Hi all,
I absolutely adore the name Millie, but my friend says it sounds like a cow. I even crocheted a rag doll and called it Millie. Also, it must be spelled Millie NOT Milly, the former is really sweet, the latter is just very very middle aged.

It's a weak name. Overused and infantile.

ViciousJackdaw · 07/03/2020 20:37

There's only one Millie as far as I'm concerned and that's James Milner.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/03/2020 20:39

I think it's really twee and wet.

user1471453601 · 07/03/2020 20:42

Cannot blame you. Millie is a legend. Ok some (he) may call him "boring James Milner. I call him legend called Millie

DontCallMeShitley · 07/03/2020 20:45

Do you watch Emmerdale?

BeNiceToYourSister · 07/03/2020 21:28

Just been reminded of the phenomenon that was Millie’s cookies and their giant personalised monstrosities! I miss the 90s [sigh]

As a name though... meh.

Lougle · 07/03/2020 21:31

DD1 is one of 113 Millicents born in her year. She's not one bit weak. Smile

Lougle · 07/03/2020 21:33

And despite having SN and going to special school, she had learned that her short name was spelled with an 'ie' because 'there is no 'y' in Millicent' by the time she started school and told anyone who dared to spell it with a y.

Summercamping · 07/03/2020 21:41

I think it's a lovely name

crosstalk · 07/03/2020 22:03

recklessruby · 07/03/2020 22:09

recklessruby · 07/03/2020 22:12

Oh and when i was younger I was obsessed with the name Emma. I really wanted to be called it.
Named my dd that but she s known as Em.

I'm in NI and a Millie is basically a female chav (sorry for using the horrible c word) so that's all I can think about when I see it!

Me too Grin it just makes me think of the terrifying girls who lived in my estate with their permed hair and massive gold hoop earrings. Though I remember my teacher shouting at us for using the term “millie” - in her day it simply meant a working class girl who worked in a mill.

Kastanien · 07/03/2020 22:46

What is wrong with the Y spelling? I prefer it, personally.

housemdwaswrong · 07/03/2020 22:52

One of my year 7 classes has 4 children called Millie. 4!

KeepYourWigOn · 07/03/2020 22:54

I have a Millie - she's a terrier cross. We didn't give her the name though as she already had it when we got her. Can't say I'm keen on it but it felt cruel to change it. We tend to call her Moo.

user1494182820 · 07/03/2020 22:58

Meh, very bland and overused name. Not one of the nicer old fashioned ones at all!

1stMrsF · 07/03/2020 23:22

My elder daughter is called Millie (Amelia on her birth certificate). Yes it's the most common girls name for her birth year, which was not what I wanted for my children's names, but I just loved it. I think it's a great name, but I'm also glad she has Amelia to use when she's older if she wants something more formal.

Electrical · 07/03/2020 23:33

Milly is a name for female chav where I live. Also known as millbags 😄 apart from that, it’s a nickname, it’s in the ‘eeeee’ generic dross of girls born in the past decade who have twee, insipid, cutesy names that suit infants only. Poppy Rae ruby Evie Effie lily rilee Lacey daisy ee ee whatever.

giggly · 07/03/2020 23:34

I have a feisty Millie only one in a school of 200, not in the least bit meh or wet. Maybe more common in common areas thenWink

Jumpingforgin · 07/03/2020 23:59

Chicken shop

TheClaws · 08/03/2020 00:15

I’m sorry, but whenever I hear the name ‘Millie’, I think of ‘Millicent’ - that was my grandmother’s name and nickname, and unfortunately she was a terrifying woman.

PumpkinP · 08/03/2020 00:19

I don’t like it at all sorry. But then I don’t tend to like common names.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 08/03/2020 00:26

My DD went to school with a Millie, who was an absolute nightmare of a bully. The teachers clearly picked up on that, as they cast her as the cow in the school play.

So I do associate Millie with a cow, but wouldn't have done before meeting one particular girl years ago!

Samtsirch · 08/03/2020 00:41

It reminded me of the “ Milly Molly Mandy” books;Millicent Margaret Amanda.Lovely name as it brings back happy memories of storytelling with my own children 😊
