To enjoy smoking?

I've been trying to quit for a while and I have come to the realisation that I actually just enjoy smoking a lot. It gives me a break from the chaos. Anyone else felt the same way?

OP posts:
InOtterNews · 09/03/2020 11:22

I have always loved smoking. It's the reason I've never tried to give up in 20 odd years.

However, I am on day 14 of giving up. I fell off the wagon a couple of times but admonished myself and restarted the next day.

I miss the cup of coffee and fag first thing (breakfast of champions) and I am particularly struggling around 3.30/4pm every day. But I am not finding stopping as hard as I thought I would

Doggybiccys · 09/03/2020 11:26

What @SerenDippitty said. It’s only calming because your body needs it. Same as saying a drink is calming to an alcoholic - only because it stops withdrawal symptoms

EmeraldShamrock · 09/03/2020 11:31

Flowers To the posters who lost someone. As hard as I fought the need to stop I'm glad I did. I couldn't sleep thinking of my DC at my death bed while I struggled to breath, from my addiction.
My DM is on 24 hour oxygen she can't walk due to blocked veins and chronic cpod at 68 her life's over she quit 4 years ago.

lazylinguist · 09/03/2020 11:52

Smoking is cool and sexy. YANBU.

Smoking is grim and smelly. It hasn't been cool and sexy for a long time now.
OP - you can enjoy what you like. It's the addiction that makes it enjoyable though, surely. What on earth would be inherently pleasant about inhaling load of filthy smoke into your lungs? My parents were smokers, which thankfully put me off for life.

squeekums · 09/03/2020 12:02

Yep, i enjoy it OP
i like the 5 min alone
that first one with a hot coffee in the morning
Smoking while drinking cocktails
love it

AngelicaKauffman · 09/03/2020 12:09

I'm surprised anyone would be surprised at this. Shocker as drug addict announces they enjoy taking the drug to which they are addicted!

SuburbanFraggle · 09/03/2020 12:12

What a gamble with your life. Especially if you have children who depend on you. How selfish.

RedRed9 · 09/03/2020 12:14

the oh so smug non-smokers said we should smoke outside. Next time think ahead when making demands that might backfire on you.

The alternate was smokers continuing to smoke indoors everywhere, which is worse. It didn’t backfire, it’s just the lesser of two evils. Still evil, still shit.

Very true, Heroin and crack addicts enjoy their fix too. All addictions are selfish ultimately it is satisfying yourself as an addict. Not judging I have had my self battles.

datasgingercatspot · 09/03/2020 12:19

YANBU. You're an adult. It's legal.

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 09/03/2020 12:20

I am sure it is calming, but it also kills people before their time and in a horrible way.

Recently dated someone who had smoked for 30/40 years and who said he wanted to stop. He couldn’t go more than about 2.5 hours without a fag and was embarrassed by it. He had a lovely face and teeth that would have been lovely if they hadn’t been brown. Our dates didn’t lead to anything, but he was lovely and the thought that he could get seriously ill was not pleasant.

I hope he does manage to stop, but I guess that for a lot of people the addiction is really entrenched and they assume that the worst won’t happen to them.

Honeybee85 · 09/03/2020 12:20

YANBU.

I once heard someone say as we were smoking together: smoking is sooo good, if it wasn’t so expensive and unhealthy then everyone would do it, 24/7. And I agreed with her at that time.

For me it was the perfect way to fight stress and I miss it. But I don’t want to die of lung or throat cancer like 2 relatives of mine who had smoked for a long time.

Rosehip10 · 09/03/2020 12:21

Yabu. Smoking is common.

HunzintheHood · 09/03/2020 12:24

@Rosehip10 hmmm, wonder why B&H used to have the royal seal...

vodkaredbullgirl · 09/03/2020 12:25

Rich people smoke.

HunzintheHood · 09/03/2020 12:27

Also for the smokers - I’ve very recently given up and am happy to report that I can still have the five minute break, a moment to myself etc. I just step outside with a herbal tea instead. Oh and I’ve just booked a mini break with the £1200 I haven’t spent over the past two months.

Do I miss cigarettes - yes, but am enjoying the freedom from it all.

kennyjenny · 09/03/2020 12:27

I have been an ex smoker for 5 years now. I miss it so much. I lived in London and it helped me deal with the anxiety of travelling on the tube. A lot of my work friends smoked and at lunch and break times we would go up to the terrace and look over London while smoking, it was a lot of fun and I have fond memories. I don't need to be told of all the health risks, I know it already hence why I gave up and feel better for it but I do secretly wish I could go back to that time and relive it for a day.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 09/03/2020 12:29

I gave up when I found out I was pregnant. I had started vaping for about a year before. I think vaping must be easier to quit than smoking, I was on such low nicotine. 6 months nicotine free and I still crave the vape.

I hope I dont go back to it, smoking made me really anxious and it fucking stinks so I definitely wouldn't smoke again, I wouldn't want my child around that. But vaping is tempting.

My dad lit up a fag in front of me the other day, no fucks given. Wont be returning to his house either as he refuses to give up smoking to see baby, says I'm overreacting.

EmeraldShamrock · 09/03/2020 12:32

Yabu. Smoking is common You'd be surprised at how many intellectual professional's get hooked at university considering 30 years ago it was odd if they didn't smoke. The staff garden on the hospital's ground was full of butts.

Inextremis · 09/03/2020 12:38

I switched to vaping at the tail end of last year. It was my 4th or 5th attempt - and what changed was that it finally clicked with me that I didn't enjoy smoking, what I enjoyed was the break from the nagging feeling of needing a cigarette (the addiction). I'm - like many others - working down the strength of the nicotine in my vapes, and it's going well. I do not miss smoking at all - I am bloody loving the freedom of not having to do it - sometimes I forget to vape now, too - and it's wonderful.

My husband still smokes, though in the past few days he's started vaping as well, with a view to stopping. Yes, it (and he) stinks, but me nagging him is not going to make him quit any sooner, so I'm not - just insisting he goes outside if he needs a cig, which I think is reasonable.

I am so happy not to be a smoker any more - smoked since I was 12 or 13 (am 60 now) and I would have said I enjoyed it, I suppose, but still hated the feeling of having to do it, of always working out when I could pop out for a cig, of getting twitchy in the cinema if the film went on too long etc. etc. It's expensive too!

I'm not saying the OP and others are wrong to think they enjoy it - they probably do enjoy that bit of relief and 'me' time - but there are other, less dangerous and anti-social ways of taking a break.

Flagg · 09/03/2020 12:39

Smoking in pubs (and cinemas, and trains, and at work) was great. Smoking back in the day when everybody smoked was terrific. I gave up 20 years ago and don't miss it, but I'm glad I smoked when I was young.

Coldemort · 09/03/2020 12:40

The person who mentioned growing up around smokers, I had a friend who's parents both smoked heavily and inside a small 2 bed house. He managed to go through the school years without smoking, then started at university because he missed the smokey living room (and passively addicted I guess).
I'm more or less quit now, what got me was I was a bit worried about my drinking. I read a great quit-lit book (cant remember her name), googled the author and shes successfully quit the booze only to die of lung cancer in her early 40's.
Made me realise that although my drinking wasnt great, the biggest threat to my health was the smoking. Yet you get more shock horror from regular drinking than smoking despite it being far more risky.
Obvs ideally I'll quit both but one battle at a time

Soapytoad · 09/03/2020 12:48

I used to smoke about 20 a day and stopped 15 years ago when I was pg with DS1. It was around the time of the smoking ban so after he was born it totally changed my habits. Definitely for the better! I had never tried to stop before then.

I admit that when I’m pissed enough and out with a smoker friend I do have the occasional one at two. But I always regret it the next morning.

Totally get the enjoyment thing though. Nicotine rush is whet makes it so addictive. It’s like caffeine or alcohol or any drug really.

I’ve also been pissed and tried those e-cig things My god they are weird! I think it’s great there’s an alternative but give me a real fag any day!!!

combatbarbie · 09/03/2020 12:49

I gave up on New Years Day..... I miss it! Specially that first one with a brew before chaos ensues.

Soapytoad · 09/03/2020 12:51

In fact I should add that even though I have no desire to smoke when sober there have been times when I’ve found myself in very stressful situations that I have thought “I could do with a fag right now!”
