to think this food isn't unhealthy?!

I'm doing intermittent fasting and trying to watch what I eat, and I don't know whether it's because when you're on a diet you notice these things more, but I've been seeing people in groups I'm in refer to meals like a jacket potato with beans and a salad, or shepherd's pie, or a stew as 'indulgent comfort food' lately.

AIBU to think there's nothing particularly indulgent or unhealthy about a jacket potato?

Clearly we were talking about keto to lose weight not keto purely for medical reasons.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 06/03/2020 19:03

I don't even know what half those ingredients are!

I have to admit I was very excited and looked it up - but as you say, the ingredients are pretty obscure and I don't know where I'd get half of them (and dread to think what they'd cost).

Never mind . . . thanks anyway, Ann

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 06/03/2020 20:57

Themagicians that's literally the point I was making "I am criticising posters who criticise others eating" were my exact words. That posters have come on a preached about keto being the best and how no one understands keto. If only we were keto...

I respect that people eat differently, you are putting words in my mouth, I have not said anywhere that I don't respect this. The whole point was for the average person carbs are not unhealthy and really the fact that some people are diabetic/coeliac/other allergies is quite irrelevant to that fact. Unless you have a medical reason to cut out carbs it is a fad diet. Some people are allergic to penicillin, doesnt mean that not taking penicillin is a good idea for the general population.

I was taking the piss a bit out of a poster who came on here and acted quite aggressive. However most of what I said was the truth, I still disagreed with the sentiment behind their post

WalkingDeadTrainee · 06/03/2020 21:37

To lighten up the mood a bit. Do you remember the fad when people were drinking their own piss?😂

DropYourSword · 06/03/2020 21:43

Did anyone really do that?!

WalkingDeadTrainee · 06/03/2020 21:46

Yeah😂

OlaEliza · 06/03/2020 22:27

How do you know? Did you do it?

WalkingDeadTrainee · 06/03/2020 22:38

God no🤢
I don't think newspapers would actually cover it if people didn't actually do it.
It's called urine therapy 🤢

OlaEliza · 07/03/2020 07:08

Actually, I think Gillian McKeith does it.

tiggertogger · 07/03/2020 07:32

Do you realise- people lose weight doing intermittent fasting as they reduce the amount of calories they eat by cutting out hours in the day
People lose weight doing keto as they reduce the amount of calories they eat by cutting out food groups
People lose weight doing slim fast/shakes/ low fat/ cabbage soup/ lemon detox all for one reason- they reduce the amount of calories they eat!
These faddy diets are about one thing- calorie deficit. Calorie deficit makes you lose weight irrelevant of what you eat. So eat what you want, track it and make sure it's less than you use. All the rest is just part of the diet industry and you'll stay far forever following those. CALORIE DEFICIT PEOPLE. Eat less move more 🤷🏻‍♀️

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 08:18

See i dont get how youre in defecit doing keto when youre putting butter in your coffee and eating as much cheese as you want!

Cary2012 · 07/03/2020 08:25

The foods you mention are fine OP.
Calories in and calories out are all that matters.
As previously mentioned, cutting out food groups will cut calories. Drinking crap in the form of shakes will lose weight and line the pockets of the slimming industry, as will buying prepared calorie counted meals.

We need healthy nutritious foods, carbs, healthy fats and protein, dairy.
The carbs are better unrefined, the protein lean, the fats unsaturated.

I have lost 4 stone, and am maintaining the loss on about 1600 calories a day. I eat three meals and am never hungry. Most of my calories come from unrefined carbs, veg and pulses. I avoid sugar and limit saturated fat. I never eat processed food, so cakes, sweets, biscuits, pastry stuff all off the menu.
If I was to go back to how I ate pre diet, of course the weight would go on again.
Did Keto many years ago, (then it was called Atkins) and the weight fell off me. I however felt unwell, and ditched it. Yes Keto works and I'm not knocking it, but for me it wasn't the answer.
I lost the weight last year by eating 1200 calories a day, and limiting portion size but filling up on veg and salad. I cut out sugar apart from 2 pieces of fruit.
Our bodies count calories, so you could get six hundred calories from chocolate and pringles for dinner if you so desire, and as long as the calories are counted in your allowance the weight would come off. This choice wouldn't fill you up, so a healthier meal of jacket spud, low sugar baked beans and a bit of grated mature cheese on top for less calories would be far more nutritious and healthy.
It's all about calories, and choosing them well.

mistermagpie · 07/03/2020 08:40

I'm doing IF and it is perfectly possible to do IF successfully and not be doing low carb. I've lost a stone since January and have eaten pretty normally (shepherds pie for dinner last night actually). IF and low carb are two separate things, you can do them together but you don't have to.

MrsJamin · 07/03/2020 08:49

@tiggertogger exactly! Most diets create a calorie deficit but there's no magic to be earned by fasting or just cutting out a major food group, it's just creating a CD. Also many diets are successful financially because they obscure the education of calories with stupid words like 'syns'. Nothing wrong with jacket potato and beans, as long as you don't forget the cheese! If you move enough, you can get away with eating anything as long as you're not eating more than you burn!

RibenaMonsoon · 07/03/2020 08:51

I've lost alot of weight on keto when I had DS. Now that I've got DD as well I find it easier to manage eating what I want and this new fangled thing called exercise.

I lose weight and tone as well. I'm finding it easier to keep up with my very energetic DS as I'm fitter as well. Don't have time to go to the gym so I do exercise videos at home. DD just sits there and laughs at me while I do it Grin

Personally I don't feel that eating potato and beans is unhealthy as long as your diet is balanced. I do find these days that people are so concerned about eating next to nothing to lose weight instead of just cutting out sugar and crap and moving around more. That will also have the desired effect.

SunshineAvenue · 07/03/2020 08:56

Gagging for a heavily buttered jacket potato now.

feelingverylazytoday · 07/03/2020 09:38

Babytigerrr if you overdo the fats then you won't lose weight on keto, in fact some people actually gain weight. It's just that most people only tolerate a certain amount of fat.
Most people don't feel hunger/fatigue a few hours after eating a dinner containing pasta or potatoes. But if you do, then maybe eating an avocado as a meal is for you.

Babytigerrr · 07/03/2020 09:42

Keto is definitely not for me!

I dont feel hungry after eating carbs ever. I would however probably overdo the cheese and gain Grin

OlaEliza · 07/03/2020 10:35

It's not true that keto is just about a calorie deficit. It creates a different chemical reaction (ketosis) which switches you over into burning fat instead of glycogen.

People need to accept that people are wired differently. If I ate a plate of pasta for dinner I'd be starving 30mins later. It's all about leptin receptors which are the brains' 'feel full' notification. Plus insulin resistance etc. Some people can eat carbs and calorie count and some people have to go keto 🤷 the sooner people recognise that and stop attacking the other for their choices, the better.

mistermagpie · 07/03/2020 11:14

It's definitely true that people are wired differently. If I eat a jacket potato for lunch I'm still full ages later. I've been eating carbs at practically every meal for my entire life and until I had my recent baby my bmi was 19, so it's not like my body has got used to it and now I overeat or anything.

I've always watched what I eat in terms of portions and exercised a lot and I've been slim pretty much for the last 20 years, barring pregnancy. It's not essential to restrict any foods at all and be slim if you are consistent and play the long game. I'm only 'dieting' now because I want to shift the baby weight before my 40th!

tiggertogger · 07/03/2020 13:05

@OlaEliza not true. If you are in ketosis and consume too many calories every day you still out on weight. That's an actual scientific fact. What happens when you follow the keto diet is that you feel full or sickly in fats and that reduces appetite/reduces calories you consume. If you track your calories on keto you'll see that it's calorie deficit causing weight loss

DropYourSword · 07/03/2020 13:13

Actually, I think Gillian McKeith does it.

She of “You are what you eat” fame?
Funny that - I always thought she was a bag of rotten piss.

OlaEliza · 07/03/2020 13:41

@tiggertogger The first time I did low carb, I did what they are now calling dirty keto.

I had sausage, egg & bacon for breakfast. Pepperoni & babybels or ham and cheese for lunch. Dinner was either cheapo satay chicken stick salad or chicken wings and a pizza where I only ate the top, kebab & salad without the pitta, chop suey, crab claws, crispy duck without pancakes & chilli oil etc etc etc and I lost 3.5st.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 07/03/2020 15:24

People do wierdest things when wanting to lose weight without actually working for it. Did you know that if you have weak will and eat fat while taking Alli tablets, you will end up shitting your pants🙈

Cary2012 · 07/03/2020 19:48

Yes Olga I agree that ketosis burns fat differently. My body burned fat very efficiently, but wasn't healthly in ketosis.
I ate loads of food on Atkins, and the first week lost 8lbs in five days. I thought I'd cracked it. Good luck to those that can maintain on it and feel well. I got a kidney stone, and was asked in hospital if I'd ever "done Atkins?", not saying it was the cause, but a doctor asked me. I also got terrible muscle cramps.
Maintenance is the key, losing weight (for me) is easy, but maintaining is the crux.
I felt ill after 6 weeks in keto: lethargic, weak and very constipated, despite drinking loads of water and taking supplements.

There is no magic bullet to weight lose and keeping it off. It takes discipline to stick to the calories you need to lose, and then finding out what you can eat to maintain.
You don't need 'syns' or keto or low fat, you just need a variety of food that you enjoy, that are healthy within your calorie limits. For me that is lowish fat, unrefined carbs, lean protein and lots of fruit and veg. Crucially, I enjoy the food I eat, and feel healthy and well on it.
Had jacket spud and beans for lunch, yummy. Thanks OP!
