Love the name Beatrix but not keen on shortened versions (like Bea but have a one syllable surname) . Do you think we could shorten to Betsy?

Any other name ideas similar to Beatrix. Thank you!

Betsy is one of those twee cutesy names that I just can’t imagine on a fully grown adult.

PenisBeakerDipper · 07/03/2020 18:19

I think it’s lovely and you can use whichever nickname you like.

avocadont · 07/03/2020 18:25

LOVE the name Beatrix, I agree with Trixie being a cute nickname

Snoodleberry · 07/03/2020 18:30

We loved the name Beatrix, but loathed the nickname Bea - if we had gone with Beatrix we were considering Bertie or Betty as nicknames given the three syllables of the full names!

BBBear · 07/03/2020 18:32

You could shorten to Bebe for more than one syllable

Crunchymum · 07/03/2020 18:33

Beatrix I know is BiBi (bee-bee)

DrManhattan · 07/03/2020 18:34

Trixie Matel is one of my favourite queens

Summercat · 07/03/2020 18:35

Hmmm it's OK. Smile Wouldn't be my first choice of name for a girl, but it's got a little bit of mileage in it. Trix, Bea, Trixie.

I like the name Eleanor, as you can get Elle, Ellie, Nell, Nellie, Ella... And also Camilla... Coz you can shorten it to Millie which I love. Also Elizabeth, as you can get Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Bet, Betty. A different permutation for every occasion. Grin

hidinginthenightgarden · 07/03/2020 18:35

Betty is a better ickname for Beatrix than Betsy.

Bettyhatesavocados · 07/03/2020 18:36

Beatrix but I don't think it's shortened to Betsy, is it? Trixie would be a nicer shortening (well, it's not a shortening...but a variation?)

Welshmaenad · 07/03/2020 18:38

@DontBe no? I mean, in Wales it's grown up enough to name a whole health board after...

I’m biased because I have a Beatrix.
When she was tiny she was called Betty and Trixie. Now, as a teenager, her friends call her Bea.

People often comment on what a lovely name it is (and what a lovely girl she is too of course!)

Rezie · 07/03/2020 18:41

I don’t think you can shorten Beatrix to Betsy.
I think you can call the kid anything even if it isn't the most obvious option.

Bettyhatesavocados · 07/03/2020 18:42

Btw, I love Genevieve (shorten to Gen, Evie) and Camille pronounced the French way (Cammy).
I'm sure others will go, 'Eh, what?' But I've always loved the names Percy or Purdey for a girl (like the Joanna Lumley character in the New Avengers).
Also, always loved Eppie (shortening of Eponine as in Les Mis or Silas Marner)

Bettyhatesavocados · 07/03/2020 18:43

^not sure any of these are like Beatrix, though...

Largeyellowdaffodil · 07/03/2020 18:44

Betsy is short for Elizabeth

tomatoesandstew · 07/03/2020 18:47

I think Bea pronounced the spanish way (Beay - A) would be fine with a one syllable surname - i'm probably biased as it's actually on my list of potential names.

Betsy is actually a name that some people call me and as an adult i'm not particularly keen on it apart from when friends from my childhood call me it but for a child's nickname i think it's sweet.

HaveAtEm · 07/03/2020 18:48

I love Beatrix and Beatrice equally. Bibi is a fabulous shortened name if you really need one...or Betty which is also lovely. I don't think you need to though, honestly...why wouldn't you use the given name when it is so great?

SarahAndQuack · 07/03/2020 18:48

Well, of course you 'can' call her Betsy if she's Beatrice.

The issue is that everyone else will assume she's Elizabeth.

My brother went to school with a child called Edward whose parents called him Bertie. The poor kid was constantly having to correct people. I remember his mum saying brightly 'no one thinks it's odd'.

Oh yes they did, love.

Totally get why a slightly unusual nickname might evolve naturally, but IMO if you really want a name to be used, you need to use that name.

SarahAndQuack · 07/03/2020 18:49

Sorry, Beatrix (am dyslexic and in my head they sound the same).

nosleepp · 07/03/2020 18:51

I love it and Trixie is very cute

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/03/2020 18:52

My great aunt Beatrix was Beatie (or Beat)

Butteredtoast55 · 07/03/2020 18:53

I like them both, and I like Betty and Bea or BiBi too. I think both Betty and Betsy are acceptable as a shortened version of Beatrix. I also agree and think it’s nicer to have a ‘grown up’ name that can be shortened rather than just give a nickname as the actual name.
To those saying Betsy is more of a child’s name, I know two adult Betties and a Betsy who is Welsh. They are all lovely.

BalanchineBallet · 07/03/2020 18:55

The Beatrice I knew at school was called Buzzy.

I like it, but I’d just call her Beatrice.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 07/03/2020 19:09

They are both two syllable names so it’s not ‘shortening’ anything.

I like both though.
