To not do party bags?

And just hand out cake wrapped in napkins? Party Saturday and totally forgot about sodding party bags. They are a waste of time and money anyway. Would you panic buy something or not?

I hate them, but kids love them. If your kids are young you probably need to do them - sorry. ASDA have loads of bits for party bags. However I agree the plastic tat is terribly wasteful. Maybe keep that to a minimum and add sweets?

Kittywampus · 05/03/2020 20:54

My kids went to a party once where there was no cake (parents were v anti sugar). That didn't go down well!

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 05/03/2020 20:55

I wouldn’t even hand out cake. I serve it during the party. Nothing worse as a parent than cake and crumbs in the car and across the kitchen. I’d go with a big bowl of the little bags of Haribo and let them choose one on the way out, that way you can offer siblings something too.

Foghead · 05/03/2020 20:55

If you’ve got a hobby craft near you, these went down well at a recent party

God you miser! I used to love doing party bags and put a lot of effort into them.

At least do a cone of sweets, Easter egg, book , something!

Divebar · 05/03/2020 20:58

Party bags don’t have to be full of plastic or sugar.... I’ve had a book given, little paper bags with science experiments & science related items, a little toy cat with cat related gifts ( adoption certificate etc) printables with pens, tote bag with fabric pens, cool sunglasses, headbands, slime, handmade soap ( much disappointment with that one Grin ) CD with party themed music. It can be done and surely this is what Amazon is for.

Last time I just did a haribo tub each. One of my sons was born just after Christmas and I always buy selection boxes in the sale rather than a party bag.
Can you just pick up a bag of haribo each or something along those lines.

LazyFace · 05/03/2020 20:59

Some sweets, cheap books, anything but plastic crap is welcome here.

Canyousewcushions · 05/03/2020 21:00

I'd panic buy them. Sometimes we've been to younger kids (friends of family) parties and mine have been looking for party bags in the way out. Thankfully they didn't ask the hosts but we're quite out about it afterwards. I now warn them before we go to that family's parties that bags are unlikely to make sure they know NOT to start asking for them!!

Their kids start school soon so I guess it might change once they go to more partied themselves.... but it did make me realise how expectant school aged kids are on that front so I'd always do them.

Olawisk · 05/03/2020 21:01

I’d buy party bags. They are expected

LaurieMarlow · 05/03/2020 21:01

Go for it. But be prepared for someone to ask you where they are. Grin

I actually enjoy doing them though!

Stormyjupiter · 05/03/2020 21:03

Party bags are waste of time. Best thing my dc enjoyed and impressed me was some sort of crafty things, as foghead suggested. It was simple not too expensive craft to do. Way better than getting crappy cheap toys that get lost straight away and sweets in the bag.

SoftSheen · 05/03/2020 21:03

Party bags are essential, sorry!

Vintage2020 · 05/03/2020 21:03

You don’t have to do party bags, don’t put pressure on yourself (personally I don’t appreciate a bag full of sugar and plastic coming into my home, and that’s every week when they are in infants school!

JoshArcherStoleMyTractor · 05/03/2020 21:03

We bought a job lot of books from the book people for DS's birthday, the children got a piece of cake, a book and the littler ones got wooden maracas from Amazon prime. No hassle at all, and they were all happy.

Dutchesss · 05/03/2020 21:04

A pack of seeds in a compostable pot, cheap and environmentally friendly.

Cismyfatarse1 · 05/03/2020 21:04

Lucky dip. One gift per child.

forkfun · 05/03/2020 21:07

I don't do party bags. No kid has ever complained. Some have asked and I just said "sorry, there aren't any". Everyone survived.

Wordofwarning · 05/03/2020 21:12

Seeds - great

Or at Xmas one of the kids in the class adopted an animal for the class rather than Xmas cards. Could you do something similar and print out a pic for all guests?

WomanIsTaken · 05/03/2020 21:13

Yay, do everyone a favour and ditch the bags. So much crap! O, to free each other of the pressure to buy tat from halfway around the world, bag it up and Trojan horse it into some other unsuspecting parent's lives.

We usually make something at DCs parties and their guests take the made thing home at the end; a lip balm, a candle, a badge etc. I have done paper cones of sweets too.

Stormyjupiter · 05/03/2020 21:14

Dutchess, what a great idea! I would really love it if my dc got that instead of regular party bags.

Itwasntme1 · 05/03/2020 21:18

Kids under ten love a good party bag.

I am famous for mine😊.

Not too much plastic tat, a moderate amount of nice sweets and something a little special.

oatybiscuit · 05/03/2020 21:18

Party bags are the polite way of saying "leave now; I have had enough of your darling children".

Easily sorted at about £1 per head if you're on a budget, and not difficult to avoid plastic toys if that's your preference. Books are a good option.

That said, you might get away without depending on the type of party. Recently my DD has been to the following:

  • craft party - they take home what they made
  • build a bear party - they take home the bear
  • trampoline party - they went to Mac Donald's on the way home and I think most of the children considered the Happy Meal toy to be their party bag.

Essential you just want something to give out to signal that it is all over. Cake in napkins is ok if that's all you've got.

You might love it. Your children would be GUTTED.

Mumofboys1 · 05/03/2020 21:23
