking sausages it wouldn't occur to me that they would not be meat, and I must admit to being bemused at the concept that non meat alternatives are being created to mimic meat and create meat products with them but that's a side issue. I can similarly understand that as you were cooking and your friend knows of your vegan lifestyle, it might not occur to you to say 'oh I'm making these vegan sausages, is that ok for you too?'. I can also see the point your friend was making about it being similar to if she 'tricked' you into eating meat. I think 'tricked' is a poor choice of words but I can imagine the same lack of communication happening in reverse. It's not really about what she (as a meat eater) can eat, but she is entitled to choose what she eats in the same way as you are entitled to choose a vegan diet. I'd just chalk it up as on of those miscommunication that happens in life and move on to be honest.

Rhubarbpeony · 10/03/2020 22:14

I must admit to being bemused at the concept that non meat alternatives are being created to mimic meat and create meat products with them but that's a side issue.

I’ve heard it expressed thus:

People eat vegan meat for the same reason people use dildos; looks the same, feels the same, fills a hole, no hearts are broken in the process Grin

If you could be arsed to read the full thread, you would see that I have actually posted several times earlier on in the thread.

I have read the entire thread, and all your posts, and all I see is bile.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 10/03/2020 22:16

And shinycat I think you might be a work colleague I used to have, who constantly went on about "vegan muck".
When anyone pointed out what she was eating was vegan e.g. an oreo, she'd suddenly pull a face and stop eating it.

Reginabambina · 10/03/2020 22:19

I’m pretty sure soy is supposed to be good for women. When I lived abroad I used to buy a really nice soy milk that was marketed for women (can’t remember why buy it tasted great).

Reginabambina · 10/03/2020 22:20

@deydododatdodontdeydo to be fair Oreos are pretty vile. If is wasn’t the hyper processed greasy taste that put her off, whoever told her it was vegan probably did her a huge favour!

Eckhart · 10/03/2020 22:20

People eat vegan meat for the same reason people use dildos; looks the same, feels the same, fills a hole, no hearts are broken in the process

Brilliant!

deydododatdodontdeydo · 10/03/2020 23:00

Reginabambina - no, she was enjoying them, looked at me and said "shame you can't have these".
I said "why not? they're vegan" and that's when she pulled the face.

MadameButterface · 10/03/2020 23:07

In Greggs just before Christmas i stopped for a vegan sausage roll pick me up and got upsold some ‘vegan mince pies’ in a moment of weakness. They were the EXACT SAME MINCE PIES they were upselling to the normal people!! Greggs normal mince pies were vegan!!!! I hope this info hasn’t triggered any vegan hating snowflakes into doing a sick and then eating it
