Wine every Evening?

Busymum45 · 04/03/2020 21:21

I love a glass of wine most nights, normally one or two but more at weekends, is this ok or a bad sign ?! Try to have one or 2 wine free nights. I associate it with wind down and relaxation as have a busy life.

Is it unreasonable to want to drink wine every eve?

I have voted YANBU.

I do like wine and for me I will have a minimum 2 glasses if I open a bottle.

I have a close relative who drinks 1 bottle a night and finishes with 2 glasses of vodka and tonic (and they're not pub measures). She started with just a glass a night.

I am acutely aware that the desire/need for 2 glasses to "unwind" then becomes a minimum of 3 glasses, then a bottle. Not necessarily in an obvious way, it won't be fast it will be slow and steady.

So, because of my relative I am very strict on what and when I drink. I don't want to be like them. It scares me. I could easily drink every night. I have to make an effort some weeknights not to drink.

I limit myself to Friday or Saturdays. Only of course I am now drinking on both nights...

So YANBU to enjoy a drink to unwind but please be truthful with yourself and if ever you find yourself making excuses or telling little untruths about how much you actually drink... Take a step back and reassess your habit.

Not preaching, not saying alcohol is evil. Just be mindful of your intake.

@Chinnychinnychinnychib love it😂

thistimelastweek · 04/03/2020 22:04

@Strawberrypancakes . Yes but how many hangovers? How many rough days? How much worry about your long-term health?
Not judging. Quite the opposite

Mayhapitis · 04/03/2020 22:05

I can't. I can't have 1 glass, it'll end up being the whole bottle (and at times a second bottle). So I no longer drink wine at home.

Strangely I'm ok at moderating when I'm out in public, but at home I have to empty the bottle.

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/03/2020 22:06

I’m having one now and might have another...no judgement here.

laughinglettuce · 04/03/2020 22:08

Yes, that's too much if you value your health.

ColourMeExhausted · 04/03/2020 22:09

Woah @Chinnychinnychinnychib you win at Wednesday night! Brilliant!

Well I am one of those people who 'wind down with a chocolate bar' every night so I'd say we all have our vices, you just do what works for you, as long as it's not affecting your health or your performance the next day, it's probably ok? That said, I always find the novelty and enjoyment disappeared for me if I drink every night during times like Christmas. So alcohol free nights are probably a good idea.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 04/03/2020 22:09

I couldn't think of anything worse, but I hate wine. It's probably over the recommended limit but when I drink (once every 2 or 3 months) I binge drink so its probably no better. If you feel like you can't do without it, that's when there is a problem.

swishthecat · 04/03/2020 22:10

I think this is very good advice, Thunder. It is very easy for the amount to creep up too.

malloo · 04/03/2020 22:13

I'm with you OP, I drink about the same as you. I'm happy and healthy! Don't agree with it being a slippery slope to drinking more, my drinking hasn't increased at all over time, and I'm not bothered if I don't drink. Its just pleasant, and it tastes nice!

Wineiscooling · 04/03/2020 22:14

I'm the same as you and sometimes have guilt about it but I am never ill, run marathons and generally keep fit. Drinking wine doesn't interfere with my life in any way and does help me wind down after a busy stressful day.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 04/03/2020 22:16

DH and I just caned the best part of 1.5 bottles and shagged in the sitting room. I feel no guilt or concerns
Love this - I remember those days. Enjoy

ThunderPython · 04/03/2020 22:17

No it may not be a slippery slope for everyone but if you are the type of person (I myself am) who has to have "just one" then it is sensible to pay attention to what you're drinking, more than someone who can take or leave it.

FWIW, my relative's slippery slope has been 20 years in the making.

AddressLabel · 04/03/2020 22:18

I have a bottle of beer most evenings when I'm cooking tea. I don't drink any more than that because of the toddler.

Janicejaniceahmfallin · 04/03/2020 22:18

You will get replies saying you are an alcoholic though knowing this place. Probably from the people who wind down with a chocolate bar every night.

Erm, so wine AND chocolate every night would be really bad, yes ...? Blush

DirtyRotter · 04/03/2020 22:19

Depends how big the glasses are. 1.5 bottles a week is about 14 units which is what the NHS recommends.

I think a glass a night is better than binge drinking 1.5 bottles in one go on a Friday (of course I would never do such a thing 😀).

If it’s worrying you, read up on it and try and swap it for something else relaxing. I associate a glass of wine in a Friday with finishing the working week so I get where the wine = relaxation feeling from.

My dad had a double whisky every night for as long as I can remember. He lasted to the grand old age of 84.

Joking.
SAME. But you’re very brave posing that question on Mumsnet. Grin

Cynderella · 04/03/2020 22:21

I used to drink (more than a couple of glasses) at weekends only, but nowadays, it is a glass of wine most evenings. Sometimes, it's half a glass, sometimes, two, sometimes none at all. I also drink a couple of glasses of water in the evenings, but like a glass of wine before I go to bed.

If we have friends round, I can drink all evening. I don't need wine with dinner, but it's a nice way to finish the evening.

EnidBlyton · 04/03/2020 22:21

only a very mild rose, on my second glass tonight, but i am having a very tough time

Atalune · 04/03/2020 22:22

Well I live wine and happily drank the same as you 1/2 glasses every night and then more at the weekend.

I realised that I was drinking lots and lots and the amounts were creeping up- it was Christmas time. But I was tired. I looked like shit. I was irritable and I was sleeping badly.

I’ve stopped. So far this year I have had 6 drinks. All on nights a out. All not enjoyed bar one glass of really nice red with my bestie on a spa eve. That was lush and a treat and I savoured it.

I realised that my relationship with alcohol was unhealthy for my physical and mental health. I’ve felt so so good. But I have also felt quite bored and quite confused as what I can do to mark the weekends or reward myself.

For me though, all of that underscores an unhealthy relationship with booze.

Oldbutstillgotit · 04/03/2020 22:23

I have just polished off a bottle of wine . I am nearly 66 and don’t give a shit what po-faced people think ! On MN if you have a thimble of sherry at Christmas you are considered “ someone with a problem “ cheers 🍷

It's a good thing that science and medical advice looks at larger studies than just someone's Dad

billy1966 · 04/03/2020 22:25

OP, the thing is it's good to give your liver a break from processing alcohol at least 2 days a week.
Helps the liver to regenerate.
Bummer I know, but drinking every night isn't the best.

I totally get the reward thing too. But best not to every night.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/03/2020 22:26

It's not ideal, but it's not the end of the world either. Try to have a few alcohol-free nights a week and keep to around the government's guidelines.
