Love the name Beatrix but not keen on shortened versions (like Bea but have a one syllable surname) . Do you think we could shorten to Betsy?

Any other name ideas similar to Beatrix. Thank you!

I think it’s lovely. Could you shorten it to Trixie?

Purpletigers · 07/03/2020 17:39

Beatrix is lovely . Betsy is too cutesy ! I’d call her Beatrix if you love it and let people know she’s a Beatrix and not a Bea . You can choose their nickname though , that usually finds them .

Purpletigers · 07/03/2020 17:39

Can’t choose

BabbleBee · 07/03/2020 17:40

I don’t think you can shorten Beatrix to Betsy. Elizabeth to Betsy, yes.

I have a DD with a name commonly shortened, but she’s only known by the long version - it’s all we and she have ever used.

Bbang · 07/03/2020 17:41

I’m not keen sorry! Betsy is lovely though.

crosspelican · 07/03/2020 17:41

Not Betsy, surely. Why shorten it at all? I know a couple of Beatrices and they don't shorten, nor do their parents.

hopeishere · 07/03/2020 17:43

If you like the name why shorten it?

lynzpynz · 07/03/2020 17:44

Bonnie? Maisie? Martha? Minnie? Mabel? Abigail? (these are on my list currently!)

BadCatDirtyCat · 07/03/2020 17:45

I love it and think you could Betsy if you want.

BUNNIESandBISCUITS · 07/03/2020 17:46

Beatrix is fab.

Welshmaenad · 07/03/2020 17:47

If Ds had been a girl, I wanted to call him Jemima, after the Beatrix Potter story!

Clangus00 · 07/03/2020 17:48

Why shorten it? Want to call her Betsy? Name her Betsy.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/03/2020 17:49

Beattie? Same vibe, more manageable from Beatrix.

BUNNIESandBISCUITS · 07/03/2020 17:49

Other suggestions, since you asked...

Cordelia
Astrid
Dinah
Dorothea

QueenofmyPrinces · 07/03/2020 17:50

If you like Beatrix, call her Beatrix.

If you like Betsy, then call her Betsy.

I really don’t understand this obsession with shortening names and finding shortened names that you like.

You can’t enforce a shortened name / nickname on a child?!

Just name your child, and call your child, the name that you like.

DonttouchthatLarry · 07/03/2020 17:50

The main character in the 'Divergent' series of books/films is called Tris, short for Beatrice - that sounds much nicer than Trix/Trixie to me (and I used to ride a horse called Trixie so that kind of puts me off it!).

1Morewineplease · 07/03/2020 17:55

Betsy/Bess/Bessie is the shortened familiar of Elizabeth. Beatrix/Beatrice was traditionally shortened to Beatty.
Beatrix is a lovely name that some might shorten to Trixie.

I love Beatrix but suddenly it’s everywhere! Bea (pronounced Bee) is a great nickname

Littlemissdaredevil · 07/03/2020 18:02

I love Beatrix and wanted to name DD that but I he vetoed it. I would have shortened it to Trixie if need be

Enchiladas · 07/03/2020 18:03

I love Bea, Beatrix and Betsy!

I adore Bonnie too,

Love the old fashioned names

Catapillarsruletheworld · 07/03/2020 18:05

I know an older lady named Beatrix who shortens it to Betty.

A bit old fashioned, but quite sweet and old fashioned names seem to be popular now.

WillTheyEverSleep · 07/03/2020 18:06

Love Beatrix. Betsy is another name entirely. I know of a Beatrice and her nn is Buzz (bumble bee...Bea). It's something that's just stuck over the years.

jimmyhill · 07/03/2020 18:13

I don’t think you can shorten Beatrix to Betsy.

Hmm If Margaret can be Peggy and John can be Jack then I think Beatrix can be Betsy

Roselilly36 · 07/03/2020 18:16

I like it OP.
