to think this food isn't unhealthy?!

I'm doing intermittent fasting and trying to watch what I eat, and I don't know whether it's because when you're on a diet you notice these things more, but I've been seeing people in groups I'm in refer to meals like a jacket potato with beans and a salad, or shepherd's pie, or a stew as 'indulgent comfort food' lately.

AIBU to think there's nothing particularly indulgent or unhealthy about a jacket potato?

1AnnBryce1 · 06/03/2020 14:21

You don't count carbs with this woe. I rest my case.

1AnnBryce1 · 06/03/2020 14:21

I mean calories!

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/03/2020 14:21

Most people use IF in conjunction with a keto / low GI diet to control diabetes / pre-diabetes / insulin resistance. These people should never be eating meals built around carbs / starches / sugars / processed crap but many of them incorrectly think eating a 500g potato plus processed beans is healthy when it isn’t. A small baked potato by itself or with a can of tuna mixed with veg and yoghurt or home made chilli is a better mix of carbs / fats / protein.

DropYourSword · 06/03/2020 14:21

Weren’t you flouncing off already? Can’t you just...go.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 06/03/2020 14:21

Yeah I'll stick to flour, yeast, water and salt.

Babytigerrr · 06/03/2020 14:22

i know you dont @1AnnBryce1 but, IF isnt just about low carbing, so i will stick to actual bread and continue to lose weight, rather than eating whatever the hell that is!

1AnnBryce1 · 06/03/2020 14:23

@DROPYOURSWORD

And you are???

HowlsMovingBungalow · 06/03/2020 14:24

You should take your own advice and STFC. Spammer.

DropYourSword · 06/03/2020 14:24

Laughing at your tantrum, mainly.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 06/03/2020 14:25

Why is it that people who low carb become evangelical about it?

Why can't they just make the choice for themselves and be comfortable with that?

You count carbs with keto we get it. But I would rather count calories than carbs, and then I also get to enjoy delicious carbs and lose weight. Which I see as a win win really.

Babytigerrr · 06/03/2020 14:25

does keto make you more aggressive then as well?

Babytigerrr · 06/03/2020 14:26

me too dish

i am going to have a burger, with a real bun for tea tonight. Maybe even chips. I will likely have a small amount of chocolate after that and i will still lose weight.

I feel like i am living the bloody dream. Grin

DropYourSword · 06/03/2020 14:27

Evidently @babytiger!

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 06/03/2020 14:34

I’ve lost 2 stone in the past eating potato’s and beans doing slimming world! You can also have pretty much any meal so stews etc, so long as they’re cooked the slimming world ‘way’. They are considered “free” food, as are pasta, rice etc.

I did put the weight back on but that’s because of the cake & chocolate habit! Potatoes are good, filling, cheap food (even better if you can substitute for sweet potato - more nutritious)

You could lose weight eating just chocolate so long as you stuck to a certain amount of calories. Doesn’t mean you’d be healthy or have any energy though! I’d personally rather have a potato than something disgusting like a smoothie or avocado which has about the same calories...

zonkin · 06/03/2020 14:40

Keto has been around for a long time. It's not a new fad at all.

I lost a lot of weight about 10 years ago by doing Keto. Size 24 down to size 10.

Once at my goal weight I slowly introduced carbs back into my diet. It took a bit of time to work out the correct balance for me. I don't go OTT but do have carbs. I have had two very healthy pregnancies whilst living this way.

I used to love bread but really don't like it any more. It makes me feel bloated. I love food and eating (hence why I got so fat in the first place). I eat out a lot and don't find my diet restrictive at all. Just ask for something non carby as a side instead of the inevitable chips/potato of some kind.

If my weight swings up by more than 2kg I IF for a week or two and that does the trick.

I feel great. I run 10km 3 x per week and do weights. I have tons of energy and I would never return back to eating the stodge that I used to eat.

I do love a baked potato with tons of butter and coleslaw but I don't eat it that often.

irregularegular · 06/03/2020 14:42

To me, Jacket potato and beans, stew, shepherd's pie are comforting. They are warm, slightly stodgy, not strong flavoured, old-fashioned, nostalgic. Kind of indulgent, in the comforting sense.

But that doesn't mean they are unhealthy.

In fact equating comfort and unhealthy seems to be problem!

MyCatHatesEverybody · 06/03/2020 14:42

95% of dieters regain the weight so why single out keto as ineffective compared with any other weight loss method? The best diet is the one that works for you.

GrumpyHoonMain · 06/03/2020 14:49

With all due respect this thread is about IF not slimming world. SW works by not educating it’s customers about calories and encouraging them to stuff themselves with pasta and potatoes and other high cal foods. All good while you are paying but when you stop you will fall off the wagon afterwards if you don’t learn about macros.

For example, in IF, many people find they have more energy in the day by not starting to eat until lunchtime.

A big avocado might be approx 400 cals. On paper is comparable to a jacket potato, but if you eat an avocado for lunch you won’t feel the same fatigue / hunger a few hours later that a potato or pasta laden lunch would give you. In fact an avocado for lunch might even allow you to feel comfortably full until dinner.
