To be obsessed with the name Millie?

Hi all,
I absolutely adore the name Millie, but my friend says it sounds like a cow. I even crocheted a rag doll and called it Millie. Also, it must be spelled Millie NOT Milly, the former is really sweet, the latter is just very very middle aged.

Where I'm from (NI) Millie means chav

Grandmi · 08/03/2020 00:45

My doggie was called Millie and went to doggie heaven in August 2019! I miss her so much and still think of her every day!!

nosleepp · 08/03/2020 00:45

My cousin is a Millie, I love it

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 08/03/2020 01:41

Short for Mildred

Ponoka7 · 08/03/2020 03:38

It's become over used where i live, along with Evie, Ava etc.

I like the name Millicent, which means strength and determination. But there are a few names Millie can be short for. I think Millie should be a NN/shortened proper name.

Ponoka7 · 08/03/2020 03:40

I also think the dog/cat/animal thing is irrelevant.

RAOK · 08/03/2020 04:02

Millie’s Cookies is still going!

PixieDustt · 08/03/2020 04:15

All the Millie's I've met have been bitchy.
My DP's 12 year old cousin is called Millie and she is so so sly.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/03/2020 04:50

It's a thoroughly modern name

I'm not sure anyone else got the reference @Dylaninthemovies1

bakedbeanzontoast · 08/03/2020 05:55

Makes me think of stereotypical Waitrose shopper's kids.

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 08/03/2020 05:57

I like it as well. I also like Tilly... I don't think I've ever seen it spelt Tillie though.

CookieSue222 · 08/03/2020 06:23

@Dylaninthemovies1

I got it - but then I'm really old!

Everything today is thoroughly modern ...............

whiteroseredrose · 08/03/2020 06:57

Millie was my grandmother's name. She was wonderful. When she died we found on her birth certificate that she was actually Milly. A nicer spelling IMO. Wonder why she changed it.

Growingboys · 08/03/2020 07:30

I think it's a bland name and a bit drippy.

ememem84 · 08/03/2020 07:51

Catface is called millie.

OneOfTheGrundys · 08/03/2020 07:56

In one class I teach I have:
2 Millies (one y one ie)
2 Tillies (Both y)
3 Lillies (One y, one ie, one hypenated with another name).
It’s confusing!

emilybrontescorsett · 08/03/2020 08:10

It's not my favourite name. A bit nicknamey for me. Dd has a friend who is a Milly/Millie and offer calls her Mildred as a joke.

ChocolateFace · 08/03/2020 08:14

DD is a Milly.

I'm not sure why that spelling is middle aged. Confused

She tells people it's short for Millicent (it isn't). It's short fir something else DS2 couldn't pronounce when she was born. It's not a name I would have chosen as I didn't consider it formal enough. But I wouldn't mess with any of the Millie/Millys I've met.

And I bloody love Millies cookies

friendineed · 08/03/2020 09:23

I love the name Milly. Reminds me of my childhood somehow.

CuriousCapricorn · 08/03/2020 09:26

I’m obsessed with the name Rose Smile

YouJustDoYou · 08/03/2020 09:26

I know 5 Millies, it's a cute and very popular name.

Sootyandsweep2019 · 08/03/2020 10:16

OP you are not being unreasonable, Millie is my middle name and I love it , ( much prefer it to my first name tbf)

Scrumbleton · 09/03/2020 00:04

Negative connotations in Northern Ireland where I grew up - millie was used as a term for common - horrible - I know - derived from the girls who worked in the mills

123Dancewithme · 09/03/2020 00:55

It’s very twee. It was more popular about 10-15 years ago so already feels a bit passé to me.

LolaDarkdestroyer · 09/03/2020 10:45

Get a goldfish or hamster and call it Millie. It just makes me think of the cookies tbf. And it's a boring plain name so strange that you live it that much.
