To not do party bags?

And just hand out cake wrapped in napkins? Party Saturday and totally forgot about sodding party bags. They are a waste of time and money anyway. Would you panic buy something or not?

You could give out something useful instead of tat. Packet of seeds, set of colouring pencils, skipping rope (just one good quality thing, not loads of cheap bits).

At one party my DD decorated a fabric bag with special pens then took that home with cake wrapped up in it. At another she was given a nice notebook.

You don't have to, though. Just get some haribo packs and give each child one and some cake. Kids are always happy with sweets!

nevernotstruggling · 07/03/2020 09:09

Anything. But those sweetie cones. Even my kids who have hardly any sweets don't want them

Emmelina · 07/03/2020 09:18

If you don’t, there’s a high chance one of the mums will come on here, “NC for this” and ask “AIBU to expect party bags? They’re 7!” Wink

I was a kid in the eighties and we got party bags.

Nothing extravagant- those thin plastic ones fro the supermarkets. They always had balloons on them! Inside a slice of cake, a balloon and a bouncy ball. Sometimes a pencil or a whistle.

Cazza6474 · 07/03/2020 10:32

Maybe a Easter egg they have always gone down well and lots of deals on atm

GreenTulips · 07/03/2020 10:35

Donate the money you would of spent on a party to water aid and give your kid the paper instead if that’s such a great idea on what to give a child

Wow!! Some kids somewhere clean water is all they want. You know so they don’t die.

Really privileged answer right there

Too late now but Ebay is your friend. Bulk buy party boxes, balloons, curling ribbon & multi packs of tat. Stash in cupboard. Bring out every year/party time, fill up with sweets and tat. Print stickers saying 'Thank you for coming to Tarquin's party' and stick on box.

As mine got older, had craft activities at the party (make-your-own snow globes, unicorn masks, key rings etc) they went in the party box too - kids go home with a packed party box, everyone happy.

PS. kids eat the birthday cake at the party as afters. Prising cake out of a damp serviette gives me the quivers!

@SerenDippitty I'm in my 40's and remember going with my mum to choose the stuff for the party bags.

Agree, don't send cake home. It just stays in the bag and not eaten. My husband throws straight in the bin.

I would always do a party bag. I have 4 children 11 and under and don't think I have ever been to a party where they weren't given something. Personally I shudder when given massive cones of sweets as they will keep on at me to have a sweet until they are all gone and I don't like them having that much sugar.

You don't have to spend loads of money or fill with tat though (although my children love stretchy men) I have found party bags more expensive as they get older - for my daughters 11th they all got goodie bags that were basically full sized presents. Normal in my area though and I like seeing the children leaving so happy. They are very good for signifying the end of the party too.

Too late for this year but next year hit up the chains in the Jan sales. For a Jan party, I gave a bling pen each with an animal topper (£5 down to £1 in the John Lewis sale) plus a small bag of Haribo. The DC enjoyed swapping the animals. Best ones we've been given were a velcro tennis set after a sport party (have used it at the beach loads) and an 'All About Today' magnetic board with time, date, weather etc.

I bet a lot of DC would like one of those mini whiteboards with pen from Poundland.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/03/2020 13:55

A £1 book and small bag of haribos

£1 sticker book

£1 Easter egg

£1 large tube of smarties /jelly sweets etc

Oriunda · 07/03/2020 14:17

I love prepping party bags - find it very therapeutic. One year I managed to fill 30 bags using new party bag crap from the previous year’s worth of parties he’d attended! Now he’s 8 we’re inviting less people so it gets easier. Football party I put in match attax and sweets. This year the venue give a mug and I’m just putting in paper bags of sweets.

I used to make cupcakes and put them in individual bags to help fill the party bag but now we just cut and serve cake at the party.

Dieu · 07/03/2020 14:40

Mason jars (the glass drinking ones with straws) for £1, filled with sweets. I would never not do party bags. It's a bit joyless.

Olawisk · 07/03/2020 16:09

Wow!! Some kids somewhere clean water is all they want. You know so they don’t die

Exactly so don’t give your child a party and donate the money since you think it’s a great thing to do.🤷🏼‍♀️

londonrach · 07/03/2020 17:12

My dd aged 3 loves party bags. If your dc that age or around that age please do a party bag. Yabu

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 07/03/2020 17:15

Such healthy things parties, lets all give outr kids tooth rot

katy1213 · 07/03/2020 17:20

Don't bother. Who cares what a bunch of grabby kids think!

EmeraldShamrock · 07/03/2020 17:20

I love doing party bags. I always add a colouring book, pencils with a stretchy man a €1 each when you buy in bulk.

piefacedClique · 07/03/2020 17:27

Best party bags I did were for a football party for my son.... sports direct do big boxes of footballs so each child got a football and a whistle! The kids loved them... the parents weren’t so keen on the whistles tho 🤣🤣🤣. They were all used and there was so plastic

piefacedClique · 07/03/2020 17:27

No plastic! 🤦🏼

AdriannaP · 07/03/2020 17:34

As a paretn I hate all that plastic tat. A piece of cake is fine!

NewNameChange2020 · 07/03/2020 17:38

My son got a cupcake and a mask at the end of a recent party - brilliant! No plastic tat, and he could choose which mask he got, so I'll be following their example if I do a party this year.

Bluewavescrashing · 07/03/2020 17:57

No no no to stretchy men. They gather fluff, break and then are binned. So wasteful.

drspouse · 07/03/2020 18:11

We always give books and cake. Nobody has ever complained.

GreenTulips · 07/03/2020 18:39

No no no to stretchy men. They gather fluff, break and then are binned

And leave greecy marks on the ceiling

ISawNessie · 07/03/2020 18:45

Bit late but asda do good little party fillers. Or you can get those large bubble wands cheap in some places too.
