To enjoy smoking?

I've been trying to quit for a while and I have come to the realisation that I actually just enjoy smoking a lot. It gives me a break from the chaos. Anyone else felt the same way?

OP posts:
trappedsincesundaymorn · 09/03/2020 09:59

I usually get told to stop smoking because it's bad for my health by people that are quite happy to drink to excess most weekends....oh the irony.

Hingeandbracket · 09/03/2020 09:59

YANBU OP and I have never smoked.

CherryPavlova · 09/03/2020 10:01

I don't understand how people can enjoy smelling like an old ashtray, put lives at risk, ruin their skin and burn money. Reduce employment chances too.
A mug of tea gives you a five minute break.

Notso · 09/03/2020 10:06

YANBU I haven't smoked for many years and still really miss it.
If I could smoke without the horrific risk to health I would. Although it does stink and I certainly don't miss that element of it.

AngelicaKauffman · 09/03/2020 10:07

You love it because you're addicted, surely?

I used to smoke and at the time I loved it too. But now that don't smoke, I don't miss it in the slightest.

If it was really about the break from the chaos, you could just go outside for 5 minutes every couple of hours to eat an apple, or read the newspaper, or whatever.

bingbangbing · 09/03/2020 10:07

Allan Carr talks a load of shite.

Read his book too.

😁😁😁😁😁

At all the people coming on here to tell us that smoking is horrible! Think you've missed the point somewhat!

Nearlyalmost50 · 09/03/2020 10:08

If you wait to stop enjoying smoking to quit, you will be waiting a long time!

MouthBreathingRage · 09/03/2020 10:08

New user OP starts a goady thread then disappear when it turns into an inevitable bunfight. What a surprise.

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 09/03/2020 10:09

There are lots of ways to get that 5 minute break in your day, I agree. However, cigarettes are enormously addictive and so it’s only natural that smokers feel that the ritual of certain cigarettes is significant, unique and difficult to replace. Smokers must enjoy it, let’s face it because the health, social and financial facts around smoking aren’t positive at all. There are very few other benefits to smoking, so there must be something enjoyable about it for smokers.

RefuseTheLies · 09/03/2020 10:10

I quit some years ago. I don’t miss it anymore, but I used to love smoking.

Hellodotdotdot · 09/03/2020 10:10

Do you people not realise how much you stink?

I no longer kiss my partner because his breath is rank after smoking.

aWeaponCalledtheWord · 09/03/2020 10:11

i switched to a vape a month ago, been smoking since i was 12, now mid forties.

my smoker’s cough has completely gone, and i was starting to sound like my Nan! obviously the jury is still out on whether vaping is safe, but my local smoking cessation service recommends it and that’s good enough for me.

the vape was £15. i have menthol juice in it and it tastes just like a fag. the plan is to cut down the nicotine content but for now i am happy. i loved smoking but it was beginning to affect my breathing so i’ve made the leap.

BertieBotts · 09/03/2020 10:15

No, I've never been addicted. Could always pick it up and leave it off when I wanted to. Surely people like different things?

I like the taste, it's sort of bitter like coffee. I like the slight rush although that goes after a while. The sensation is nice too. When you do it in the rain or at night the whole contrast of that little glowing ember against the dark/wet/cold is atmospheric. Breathing out smoke is kind of fun like being a dragon. It's not the same to take 5 mins out with an apple or a newspaper. I don't know why, it's just not. I've tried those things and it doesn't work. It's also a social thing - instant excuse to strike up a conversation with a stranger. Going off to find the smoking area. I also always felt it was a bit of a statement of "I'm only human, not perfect, I have flaws". It's a relatively cheap way to enjoy yourself; the cost of 20 cigarettes is much less than 20 drinks.

Wereallsquare · 09/03/2020 10:15

I miss smoking a lot. The breaks, the perfect match for booze and coffee. Kept me slim, too.

But my body could not handle it at all. Quitting took forever and it was a miserable experience and ended up being really costly.

If I could smoke without serious health consequences, I would start again immediately.

BertieBotts · 09/03/2020 10:17

I make coffee in a cafetiere as my ritual now. It hits some of the spot.

IvinghoeBeacon · 09/03/2020 10:17

I’m not a smoker but I get that it must be rewarding, that makes a lot of sense. I don’t really get how there isn’t any other way to get five minutes’ peace though. you must mean specifically “five minutes’ peace with a nicotine hit” because non-smokers do manage to get five minutes’ peace sometimes too

ihaveaquestionplease · 09/03/2020 10:19

Smoking is not lovely. It stinks, it's expensive and it kills you.

My dad died in December from lung cancer. It's a horrific way to die.

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/03/2020 10:19

A mug of tea gives you a five minute break.

No, you obviously don’t understand. I’m an ex-smoker. Very glad I’m no longer a victim of the tyranny but my goodness, how I used to enjoy a cigarette.

BertieBotts · 09/03/2020 10:21

It's not about having 5 mins peace, the nature of it is different. Nothing else forces you to go outside whatever the weather, for one thing. I don't think it is the nicotine hit specifically, although it must play some part in it. It's probably the ritual aspect as someone else said. But I quite frequently used to use smoking breaks to think things through in a way I don't really do at all now.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 09/03/2020 10:21

I gave up 4 years ago and vape now. Slowly reducing the nicotine levels. I enjoy it much more than smoking.
I can breathe properly, haven't had a persistent cough and no chest infections.

Smell of fags turns my stomach now.

IvinghoeBeacon · 09/03/2020 10:24

That’s exactly what I mean though - this “five minutes’ peace” thing must be different to what I understand, because I get that through other ways. Either it’s something I don’t need, or something special that I don’t have access to through not smoking

moondance19 · 09/03/2020 10:26

Before I gave up I thought I’d never enjoy a drink again if I didn’t have the fag to go with it. I totally loved my ciggies, the whole ritual of standing outside for the peaceful smoke. I’d never judge anyone for smoking. I gave up when I was ready, still get the odd hankering but I just shove it out of my mind.

TheGirlWithAPrince · 09/03/2020 10:27

Ex smoker, been a non smoker for 2 years and I miss it, but again don't miss the addiction.. I liked having a smoke when it was nice moments like on a nice sunny day with a cold drink or on the terrace of our local restaurant overlooking the beach... But that's it really

Iooselipssinkships · 09/03/2020 10:28

Oh I loved smoking. I had to quit though as I have two kids who hated it and worried a lot, plus the expense of 20 a day has gone up to £10 and wasn't feasible for us, some days I'd be buying 40. Couldn't afford it. Moved to tobacco for a bit but it just wasn't the same for me and I was sick of finding bits of it everywhere.
I now vape and have a very low amount of nicotine in it. It's nice not to smell and have some extra money, I've noticed a lot of changes. I won't be giving up vaping either (as you're supposed if using as a smoking cessation aid) because I really enjoy it and can even help if I'm craving sweet stuff (trying to lose weight) as I use some cake flavours.

TabbyMumz · 09/03/2020 10:32

Never smoked, I think it's disgusting....the smell on the person, what they look like when smoking, the damage it does to health etc. Sorry to say it but when I find out someone smokes it changes my opinion of them completely...I automatically think they are disgusting and they instantly lose all credibility with me.
