Love the name Beatrix but not keen on shortened versions (like Bea but have a one syllable surname) . Do you think we could shorten to Betsy?

Any other name ideas similar to Beatrix. Thank you!

The former queen of the Netherlands is called Beatrix.

I have a Beatrix - we call her Bea as official nickname, at home we call her beezus, beebee, beediddly, she calls herself beax!

I love the name but oddly I'm not as keen on Beatrice (in my head they have a very different feel) and do get frustrated how many people call her Beatrice like it's the same name.

CruCru · 07/03/2020 19:39

I would shorten it to Beattie.

pianomum2 · 07/03/2020 19:39

I love the name Beatrix (way more than Beatrice) and adore Trixie for short.

TrixyTed · 07/03/2020 20:04

I love it but I'm biased because I have a Beatrix. She's usually called Bea but it's nice to have all the other shortened versions available. If DS had been a girl I liked Felicity, Delilah and Cordelia. DH likes none of them... good job he was a boy!

Montsti · 07/03/2020 20:18

I have a Beatrice and we call her Bea (Bee) or Bebe (Beebee)...We chose Beatrice over Beatrix as I don’t like the nn. Trixie and thought it was more likely to be used...

Thank you for all of the replies. Think it may be Beatrix or back to the drawing board on names! X

I love Beatrix (or Beatrice).. Though it's probably partly because I have a Spanish friend called Beatriz. She shortens it to Bea (pronounced Bay-a)

DontCallMeShitley · 07/03/2020 20:50

I really dislike Beatrix thanks to Call the Midwife, it makes me think of an over the top and very peculiar regional accent, which didn't bother me at all until the last series or 3.

Beatrice, however, I like. Especially pronounced with a French accent, it is charming.

It’s really beautiful in French, I agree!

@DuLANGMondeFOREVER

Beatrix has 3 syllables not two! Confused

We say Be-a-trix to ours.

SarahAndQuack · 07/03/2020 21:07

Lots of people say it 'bee-tricks' though.

Beatrice in Italian is four (my colleague is an Italian Beatrice).

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 07/03/2020 21:09

I had an aunt Beatrix who was universally known as Beat.

Puffalicious · 07/03/2020 21:15

Bibi is fabulous as a shortened. Agree with the 3 syllables, same with Beatrice- bee-a- triss.

If 3 DS were girls at the times I would have had Maisie, Mirren and Rowan. Still love the latter two but Maisie is now everywhere (16y years ago it wasn't).
DS3 has twin girls in his class- Carson and Codelia- I kind of like their names.

Puffalicious · 07/03/2020 21:17

I was just going to say the 4 syllable for the Italian pronunciation- lovely.

Topseyt · 07/03/2020 21:21

I love Beatrix, though personally slightly prefer the Beatrice spelling.

I'm not wild about Betsy and relate it more to the name Elizabeth than Beatrix. That's just my personal opinion though.

Specialkp · 07/03/2020 21:24

Beatrix was my top name but we didn’t/couldn’t agree on it! Love Bea too as a shortened version.
Other names I loved but didn’t use: Elsie, Hattie, Edith or Edie, Alice

LettyBriggs · 07/03/2020 21:26

I love Beatrix. And indeed Beatrice.
I know a Beatrix who’s known as Trixie
Another one is Bibi.
My friends Beatrix has siblings Violet and Sadie.

makingmammaries · 08/03/2020 07:00

Makes me think of dominatrix, sorry OP. Couldn’t you go with Beatrice?

Takethatandparty30 · 08/03/2020 10:25

Beatrix is a beautiful name. If it's your choice of name, my opinion is you can shorten it to anything you like!
